Do reviews tell it all? We think so, especially since so many of our guests have stayed at many vacation rentals, and say that ours is THE best! Check them out under 'Reviews'...
Looking for the perfect weekend retreat less than an hour from Denver, but surrounded by the great outdoors? Our stream-side home at St. Mary's Glacier has it all.
Romance? The sound of the creek just yards away fills the home from almost every window; the great room with a vaulted paneled ceiling and windows filling the entire southern wall with a view of the stream below and Mt. Evans in the distance; a fireplace nestled in a stone hearth; and warm touches everywhere - knit throws to wrap up in, soft lighting, natural hickory floors, paneled ceilings in every room, and windows that open up your view to the great outdoors.
Nature? Stroll through our five acres with our guidebooks and identify the flora and fauna, or gather your own kindling for that evening's fire. Our property goes north to the road that borders Lake Quivera - a perfect early morning stroll to catch the sunrise while waiting for your coffee to brew. From our deck (and sometimes, ON our deck) I've seen moose, deer, coyote, fox, bear, beaver, muskrat as well as 48 different species of birds. We keep food in stock for the feeders so you'll have a chance to view them too.
Outdoor adventure? We'll show you the nearby hiking trails; we've got two pairs of snowshoes,, hiking sticks and that extra pair of thick gloves. We'll show you where you can find the scree and timber brought down by an avalanche; where flocks of bluebirds return every March just as the pasque flowers begin to bloom. And challenge you to find the small unmarked gravesite up on Yankee Hill.
A retreat for the mind and heart? We have unusual books on almost every subject - find an old favorite or make a new discovery. We have a computerized telescope - take it down to our 'star field' and navigate your way around the incredible mountain sky far away from city lights and pollution.
And finally, we've tried to think of the things that will make your visit perfect...there's a large propane grill on the upper level deck; the TV is in it's own room on the entry level so the sports fanatics don't intrude on those upstairs contemplating nature. Lots of room for privacy, with the TV room, bedroom and bath on entry level; the great room, 2nd bedroom, 2nd bath, kitchen and dining area on the middle level, and the loft above it all (perfect place for the kids to camp in the evening). We've stocked the kitchen with all the usual things and then some, and our medicine cabinet has the usual first aid items.
We'll have lots of brochures on hand - to help you find the perfect place to go antiquing or dining or where to explore the unique recreation that the local towns provide, as well as a large map of the St. Mary's area. And lots of firewood stockpiled for the evenings. Remember - St. Mary's - it's more than just the glacier!

My husband John and I retired in 2009, leaving us more time to spend training our dogs (German Shorthaired Pointers), more time for gardening, and more time to kick back at our home up at St. Mary's. Add three wonderful young grandkids to the mix, and we are busy folks indeed! In our book collection at the mountain house, you'll see what eclectic interests we have...Zen, nature, all things political (well, that's John's interest anyway), writing, memoirs and biographies, interior design and decorating, and cooking (again, that's John's baliwick). John is a sports fanatic and my counterpoint to his TV watching is to gaze for hours out the windows, tuning in to the magical life of the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. And it is now my personal passion to enable you to reconnect with whatever is important to you - a budding photography or writing career, the beauty of nature, the challenge of being physically fit, or reconnecting/connecting with that special person in your life. Join us at Saudade for a renewal of the spirit...
The Owner purchased this cabin in 1998
Our busy lives in Boulder cried out for a retreat that we could access within an hour's drive, yet a place where we could truly feel 'away from it all'. Having spent summers with my grandparents on a lake in south Jersey, being close to water was a must. For with water, comes wildlife, and that sense of peace that lets the soul be nurtured by Wallace Stegner's 'all the little live things'...
