House, 5 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)
Our special and spacious five-bed / five-bath ranch-style home is located on five-acres in the estate area of Carmel commonly known as Jacks Peak. Although secluded and quiet, it is conveniently and centrally situated between Carmel and Monterey. You will be just minutes from anywhere on the entire Monterey Peninsula, yet surrounded by majestic oak and pine trees, with a huge yard in which to play.
Built in the 40’s, remodeled in the 60’s and recently updated, this home is perfect for family vacations, corporate retreats, and other special occasions. It is a wonderful place to gather for a family reunion, anniversary or important birthday celebration.
If you are interested please be aware that our property, while centrally located, is surrounded by five-acre estates with neighbors who appreciate this unique natural setting. In consideration of our neighbors, we have limits on the size and nature of parties, loud music or noisy activities (especially outside) and on anything that may disrupt the neighborhood. The property is not a venue for large parties or events.
All five bedrooms have queen beds and each bedroom has its own bathroom with shower. The house sleeps 10 comfortably. There is ample floor space and we have a couple of airbeds and mats to accommodate more, especially children, if needed.
Amenities include a cozy hot tub for two on a large deck off the master bedroom, with a custom-built in-ground hot tub for larger groups just a few steps away. Croquet, basketball, badminton, volleyball, bocce ball and Frisbee equipment are all located on-site and there is plenty room to play. There is a large front lawn that is seasonally green when rain is available. There is also a large brick patio with tables, chairs and fireplace that can be used in the winter. No outside fires are permitted during fire season (generally April - Nov).
Both the large living room and master bedroom have fireplaces. The living room has a vintage piano, two sofas, two club chairs, a corner TV and stereo. The French doors in the living room open onto a welcoming, bright, brick-floor enclosed Lanai with skylights.
The dining room has a table that is made for eight but will easily seat 10. Many a family gathering has led to improvised (yet cramped) seating for up to 12. French doors lead to a large backyard deck, which features a large table with six chairs, a small table with two chairs, a built-in bench and two lounge chairs. There is a five-burner gas grill and two propane heaters.
Off the dining room is a modest fully stocked kitchen with a large work island and windows to the wooded backyard. There is also a kitchen nook (host to many beautiful sunrises), with a small dining table, bench and four chairs.
The four bedrooms on the main floor, the living room, dining room, and hallways all feature oak hardwood floors. The kitchen floor is refinished fir. Area rugs are mostly oriental. Each bedroom has an attached bathroom, with shower.
The daylight downstairs has recently been renovated with new carpet and tile. It features a large, bright bedroom with a built-in desk and views of the garden, a bathroom, small 11 X 13 play area and laundry facilities.

We so enjoyed our stay at this tranquil home. The property was restorative and so beautiful.
We rented this lovely home to celebrate our Mother's 95th Birthday. We stayed for a week and did not want to leave. The house was beautiful and David was kind and wonderful. I would recommend this home to anyone who wants to stay in Monterrey area and want to relax. The house was very clean. We needed 5 bedrooms and 5 baths, it was perfect for the 8 of us. Thank you so much. The Droogsma
Perfect home away from home
We had the most wonderful stay at this Jack's Peak property this last weekend. We had multiple families (all with small children) coming into town for the marathon, and this house ended up being the perfect accommodations for us. Centrally located, private, a great dose of nature and the outdoors, while also providing all the amenities you may need. David is super responsive and provides just the right amount of guidance that you may need - while also being gracious hosts - they even had snacks waiting for us upon arrival. We would definitely consider renting here again and recommend to anyone traveling with kids.
Come for the house, stay for the owners!
I can't think of where to begin with this property. The history, the heritage, the family...you name it, everything is a 10! David and Patti were amazing hosts and this house was great for our large group. I have never been a big fan of this style of rental vs. a hotel, but with a group of 8, the pricing was right and after our trip my mind has been changed. I felt like I was at home and when you are on the road for 3 weeks of the month, it is nice to get that break from your traditional hotel living.
Thank you very much, David and Patti for sharing not only your wonderful home, but your family and history with us.
If you are debating about this rental, don't think twice and book it!
Very private and scenic. Great for families and nature lovers.
Our extended family was in the Carmel/Monterey area for a wedding, and this was the perfect location to reach both towns. In fact, you’re just a short drive from both but it feels like worlds away because the house is tucked in such a private setting. The house was spread out and accommodated our several generations nicely. We all enjoyed the spacious deck, lovely gardens and large (and hot!) outdoor jacuzzi. While the house wasn’t super modern, it was cozy and nicely furnished. We would definitely stay there again.
This is my favorite of many past house rentals.
The house and grounds were charming, well tended, private, comfortable, and magical. We enjoyed the sunny lawn area playing bocce ball, the magnificent oak trees, flowering plants, and acres of coastal woodlands. Inside, comfortable furniture, and a fireplace we were encouraged to use, was perfect for lounging, reading, and visiting. We cooked in an extremely well supplied kitchen and ate in the spacious dining room. With 5 bedrooms, each with its own bath, we could retire to our own little worlds. Being close to the greater Monterey/Carmel area, field trips were easily accessible. A lovely park at the top of Jack's Peak had walking trails and gorgeous views of the bay and ocean. I highly recommend this property.
Hidden gem in convenient location
We had a group of 9 people and the house fit all of us perfectly. Everyone had their own space and bathroom. The kitchen and dining area are a good size and lead right out to the deck that overlooks a beautiful property. Everything inside was easy to find and fully stocked.
There is a lot to enjoy on the property itself. The Owners are great, easy to communicate with and very responsive.
The location can't be beat. You are hidden away in the woods yet close to all points of interest.
Jacks Retreat lives up to its name and is definitely a wonderful place to stay.
