Our special and spacious five-bed / five-bath ranch-style home is located on five-acres in the estate area of Carmel commonly known as Jacks Peak. Although secluded and quiet, it is conveniently and centrally situated between Carmel and Monterey. You will be just minutes from anywhere on the entire Monterey Peninsula, yet surrounded by majestic oak and pine trees, with a huge yard in which to play.
Built in the 40’s, remodeled in the 60’s and recently updated, this home is perfect for family vacations, corporate retreats, and other special occasions. It is a wonderful place to gather for a family reunion, anniversary or important birthday celebration.
If you are interested please be aware that our property, while centrally located, is surrounded by five-acre estates with neighbors who appreciate this unique natural setting. In consideration of our neighbors, we have limits on the size and nature of parties, loud music or noisy activities (especially outside) and on anything that may disrupt the neighborhood. The property is not a venue for large parties or events.
All five bedrooms have queen beds and each bedroom has its own bathroom with shower. The house sleeps 10 comfortably. There is ample floor space and we have a couple of airbeds and mats to accommodate more, especially children, if needed.
Amenities include a cozy hot tub for two on a large deck off the master bedroom, with a custom-built in-ground hot tub for larger groups just a few steps away. Croquet, basketball, badminton, volleyball, bocce ball and Frisbee equipment are all located on-site and there is plenty room to play. There is a large front lawn that is seasonally green when rain is available. There is also a large brick patio with tables, chairs and fireplace that can be used in the winter. No outside fires are permitted during fire season (generally April - Nov).
Both the large living room and master bedroom have fireplaces. The living room has a vintage piano, two sofas, two club chairs, a corner TV and stereo. The French doors in the living room open onto a welcoming, bright, brick-floor enclosed Lanai with skylights.
The dining room has a table that is made for eight but will easily seat 10. Many a family gathering has led to improvised (yet cramped) seating for up to 12. French doors lead to a large backyard deck, which features a large table with six chairs, a small table with two chairs, a built-in bench and two lounge chairs. There is a five-burner gas grill and two propane heaters.
Off the dining room is a modest fully stocked kitchen with a large work island and windows to the wooded backyard. There is also a kitchen nook (host to many beautiful sunrises), with a small dining table, bench and four chairs.
The four bedrooms on the main floor, the living room, dining room, and hallways all feature oak hardwood floors. The kitchen floor is refinished fir. Area rugs are mostly oriental. Each bedroom has an attached bathroom, with shower.
The daylight downstairs has recently been renovated with new carpet and tile. It features a large, bright bedroom with a built-in desk and views of the garden, a bathroom, small 11 X 13 play area and laundry facilities.

Vacation of a lifetime! We've taken 6 one-week trips together as a family of 12 (kids/grandkids). This was by far the best! Why? Peaceful. Secluded. Near EVERYTHING (as in 10-20 min). Roomy. Rooms all awesome. Teen boys and teen girls loved their rooms. Master bedroom is more like a home in itself. Large TV, enormous bath, view of the trees, deer (all the time!!, about 6 of them, little ones suckling mommy!), step out o jacuzzi (while 6 people can be in the "other" jacuzzi!!), 2 very comfortable chairs. We all had a shower in our rooms. Between the kitchen and dining room, easy to all sit and eat or play games. Living room enormous. Loved the old library, records, historical stuff. Furniture so comfortable, clean, and so durable you don't have to worry about getting anything dirty. So much play room on the floor in the living room. We loved eating on the deck, using the BBQ and had the 2 heaters on one evening. Took about a 15 minute walk in the enormous woods which are on property. Watching woodpecker families play together, feeding bluejays, getting scolded by squirrels, just awesome! Kids 2-19. In one accord: Best vacation ever Papa and Nana! Oh, the owners were totally available nearby, with a quick phone call, but never did we feel like they were around. Plenty of everything you need in the kitchen, including the dishwasher. And, did we love playing ping pong, bocci ball, they have the best frisbee we've ever used, and hitting plastic golf balls in the big yard. Even had clubs there! Eating cherries from the trees, hey, we could go on. Go.
This was our second time staying at this beautiful property. We have rented many VRBO accommodations for our adult-children family reunions, and this is without a doubt the best set-up for our preferred 5 bed/5 bath. Lots of privacy for bedrooms but many wonderful, comfortable gathering spaces for coming together. Beautiful large deck to soak in the view. Peaceful and secluded. Very close and centrally located on the Monterey Peninsula, easy to get everywhere. Easy access to shopping, activities, and restaurants (though we ate at home - great kitchen and dining space!) Very responsive and friendly owners. The Monterey Peninsula is a great place for a family gathering and Jack's Peak is a fantastic place to stay.