Whether you are in the mood for the adventurous two hour hike around the back bowl of St. Mary's Glacier, or a stroll on the acres around the house taking nature photographs, there is something here for every mood. Each June we stock the trout pond just beyond the bedroom window. A year round underground spring bubbles to the surface on the hillside below the house; explore where the beaver dam has eroded and now native grasses are re-established along the stream bed. And on a windy night, the outdoor lights illuminate the Engleman Spruce swaying just beyond the deck, creating the illusion of a ship plowing through ocean waves. Lie in bed at night listening to the sound of rushing water, heard year round until the banks of snow completely cover the stream bed...and then the sound is replaced by the winter winds high in the treetops. Recent wildlife on our property include moose, beaver and pine marten, plus, of course, the foxes. Open up your senses and feel your spirit soar...
As we begin booking for the 2014 Summer season, wanted to post this review from one of this summer's honeymoon couples, taken from our guest book up at the cabin: "We cannot thank you enough for an amazing honeymoon. The cabin felt like the perfect sanctuary, we felt like were were completely secluded from everyone and thoroughly enjoyed all the beautiful surroundings. We loved just sitting outside on the deck and reading books together - it was so peaceful with the sound of the creek. Birdwatchng had to be one of our favorite things, especially watching the hummingbirds. And it was also nice to be so close to Idaho Springs. There were many great restauants we ate at this week. Thank you for extending your home to us! We would love to come back again!"
This is a wonderful place to get away from it all. Lots of privacy, comfort and natural beauty. Highly recommended!

My wife and I recently spent the most beautiful week at the appropriately named Saudade. It was as if we left our home in Florida and were transported to our own home located in a new and breathtaking environment. All the comforts of home are available there. CJ has done an amazing job of providing a clean, up to date, well supplied, and well document vacation escape. With detailed information provided for everything from your best options for hiking, to her favorite places in town, and even on how to operate the fire place. We spent the first two days, by the fireplace, staring out the windows of the cabin watching the the snow fall...out every window is a post card view. CJ left us Fox food in the freezer to attract the fox, as well as bird seed and many bird feeders to attract the most beautiful local birds to your window. On the table there is a detailed hike guide with pictures of CJ and John's own hiking experiences to help you get out on the trail. We found our hike to St Mary's Glacier was a very rewarding hike. Assisted by the cold weather gloves, snow shoes and hiking poles that were provided it was a reachable, inspiring, and a beautiful place to visit at around 11000ft. The week we were there we received over three feet of the most beautiful powder like snow you could imagine. The road crews where very quick to clean up the roads. Meanwhile, my wife's wish every morning...to be snowed in. Our stay at the cabin in March touched a place in my wife's heart that can only be explained by this word Saudade. She described to me a fear of not being able to take it all in. That some how she might not be able to hold the memories of this place close enough to her heart, because of its vast beauty. Go, enjoy, and unwind.

There is always a battle uncertainty when booking online because you won't get a chance to see the place/location until you get there and won't have a sense of the owner until you engage with them a bit further along in the process. I guess that's why reviews are important, but even then reviews can at times be inconsistent and difficult to trust. If you're reading this, make sure you also look at the other reviews of this property - they are consistently good, and there are plenty of reasons why that is the case. First and foremost, it would difficult to find a more hospitable and caring owner. CJ is incredibly responsive and deeply cares that you enjoy your stay. Without sounding trite, she is what people call "an incredibly nice person." Case in point, I accidentally left my watch behind after our stay and she emailed me to tell me she had found it, mailed it to me in Canada, and then told me not to worry about the $25 that it cost her to send it. Not many people would do that. I hope this little tidbit is helpful information to you, not because you might also leave your watch (or whatnot) behind, but because it shows what kind of person CJ is generally. With her, you are in good hands.
Another good reason why the place gets good reviews is because of, well, the place. If you're looking for a cabin in the woods, then this is a very idyllic cabin in the woods. We came over new year's and the setting was beautiful. In particular we liked cozying up to the wood burning fireplace after a tasty meal on the BBQ. The decor is cute and the amenities are modern. Everything was exceptionally clean. CJ even left us "fox food" in the fridge to help us have a citing.
