Located in historic Lakeside and just steps from Pier Street Beach, this newly renovated cottage marries the charm of yesterday with modern amenities.Great care and attention to detail was paid to assure that our guests would walk into the cottage and feel that they were in for a treat. Original beaded board ceilings, Douglas Fir wood floors, french doors and screened porch lend it character. The cottage is decorated in an eclectic style that mixes and matches vintage pieces with comfy furniture. As part of the renovation, new windows with full screens, two separate HVAC systems, one on each floor, and a 50 gallon hot water heater were installed. Bathrooms and kitchen have tile floors and new fixtures. Ceiling fans create cool breezes on the main floor rooms and porch. The Great Room has a 47 inch HD flat screen TV with cable and internet access. The Front Parlor has a 36 inch flat screen TV with DVD. Games, books, and toys for young and old are on hand for family night gatherings. A plus is two bedrooms and full bathroom on the main floor for guests who may have mobility issues.
In the evening, gather around the fire pit on the brick paver patio while the Grill Master works his magic cooking on the natural gas Charbroil 5 burner grill. Meals can be eaten at the Patio table and picnic table.
Stored in the boat house are toys, lawn games and bikes for the whole family to enjoy. A backyard swing is a favorite. Beach towels, beach chairs, beach toys and umbrella are available for your use and an outdoor shower will refresh you after a day at the beach.
Situated in Harbor Country, there is no shortage of leisure activities to be enjoyed. Antique buffs can hunt for treasures, cyclists can hop on backroad trails and hikers can explore nature. Visit the Farmers' Market, Vineyards, art galleries, outlet mall and casino.
A stay at the cottage is about family and traditions and shared experiences; Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks and sparklers, sand castles and sun burn, lightning bugs and hide and go seek. It is my intent that the guests who stay at the cottage will create their own special memories and family tradition and look fondly back or look forward to their vacation at 'True Blue'.
I grew up on the East coast and summered at the shore in New Jersey. It was a pleasure that was taken for granted. When I relocated to the Midwest, Lake Michigan became a worthy counterpart. The waves aren't as dramatic and the water isn't salty however I no longer have to worry about those jellyfish!
Rickie Hawkinson purchased this cottage in 2011
When we found the cottage, it was in a state of neglect after being left vacant for a few years. I like to say that she had good bones. I am a sucker for bead board ceilings and wide baseboards and trim. Throw in six paneled wood doors French Doors and hardwood floors and I am in heaven . The cottage has all this plus rooms that have angled ceilings and exposed rafters. This is authentic, not new to mimic old. We could imagine what she could look like with some hard work and determination. We had a vision of a cheerful, cozy cottage coming to life and being a wonderful place for friends and family to gather and to make memories like the cherished ones that I have of my childhood spent at the Jersey shore.
The cottage has history with its platted deed dated from the late 1880s and sits in the center of historic Lakeside, a beach community that dates back over one hundred years as a summer destination along Lake Michigan. There is a sense of being in touch with nature as you meander down paths lined by decades old pine trees with the roar of the lake on a blustery day in your ears. It is not uncommon to sight deer in the ravines and bluejays and cardinals perched in the trees. A highlight of the day is watching the breathtaking sunset over the lake with the orangery afterglow lighting up the sky. The cottage offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and allows one to take a deep breath and step back if only for a short respite.
We loved staying at the Blue Cottage. It was so charming and you can instantly tell Rickie has put lots of care into every detail. We loved how close it was to the beach and we loved the fire pit in the backyard. We had a large group of 12 women for a weekend and the house was perfect for us. We opted for a wine tour and the cottage was a great location to get to the wineries
This was a great place for our getaway. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

My large family has enjoyed this beautiful cottage for the last two years in a row and we booked it on our way home for next year. It is charming, well-equipped, clean, and spacious. The yard is perfect for kids to play in, adults to grill and have a drink in, and the entire family to enjoy a fire-pit. There are great places to eat near by and a zoo in Michigan City that the kids loved. A lovely berry picking farm is down the street. The older kids went kayaking. The beach is lovely too. And the owner couldn't be more gracious or accommodating. I highly recommend it!!
This is a charming house! There was 10 of us and there were plenty of towels and toilet paper for all. Those are things we've always run out of in other rentals! Not one thing was over looked it was lovely. Enjoyed the outdoor space too, plenty of room for our large group.
Perfect place for a long girls weekend to enjoy each other and relax. 9 of us fit very comfortably and it has all the amenities you will need and more! We all agreed we would be back and we can't wait to reunite with the Blue Cottage soon.
The Blue Cottage was a perfect setting for our large family getaway. Rickie has provided a beautiful, comfortable home that accommodates a quick and easy getaway. The setting is lovely and the easy beach access makes trips to the beach hassle free. The cottage is furnished with all the basics in the kitchen and baths which is a big plus when vacationing. We loved it!
The house was charming with summery rattan and wicker furniture. The screen porch offered a quiet and relaxing place for conversation or solitude. We explored the dunes and took bike rides. The huffy bike was great for a comfortable ride. The 2nd bike's derailleur was broken. I would definitely come back. The house was truly delightful.
Our second time back as a group. 4 Adults and 3 kids - last year we had 6 adults and 3 kids - house works perfectly. Two main floor bedrooms give adults privacy without kids if needed and 3 bedrooms and full bath upstairs creates a nice family suite.
Rickie is always very responsive and an amazing hostess - house feels like a relaxing vacation home the minute you walk in. DVDs and tv for the kids in front room for kids to have an early movie night and adults enjoy some catching up and wine. The firepit out back is always a great time with hot dogs and s'mores. Fall is truly the best time to be in the area. A nice 15 minute walk to the beach is a great way to start the crisp fall mornings or end the day.
Great proximity to everything in the area and on the lakeside of Red Arrow highway - which is key. Gas grill is handy for the few meals in - but a lot of great local eating options (to avoid doing dishes!). The annual stop at Dinges Farm for pumpkins and rides for the kids is the highlight of the weekend - capped off by outlet shopping as you head out from the area back to the work week.
Highly recommended without reservation by everyone who went.
Lakeside is the heart of several beach communities that straddle the shores of Lake Michigan in an area designated as Harbor Country . It is a quaint village dating back to the late 1800's and has been a vacation destination for over 100 years The historical Lakeside Inn was the gathering place of Chicagoans wanting to escape the heat of the city. One of its infamous guests was Al Capone who gathered here with his cronies for a game of cards. Today, it is as popular a place to stay as it was in years past.
Visitors can choose from a plethora of activities to entertain themselves. Antique shops and art galleries are dotted along Red Arrow Highway. There are several wineries that offer tours, tastings and food and entertainment. Three Oaks offers a theater with live performances and is the home of the Featherbone Factory which features shops and a micro whiskey distillery.
There are dedicated bicycling paths for the casual as well as the seasoned cyclists. Hiking and trails can be found in Warren Woods and Warren Dunes. The Galien River is a waterway for kayaking and canoeing. New Buffalo has a public boat launch.
For the thrill seekers, there is a casino to test one's luck.
A visit to Redamaks for their famous hamburgers and fries is a must as well as a trip into New Buffalo to eat at The Stray Dog.
There are may casual eateries as well as ones for fine dining such as Timothy's and Heston's. Luisa's Swedish Bakery is a local favorite for breads and sweet rolls and serves breakfast and lunch. There are long lines on weekends so get there early. The Farmers' Market is open weekends in Union Pier and should be on your list to visit to stock up on locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Last but not least is our Great Lake Michigan, where one can be entranced by its sights and sounds and fabulous sunsets.
