Do reviews tell it all? We think so, especially since so many of our guests have stayed at many vacation rentals, and say that ours is THE best! Check them out under 'Reviews'...
Looking for the perfect weekend retreat less than an hour from Denver, but surrounded by the great outdoors? Our stream-side home at St. Mary's Glacier has it all.
Romance? The sound of the creek just yards away fills the home from almost every window; the great room with a vaulted paneled ceiling and windows filling the entire southern wall with a view of the stream below and Mt. Evans in the distance; a fireplace nestled in a stone hearth; and warm touches everywhere - knit throws to wrap up in, soft lighting, natural hickory floors, paneled ceilings in every room, and windows that open up your view to the great outdoors.
Nature? Stroll through our five acres with our guidebooks and identify the flora and fauna, or gather your own kindling for that evening's fire. Our property goes north to the road that borders Lake Quivera - a perfect early morning stroll to catch the sunrise while waiting for your coffee to brew. From our deck (and sometimes, ON our deck) I've seen moose, deer, coyote, fox, bear, beaver, muskrat as well as 48 different species of birds. We keep food in stock for the feeders so you'll have a chance to view them too.
Outdoor adventure? We'll show you the nearby hiking trails and we'll show you where you can find the scree and timber brought down by an avalanche; where flocks of bluebirds return every March just as the pasque flowers begin to bloom. And challenge you to find the small unmarked gravesite up on Yankee Hill.
A retreat for the mind and heart? We have unusual books on almost every subject - find an old favorite or make a new discovery.
And finally, we've tried to think of the things that will make your visit perfect...there's a large propane grill on the upper level deck; the TV is in it's own room on the entry level so the sports fanatics don't intrude on those upstairs contemplating nature. Lots of room for privacy, with the TV room, bedroom and bath on entry level; the great room, 2nd bedroom, 2nd bath, kitchen and dining area on the middle level, and the 3rd bedroom loft above it all (perfect place for the kids to camp in the evening). We've stocked the kitchen with all the usual things and then some, and our medicine cabinet has the usual first aid items.
We'll have lots of brochures on hand - to help you find the perfect place to go antiquing or dining or where to explore the unique recreation that the local towns provide, as well as a large map of the St. Mary's area. And lots of firewood stockpiled for the evenings. Remember - St. Mary's - it's more than just the glacier!

My husband John and I retired in 2009, leaving us more time to spend training our dogs (German Shorthaired Pointers), more time for gardening, and more time to kick back at our home up at St. Mary's. Add three wonderful young grandkids to the mix, and we are busy folks indeed! In our book collection at the mountain house, you'll see what eclectic interests we have...Zen, nature, all things political (well, that's John's interest anyway), writing, memoirs and biographies, interior design and decorating, and cooking (again, that's John's baliwick). John is a sports fanatic and my counterpoint to his TV watching is to gaze for hours out the windows, tuning in to the magical life of the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. And it is now my personal passion to enable you to reconnect with whatever is important to you - a budding photography or writing career, the beauty of nature, the challenge of being physically fit, or reconnecting/connecting with that special person in your life. Join us at Saudade for a renewal of the spirit...
Owner purchased this Cabin in 1998
Why Owner chose Saint Mary's
Our busy lives in Boulder cried out for a retreat that we could access within an hour's drive, yet a place where we could truly feel 'away from it all'. Having spent summers with my grandparents on a lake in south Jersey, being close to water was a must. For with water, comes wildlife, and that sense of peace that lets the soul be nurtured by Wallace Stegner's 'all the little live things'...
What makes this Cabin unique
Whether you are in the mood for the adventurous two hour hike around the back bowl of St. Mary's Glacier, or a stroll on the acres around the house taking nature photographs, there is something here for every mood. Fish for trout in 2 private lakes or the stream that runs through the property. A year round underground spring bubbles to the surface on the hillside below the house; explore where the beaver dam has eroded and now native grasses are re-established along the stream bed. And on a windy night, the outdoor lights illuminate the Engleman Spruce swaying just beyond the deck, creating the illusion of a ship plowing through ocean waves. Lie in bed at night listening to the sound of rushing water, heard year round until the banks of snow completely cover the stream bed...and then the sound is replaced by the winter winds high in the treetops. Recent wildlife on our property include moose, beaver and pine marten, plus, of course, the foxes. Open up your senses and feel your spirit soar...