We rented this property at Jacks Peek in September 2016 to celebrate our anniversary with our family. We had eleven adults and one toddler for most of a week. The location offered easy access to a range of activities in Monterey Bay. The property is in a secluded area with good shopping and restaurants close by.
We have rented several VRBO accommodations, large and small, over the past few years. This was by far the most welcoming home we have had the pleasure to stay in. there was ample space for large group activities as well as plenty of serene niches for more private moments. Having five bedrooms with private baths and the more than ample common areas created a very easy living environment for eleven people. The kitchen is very well equipped.
It is very easy to get lost in the very large collection of both old and new books extending from floor to ceiling in the main room. The house is full of photos and memorabilia of the owner’s family through their many years in the home. We got a sense it was a home that was well lived in. The setting seemed to create an open invitation for us to create some of our own memories, which we thoroughly enjoyed doing.
Although we have stayed in a lot of VRBO properties, this is the first property we felt strong enough about the home and the owners to write a review. Our experience was very good, and memorable.
We came for our fourth sons wedding. Our other kids, their spouses, 6 grandchildren under 8 and a babysitter met us here. The house was perfect for everyone! Grandma and Grandpa got one of the smaller rooms so the kids with grand-kids could have room to spread out. The kitchen and adjacent dining were just right to fit everyone for meals. The appliances are fairly new, the range/stove handled our big meals. The kids really enjoyed hanging out in the large hot tub at the end of the day. It was a great gathering place for our son and his groomsmen and girlfriends who were staying at another home near by.
There was lots for the grandchildren to explore outdoors. They needed supervision because the woods are naturally wild.
The owners had the house well stocked with plenty of bedding an towel's. There was even some condiments left over that we used.
My wife and I were very blessed to be able to enjoy our time with our family in beautiful surroundings!
Thanks David and Patti
10 of my family gathered from across the country and had a wonderful week. We do this regularly and have stayed in a number of nice homes but Jacks Peak is one of the most comfortable and most welcoming we've tried.
The family has been very generous making things visitors might need or enjoy available. This is everything from supplies and linens to games, music, books, gardens, hot tubs, even a piano in the living room and desks and easy chairs in most of the bedrooms. We were as comfortable as if we were at home.
The five bedrooms and five bathrooms were large, comfortable, and well-furnished. We used all five and everyone remarked on the comfort, privacy, and convenience. The kitchen and dining room were just as nice, well-stocked with everything needed and large enough that the 10 of us could gather at one table. The deck was the same: large, comfortable, well-furnished (including a very nice gas grill and gas heaters), and in the sun all day.
Access to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, and Moss Landing was very easy. The property is outside town in a hilly, wooded, and quiet area, but it is only a 2 minute drive to Hiway 1 and the Del Monte Center and 10 minutes to Carmel and the Aquarium.
I hope we have the chance to return someday and I wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone who wants a comfortable, relaxing getaway.
What a fantastic place to spend a week with family that came from all over the country! David and Patti were outstanding hosts and everyone in our party absolutely loved the property! It truly felt like a home away from home for the week!
We rented this house for my graduation from Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and as a place to host a small 1st birthday party for my son. Most of use flew into San Jose and rented cars for the drive down to Monterey. The house was well stocked (soap, paper towels, etc) and the kitchen had all the basics to support making meals for our entire group. The back deck was a perfect place to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and the large hot tub made for some relaxing evenings. There was plenty of space for our group of 11 adults and a baby to eat together in the dining room and spend time together in the living room.
We took advantage of the Monterey Bay Aquarium passes and spent an afternoon visiting the aquarium and cannery row. We enjoyed walks around the neighborhood as a family, and the easy access to the highway for a drive down 17-mile drive and the coast.
I would not hesitate for a second to come back to Jack's Peak Retreat... it was an incredible place to spend time with family! Thanks so much David, Patti, and the rest of your family for being such great hosts!
Jack’s Peak Retreat is a treasure of a vacation home created by David and Patti! I cannot say enough about the wonderful, warm and welcoming atmosphere that we felt upon arrival and felt the entire time there. We had a family wedding in Carmel and rented the home as a gathering place for 8 of my family members to enjoy. We hosted a small rehearsal dinner and what a huge success as it provided the opportunity and space for both families to mingle, enjoy and get to know each other. The grounds are just stunning, the kitchen has everything you could possibly need, the beds are ever so cozy, the decks are spacious and provide a picturesque view of the surrounding trees (especially at night), the hot tub again is surrounded by those trees…everything about it was a WOW! We loved every minute and only wish we could have stayed longer!