One day we went skiing at Vale, which was great. Before booking this place we scouted condos in Vale itself. The Vale Village is very charming, but one night there would have cost us our full stay at CJ's place. There was a bit of a drive, but the fact of having an entire cabin in a much more quiet and beautiful setting was completely worth it. Again, it's hard to realize this until you are there. We felt uncertain right up until we parked our car in front of the cabin. But then the uncertainty cleared, rapidly. The next day we hiked up St. Marys glacier which was a lot of fun. The air gets thin up there but the views are stunning!! Again, this was something that CJ helpfully recommended based on our interests. Needless to say, if you're looking for a cozy cabin getaway, this place is a sure bet!
This cabin was everything i hoped for. CJ thought of everything u could have needed plus some. When we arrived it was dark but what we woke up to was more than we had hoped. I would def recommmend this place. Price and value were a plus. Thanks for the great stay . I hope to be back.
My husband and I took a little escape and stayed for 3 nights at a time (Halloween) when snow was questionable. A few days before our arrival however, snow blanketed the top of the mountain where Saudade rests. We left Denver at a balmy 70 degrees, and the temps dropped as we approached Idaho Springs. Driving the small 8 mile paved road up the mountain, little snow flurries started hitting the car and snow was blanketing the ground. CJ's directions are great, although we did not see any Big Horn Sheep, which was disappointing! We finally pulled into the snowy driveway with big grins on our faces.
After unloading our bags and groceries from the car (buy ahead of time - good advice!), we immediately pulled on our snow pants & wandered the property. Sitting by the stream in front of the cabin was perfect - (https://www.instagram.com/lizcoblaz/ if you want to see my video/pics!).
We settled in & started a fire as it got dark, watching the birds, hoping for critters to appear, other than the mean squirrel on the deck.
The next day we wandered around Lake Quivera, the private fishing lake close by, and also hiked up to St. Mary's Glacier. All very beautiful and breathtaking (literally!). We finally got back in the car on the 3rd day and drove into Georgetown, visiting the Hotel de Paris Museum (great tour!!), and wandering around the shops.
On our final night we caught a glimpse of the red fox that had been leaving its tracks around the property. That was great, but by the time we threw out some fox food (a cabin bonus!), it ran away & then we were only visited by a raccoon.
There is so much to do and see, while staying at this cabin, as well as big comfy chairs that allow you to sit and do nothing in your stretchy pants. CJ and John have thought of every amenity to make for the best getaway possible. I highly recommend others to go, but not too many, because we want to stay again as well!
Thank you again, CJ & John, for opening your cabin to us & being so very accommodating and inviting. It was perfect.
When we see a cabin with this many "5 Star" ratings, it's hard to believe that kind of excellence is possible- so we booked based on these glowing reviews- but wondered how a place could be so amazing.
Then we found it even surpassed our expectations!- (and we rent cabins often.) My husband and I arrived to find a hand-written card and a bottle of wine- a fireplace ready to light- eucalyptus sheets-the largest selection of books I've ever seen (WONDERFUL books) - and during our stay we had the joy of identifying over 18 types of birds. In fact, I learned that the chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches would land on my hand when it was filled with seed! What a delight!!
There were guide books on birds and stars and animals and trees- and much more. It's a cabin AND a vast library! Our favorite book was called "The Wonders of Solitude," which was quite appropriate for our stay, which included an early snow that blanketed the pines and mountains and gave us a cozy couple of days cooking in their well-equipped kitchen (better than what we have at home!)-ample reading and bird-watching. The cabin is so charming there's no reason to leave!
But of course we needed to explore- so we hiked to the St Mary's Glacier, walked to the lake up the road, took trips to nearby Idaho Springs (we loved fish tacos at Tommy Knocker's), and to nearby Golden. And driving back to the cabin isn't tedious at all- it's a delight with stellar views and a good safe road.
It's obvious that CJ and John, the owners, love making this cabin an "experience" that will refresh, pamper and inspire their guests. We would rate this more than five stars if we could!
