Villa Vista is a home away from home. This Mediterranean styled villa overlooks the enchanting Hodges bay and is nestled amidst the windswept fauna of Point Dubique on the east coast of Dominica. As its name suggests, it is a house of panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean, Hodges river as well as the majestic Mountain ranges of Morne Trois Piton and Morn Diablotin. Atlantic breezes refresh and inspire making this villa ideal for relaxation. In addition to the captivating views, you will delight in the pleasant sounds of the seasurf, parrots, seagulls, pelicans as well as the soothing melodies of the revitalizing winds that bless the villa.
This picturesque Villa Vista comprises two floors, the top floor housing the master bedroom and spa facilities. The ground floor has one and a half bathrooms and two bedrooms: a Queen-sized and two twin beds fondly called the green and blue rooms respectively. The kitchen is self-contained and outfitted with you in mind, to continue that home away from home experience. It comes complete with refrigerator, microwave, stove with oven, coffeemaker, and toaster. The living room is cosy with its bed/couch and flat screened television to keep you entertained- you may view a selection of local and foreign channels or just gaze at the beautiful scenery from this comfort zone. Or you may wish to recline on one of the deckchairs on the open terrace, engage in yoga or just swim in the revitalizing negative edged pool or just enjoy a good rum punch as you bask in the pool while gazing at the enthralling vista. If you like keeping fit, there is an invigorating walk or run down to the beckoning beach where you can engage one of the fishermen in conversation or just sit quietly alongside the rolling river or join in the relaxing art of fishing.
If you visit during the full moon, the nights will become your days and your nirvana. The upstairs master bedroom houses a king-sized bamboo bed, a hot tub and a pristine view of the land and seascape. All this can be enjoyed while you take a soothing soak in the villa’s Jacuzzi.
Villa Vista was built with you in mind, wireless/wifi to keep you linked with the rest of the world should you wish to remember that there is such a place, as the villa has a magical effect on all who enter. The many pictures were specially chosen to have you experience through visual impact our West Indian culture. All of them are by West Indians artists- Derek Walcott, Bosco Holder, Earl Etienne, Shalini to name a few; and depict aspects of our culture- cricket, carnival, our native Amerindians- the Kalinago of Dominica and the Garifuna of Belize, as well as our local dances (Bele).
Villavista is private enough for you to forget the world outside yet public enough for you to remember that Dominica is there to be explored. It is only a 20 minute drive from the airport-Melville Hall and is in close proximity to other well established guest houses. In the village of Calibishe, you can find quaint houses and shops and delectable eateries, also a mini winery to satisfy you. Calibishe is a quiet fishing village with warm, friendly people only too happy to help you experience the experience of a home away from home. It is also the home of red rocks, which add to the scenic quality of Villa Vista as well as the views all along the coast of Calibishe.

What a beautiful house Villa Vista is! Spectacular view, well appointed rooms, excellently equipped and a perfect location from which to explore the amazing island of Dominica. Chris, the owner, and Gweneth, the caretaker, could not have been kinder or more helpful. The house was spotless, the beds very comfortable, absolutely private, the house was a perfect setting for our holiday and for the wide age range in our group: from six to 79. We're already looking forward to returning to this incredibly special place.
Very luxurious, exceeded all our expectations, hike down to the secluded beach, breezy all the time, good cooking facilities, very private, Gweneth the caretaker was very helpful and gave us great advice on where to eat, shop and what to visit.
Our family, comprised of three middle school boys, flew into Melville on June 9th. From the moment we landed, we were engulfed in the friendliness that is Dominica. Chris Sorhaindo, the owner of Villa Vista, arranged for Lynn from Bonus car rental to scoop us up and drive us to the villa. Along the way, Lynn graciously offered an overview of Dominica including highlights of things to do, the town of Calibishe (the small town three minutes from the villa), where to purchase food, and much more. By the time we arrived at the villa (15 minutes north of the airport), we had more local insight to the island than we could have read in any of the guide books.
Upon our arrival at Villa Vista, we were greeted cheerily by Gweneth, the caretaker. She gave us a tour of the villa, a phone to make local calls on, and her contact information, just in case.
The villa, itself, is beautiful, and the views down the coast and the Hodges Beach steps below are beyond compare. We slept with the doors facing the pool and ocean open all night allowing the sea breezes to both cool the villa and serve as a natural mosquito deterrent. The beds all have mosquito nets, which we used as well, but could have easily done without. The kitchen had plenty of pots/pans etc. and opened to the patio at the counter area, which allowed for divine views and cooling breezes when cooking inside as well as grilling on the patio.
All in all, we were drawn to Dominica due to its untouched beauty. It is an island set back in time and a true gem. Go with a sense of adventure, and you will leave with enough photos and memories to last a lifetime. We are already planning our return to Villa Vista!
After taking Delta to Puerto Rico, we flew Liat Airlines to Dominica. Liat is a lovely airline with terrific customer service.
