This unique paradise retreat for 2 is located in Vacationland on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Located only a few minutes’ walk to the Wai Opae tide pools, this romantic property features a private pond with its own 10 foot high waterfall. The average lot in Vacationland is a little over 8000sq ft. but this property is on 3 lots and backs up to 300 acres of undeveloped land offering a peaceful, quiet and private surroundings. Set in a secluded tropical garden setting you may pick apple bananas, mangoes, papaya and coconuts when in season.
This pristine and charming house has been decorated with vintage Hawaiian pieces that have been collected over many years. The house has a complete kitchen that was remodeled in 2011. There is a full bathroom upstairs and an outdoor shower downstairs. The studio opens on to a private lanai that was newly redecorated earlier this year. There is satellite TV and a phone for on island calls. This is a 2 story house but the downstairs is used for storage and is not connected with the upstairs.
This area has many beautiful warm ponds. Depending on the tides the water level will vary in all of these ponds including the pond on the property. There is a very large warm public pond at Ahalanui Park approximately 1 mile down the Red Road (HWY 137) that you can swim in at all tide levels.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The house was perfect for 2 people and the warm pool in the yard was fabulous! We also really enjoyed the visits from Tommy Mitzi's cat. It made us not miss our 2 cats so much. Hopefully we can come back some time in the future.
The property is all that you see in the listing and more. The location is the best possible to visit Hawaii Volcanoes and see the lava flows. There is so much to see and do in the area. The area is the "real" Hawaii.
The house itself has everything you need for a great stay. The pond is lovely the grounds beautiful and every need and detail has been thought of. If you want quiet comfort in a perfect setting this is your place to stay.
The owners are great the communication can't be beat.
This was one of the best rentals we have experienced. The house had everything we needed & if it wasn't there Mitzi would get it for us or help us in anyway we needed. She is the property manager & she lives next door. The pond is very awesome. We would snorkel or check out the volcano & come back in the afternoon & dip in the pond. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. We spent our mornings & evenings on the lanai. This is a very comfortable place to stay. We definitely would come back to stay again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at here. A morning snorkel exploring the tide pools less than 2 blocks away, followed by a casual swim in the warm pool down the way (Ahalanui) is a perfect start to the day. The location is not too bad for a day exploring Volcanoes National Park. The cottage itself is very cute and well cared for, we enjoyed morning coffee on the deck with its view of the garden. Perfect for two, this is on our list for our next trip for sure!
Place is even better than the listing makes it look!! The private tide pool was even more amazing than we could have expected. Bed was super comfortable. Plenty of house and beach towels provided. Super short walk to Kapoho tide pools which were great.
Only caveat is that if coqui frogs singing loudly all night is something that would bother you, you will need to plan ahead. I didn't mind it but my wife needed to wear earplugs.
This was a beautiful place to stay, great location, wonderful grounds, unique decor, and very well stocked with everything you could wish for. The waterfall fresh water pool that is naturally warmed was just great! Like your own personal resort! The outdoor shower was very appreciated. Be aware this side of the island has geckos, insects and wild pigs, and we "enjoyed" seeing all three, but that only led to more memories. Access to the tide pools is very easy, and they are an excellent place to snorkel and swim. Very safe except for the lava rock entry so just be careful in walking on it. I think the area is made for quiet vacationers who value nature and the beauty of the island and ocean, not party seekers who like lively bar life. Two problems I saw, which were likely addressed, electrical sparking was seen in one outdoor wall switch and a portable fan didn't work. Likely the high amount of rainfall caused both. Having the property manager next door was great when these problems were seen and you'll get immediate and friendly help if you need it. She can also give you advice on where and what to see. We would return to this unit in a heartbeat! If you have a problem with stairs you won't like this rental.