Greatest getaway from the real world.
This cabin was breathtaking; deep in the mountains, away from the real world where peace of mind was all you could have. CJ is the most helpful of all owners. This cabin was stocked with everything, as though someone lives in it. My wife and I are so thankful for this experience and can't wait to go back. I really didn't want to go home. God awaits any conversation you want to have in that cabin. The GREATEST stay. Thanks for everything CJ.
It's always so wonderful to hear when someone connects with the beauty and comfort of our home. It's why we do what we do! And yes, because it was a 'second' home that we stayed at 3 nights of the week for many years, it resonates with all the memories of love with shared family and friends. We look forward to having you back!
Just what we needed....
This place was great! Just what the doctor ordered to get away to solitude. The Fireplace and cozy atmosphere was relaxing. We did a hike, Rented Snowmobiles in nearby Breckenridge and Ski'd one day at Copper Mountain. It was great that we were able to bring our four legged friend with. It made it feel like home. CJ was super responsive and great to work with. Can't wait to come back in the summer.
Very clean, warm and inviting. The perfect amount of seclusion.
We live in a city, were looking for a place to escape from it all and just relax. That’s exactly what we got! It is just the right amount of seclusion, close enough to everything.
The house is so warm and cozy. We loved the rustic cabin feel. The fireplace was magical and created the experience. There is so much natural beauty and wildlife surrounding! The hosts are very very organized and clear on all directions, they have everything you need!
We will be back!
We loved our week spent at Saudade. The cabin is secluded, affording us the chance to “get away from it all”! The owners were so nice to work with...they provided us with so much information about the cabin and what was available for us when we arrived. We relaxed, we rested, we read (there is an AMAZING selection of books at the cabin) and we explored the property, which is lovely. We had midnight visitors (a bear, and four fat raccoons!) and a daytime array of birds and squirrels to watch. We hiked, and then sat by the fire and watched the snow fall...it was perfect! A big thanks to C.J. and John for sharing their lovely cabin with us!
Pam, thanks so much for this wonderful review. Coming from folks who have stayed at many vacation rentals, this is praise indeed! And it always brings me such great pleasure when guests enjoy the same things that we do about our mountain home. We can't guarantee that every guest will see a bear, or the elusive martin, or a moose, but we do our best to conjure them up when we know wildlife watching is your thing!
Peaceful and Energizing
We loved our stay here! It was so relaxing and enjoyable to be immersed in nature, yet close to Idaho Springs and Central City. We especially enjoyed the hiking, bird-watching and the squirrels, chipmunks and racoons. We truly got "away from it all" and felt re-energized and de-stressed. Really loved sitting by the fire and relaxing on the deck. We were so happy and grateful that our bernese mountanin dog was welcome at this property! Abby LOVED her mountain adventures, the snow, being able to explore and "her" observation deck.
The home is fully stocked, and we appreciated the nice touches that the owners added---games, puzzles, wood for the fireplace, bird seed, spices/condiments, etc! CJ stayed on top of everything (road closures, power outage, weather conditions) and communicated very well with us. It was a stress-free, very enjoyable and beautiful home stay. Those trees, the stream, the views, wow. Thanks for a wonderful getaway!
Great cabin, with wonderful wildlife
We saw racoons, a stoat, squirrels, chipmunks, an otter, and countless beautiful birds during our stay. The cabin was very comfortable and well furnished, with lots of things to do all ready to go. The altitude affected my wife, so she couldn't hike to the glacier, but there was no need to leave the property to have a great time.
Nearby private lakes stocked with trout - 4 fishing passes included in your rental; private fishing in our creek and trout pond. Snowshoeing, birding, many off road ATV trails, Jeep trails. Ski/board 12 months a year on St. Mary's Glacier, only a 30 minute hike from our home. Shouting distance from National Forest Service land and trails. A photographer's paradise! Climb nearby Fourteeners - Mt. Evans, Mt. Bierstadt, Gray's & Torrey Peaks. White Water Rafting on Clear Creek, Ice Fishing, nearby ski resorts include Loveland, and A-Basin, snowboard at nearby Echo Park. Backpack provided.