Flying through Puerto Rico made for an easy customs experience when reentering the US.
Driving is on the left, and horn signals are used by most when driving on the winding roads.
If you initiate contact by waving or saying hello, locals are incredibly friendly and will return the greeting. They are easily approachable for directions and insight as well.
Calibishe has two small grocery stores, an ATM machine (be aware that fees apply), a couple of small restaurants, and a gas station. There is also a small bakery just outside of town. If you prefer, they will deliver bread to the villa each morning.
Enjoy. We certainly did!
We arrived on the island at 9:30am due to our inter-island flight from Guadeloupe. We picked up our car and drove to the villa to drop off our luggage. The owner, Christopher and the caretaker, Gwenneth, greeted us.
While we waited for the villa to be cleaned we drove around Calibashie to get our bearings and then drove over to Portsmouth for lunch and groceries.
On our return to the villa, we were shown where everything was located, given directions about the wifi, gas grill, pool, etc. and we're also given a cell phone to use should we need it while on the island.
The villa was sparkling clean and as good, if not better than what the pictures show online.
The view is just gorgeous and the master bedroom was larger than expected.
The pool is a great plunge pool and was refreshing and cool. The pool itself gets sun from about 8:30 until 1:15. The patio and pool area gets sun until about 3:30.
The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were skimpy and they did not provide pillow covers for the spare pillows. Since we were only using one bedroom, we borrowed some from another bedroom (pillows thin and skimpy in all bedrooms).
The villa has lots of stone and the floors and bathrooms are very nice looking.
The gas grill was in excellent shape and worked very well. So many times the grills on the islands are old and rusty and do not cook the food very well, this was not the case here. I was even able to grill some nice BBQ chicken one night for dinner without having anything cook too much or too little.
Wifi was strong and we could even connect to DISH back home in the evening to watch a recorded show.
The only drawback is that there is no dishwasher.
Be sure to save your plastic bags from shopping as you will need them for trash bags. They only provided one trash bag and expect you to use bags from the grocery store (they will provide extras if needed).
If you have never stayed on an island in the hills, it may take a bit to get used to the wind. It made for very comfortable days by the pool, but when rain came at night, the winds got stronger and woke us up once or twice.
It was also too chilly to enjoy dinner sitting out on the deck by the pool.
A couple of locals told us that the stronger winds are not typical for this time of the year. It usually does not get this windy until hurricane season.
The wind does keep all of the mosquitos away - so that was a plus. We had no issues with skeeters or any type of insect the entire stay on the island.
We stayed at Villa Vista for 12 days. The views from the decks are superb and the location is perfect. Its great getting up in the morning and watching the sun rise. Lots of birds to keep you company - hummingbirds galore. It’s great to go out on the deck at night and watch the stars. The Villa feels very private and one can easily melt into the raw beauty of Dominica…
The Villa is well-equipped and comfortable, with everything you could possibly need for a home away from home. The appliances are in good working order. It is great to have a BBQ available – bought fish from fisherman and cooked them on the BBQ. There is no air-conditioning however it was never needed as the breezes kept it comfortable.
Chris and Gweneth made our stay wonderful. Chris contacted us several times during our stay to ensure that everything was okay. The website for the Villa represents the Villa accurately.
The Villa is close (1 MILE) to the village of Calibishie – just for the exercise we walked to town every morning. There is a small grocery store in Calibishie to get the basics but need to go to Portsmouth/Picard for a wider choice of groceries. If you time it right in the morning you can bump into the roving bread truck to get fresh bread and pastries.
There are a few restaurants in town and POZ restaurant is a close 5-10 min walk without having to venture into town - loved the fig pie appetizer.
There are a few places to visit that are close by – Red Rock (Next Street after POZ), Batibou Beach (about 10 min drive – what a great lunch at the beach bar) and Number One Beach. Driving distances/times – I could never make Portsmouth in less than 40 minutes as the roads are full of twists/curves and elevation changes. It made diving a bit of a chore as you eat up 90+ minutes just getting back and forth. There is a copy of Bradts Dominica travel guide in the Villa. It was great to have it and in retrospect we should have had the guide before our visit so we could have better planned our trip as there is so much to see and do in Dominica.
We enjoyed our stay at the Villa very much.
This house is beautiful. I just wished my own house was this great. The master shower is awesome. The house is built so well and there is so much detail to the work in the quality of the house. The view from the house is worth a million bucks. It was so nice to BBQ and relax out there looking at the view. The location is in a quiet neighborhood with other nice houses.
There is a local cell phone at the house for your own personal use. You can go to many places to put minutes on it and it's inexpensive. Just bring the phone in to certain places that have the LIME sign on the outside. There is an awesome place for good and drinks within walking distance from the house called POZ for those who do not rent a car.
There are beautiful beaches in each direction from the house off the main road. There are some hiking places close by and a fairly new little tour very close to the house towards the south.
Would I book this place again? Most definitely. I wish I can go back next week. There is so much more we want to see and explore there.
