Overview

Coastal Oregon Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Sea Gem Cottage is an oceanfront home six miles south of Newport, Oregon. Our home now has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a loft. The entire house has been completely remodeled with the additional bedroom and loft added as of February 2016.

There are bamboo floors throughout the house and travertine tiles in the bathroom. The home is decorated with modern furnishings. There are spectacular views of the beach and surf from every room of the house. The bedrooms have queen beds with storage drawers and wardrobes for your extended stay. The downstairs great room has seating for 6 at the dining table and a wall mounted television with media player.

Stairs from the great room lead up to the new loft area. Here you can find two twin beds on the garden side of the loft and a lounge area on the ocean side.

The house sits on a 40 foot tall bluff with a private path and stairs leading to the beach. The beach stretches for miles in either direction allowing for long walks on the beach where you rarely encounter another person.

About Winter Chung

Winter and Neil purchased this property in 2009 to be used as a getaway from their daily lives in Portland, Oregon. After completely remodeling the cottage, they began renting it so that others could also enjoy the beautiful Oregon Coast.

Winter Chung purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Winter Chung chose Coastal Oregon

The Newport area is the most beautiful and scenic part of the Oregon Coast in our opinion. There is abundant wildlife as well as the conveniences of a nearby city. Whales and seals have been viewed from the cottage. Seagulls and pelicans fly by the windows and float in the wind. The privacy granted by having a house on the ocean cannot be matched by a hotel or condo.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is built in the 1960's, but has been completely remodeled with tasteful, modern decor, yet keeping some of the original charm. It is challenging to find modern properties on the Oregon Coast, and this cottage will not disappoint.

Sea Gem Girl's Weekend

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing! The view, the decor, the quality of the stay is all around amazing. We did find out that the access to the beach is not for everyone. If you have any knee issues, the last part of the access is climbing down rocks, so it's not for everyone. Though the beach is great, barely saw anyone, tons of great rocks and shells to be found. You can hear the road from the house, but the waves do help drown it out. The only recommendation I have for the owner is changing out the shower head, I'm 5'4" and had to duck to get under the shower head. Maybe one that is on a arm that can be adjusted to a higher position. And maybe more than one towel per person.

We'll definitely be returning in the future! Definitely a gem. :)

Relaxing, expansive views of Pacific Ocean sunsets.

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect place to watch my first Pacific Ocean sunset. My husband and I arrived here after spending a few days in Astoria, then taking a beautiful easy drive down the coastal route.

What a pleasant place to call home for a few days!

We took long walks on the beach, both north and south. We drove a mile to Brian Booth State Park on a windy day and took a hike into the mountains. We drove North to Newport and Yaquina Head Lighthouse, to Devil's Punchbowl. We went to the Rogue Ale Brewery. Drank lots of coffee and wine. Binge watched shows and movies from the media player. Grilled steak. Drove up to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning and bought lots of souvenirs. Had grilled cheese and soup. Ate Tillamook ice cream every night before bed while watching the sun set and then the moon rise over the water.

The cottage is immaculate, with lots of attention to comfort and detail. The decorations are simple and elegant. I slept comfortably every night, especially with the sound of the surf through the screen door off the bedroom.

Like others have said, the kitchen is small. But I would say perfect for the size of the house. And yes, the view from the kitchen sink makes washing dishes a treat.

Exactly as you see in the photos - its great

  • 5 of 5

This was our final stay on a 3 week road trip from Squamish, BC to California (Disney etc) with our 5 year old son, and we wanted some coastal time on a beachfront, with views, and that ocean feeling similar to our familiar haunts of Tofino/Ucluelet

This met those expectations, characterful home with modern feel, and the new renovations with the loft were a great bonus for some relaxing times on the couch up there

Nice big dining table, good sized bathroom, great deck and views

Sound proofing was great, never noticed the highway, everyone slept very well

Enjoyed the deck in the evening, we were fine getting down to the beach with our son, and had a great long walk and exploration along South Beach

Amenities of Newport are so close by yet you feel nicely separated in this area

Smallest quibbles are the kitchen is smaller with lack of conventional oven, smaller fridge, and some may miss there being no dishwasher (but you do get the best 'washing-up' view instead)

But as the title of the review says, 'Exactly as you see in the photos'. Spotless

The rate is great, handling of booking etc by Winter was perfect, would definitely come back, as it seems most other visitors are going to do also!

Our favorite place on the Oregon Coast

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Sea Gem and I must say that this was the most memorable stay yet. With the remodel of the Sea Gem, it could not be more perfect. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary this stay and it compares to no other. We have experienced many VRBO rentals throughout Oregon and we continue to hope the Sea Gem is available for our anniversary dates. The entire home is set up for the most wonderful experience; every detail has been thought through and we appreciate that so much. Thank you Winter and Neil for opening your amazing home to us - we enjoy every memory made here.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

I booked this for a couples getaway and could not have asked for anything more, the house had everything you could think of plus more. Waking up and looking out the window to the swelling ocean and hearing the sound of the crashing waves is enough said. We where told we were the first to stay since the remodel after our trip. The place looked amazing and it had the feel as if that's the way its always been. You are just a quick drive to Newport and what a great place to buy fresh seafood to cook in the new kitchen. I am always reluctant when looking for a place on the coast with private beach access, and sometimes you cant find a definitive answer. Well this one has it, just a few steps down a trail then stairs and some rocks and your right on the beach. Both mornings we strolled the beach with not a person in sight; but by far my favorite thing about the place is the loft, I could sit up there for hours looking thru the binoculars out into the ocean for a sign of a whale. We brought with us a first time Oregon Coast visitor and my only complaint was the weather was way to nice for her trip.

Thanks :-)
