A typical rural gîte in the small village of Ercé, in the heart of the Pyrenees Regional Natural Park. 'Le reflet de la lune' (English: Under the Moonlight) is a former barn that I restored in its original style with stone walls and slate roof. The little house is situated in the middle of the village, but quietly behind my house in the second row. In the house and on the terraces one is on its own.
Ercé is situated 650 meters above sea level and has 350 inhabitants. The slopes, covered by green forests, and green meadows along the river dominate the picture. The people live modestly, mostly of raising cattle. The car is parked in front of my house on a private parking, a small lane leads to the gîte (50 m) for pedestrians only. My name is Marie-Noëlle, I was born here and I would like to acquaint you with the unique and beautiful aspects of my home country.
Description of the gîte

In Ercé you will find: a Bureau de Poste, an épicerie (with daily fresh bread) and (French) newspapers, a restaurant serving regional cuisine. Some pubs and the next doctor's office are in Oust (4 miles), the pharmacy in Seix, and small and large supermarkets. Some farmers sell cheese, honey, etc. from the farm.
Activities: marked trails start outside the front door of my gîte, for example to Cominac, a picturesque mountain village with a panoramic view of Mt Valier (3 miles). You can also fish for trout, go rafting or kayaking, pick berries and mushrooms, explore caves, visit the unique mountain strongholds of the Cathars, romanesque churches and monasteries (eg in St. Girons). There is a tennis court, a climbing garden and spa in Aulus (6 mls), and in the winter to ski shuttle connects Ercé with the station at Guzet (12 mls.).
At Ercé and In my cosy little gîte 'Le reflet de la lune' you may pass relaxing nature holidays, enjoy the view of tranquil & grassy areas: In well-preserved wild natural surroundings without too much tourism, Haut-Couserans and especially the village of Ercé are the ideal places for a change of scenery, with all sorts of leisure activities nearby, including visits and cultural ones. Ercé village has a rich history due to its tradition as home of bear tamers, and in the local museum you can see evidence of this. In the 19th century an astonishing number of locals emigrated to the USA, quite a few of them started restaurants in Manhattan... some of them still in existence!
Lots of mountain walks start from the gite and the mountain top is only 9 km away with numerous lakes, wild animals and beautiful wildlife. Our thermal spa : Aulus-Les-Bains is 9 km away (pool, sauna, jacuzzi).
we stayed in this lovely stone cottage for a week. The house itself is lovingly furnished and very neat. The surrounding garden is shaped in terraces, offers sunny and shady places and is lovingly kept. It invites you to spend your time in a lazy manner, but if you like to hike in beautiful landscapes this is also your place. Marie-Noelle, the property owner, has a tip for every weather and every level. We went hiking every day, and every hike was different even though the distance to drive was never more than 20 minutes. Marie-Noelle lives next door and helps you whenever you need it. She knows where to buy the best croissants, delicious cheese and where to eat...
Our vacation was to be a family re-union with individuals coming from England,U.S.A. and Abu Dhabi. We wanted a quiet place from which to hike and we did not want to drive. Marie -Noelle's cottage seemed perfect, a lovely garden where we could enjoy meals together, a near-by grocery store and beautiful countryside to explore.
Marie -Noelle was a very gracious host and made our vacation special. She not only picked us up on arrival in Saint Girons but she drove us to a variety of places to begin our walks. She also took us to local markets and was full of information about the area.
Marie-Noelle's gîte "Le Reflet de la Lune" is a lovely, well-equipped, traditional 2-floor stone cottage located in the heart of Ercé, a picturesque village in the Midi-Pyrénées, about 130 km south of Toulouse. It's ideally located and an idyllic place from where you can explore the magnificent mountains, villages, and towns of the pristine Ariège region.
Throughout our vacation, Marie-Noelle was very hospitable and helpful. She gave us maps of the region and provided us with very useful recommendations. It's mainly thanks to her that we saw breathtakingly beautiful places on our hikes in the mountains. Both her gîte and beautiful garden with three terraces in front of it offer wonderful repose.
The cottage's kitchen is fully equipped. There are beds on each floor and one well-equipped bathroom. There is nothing to bring, linen and towels are provided.
Marie-Noelle's place and the Ariège region are definitely worth more than one visit, and we fully recommend both to all those who enjoy an unforgettable vacation in stunning nature.
A bientôt!
We stayed in this lovely charming cottage for 7 days. We were made extremely welcome by Mairie and nothing was too much trouble. The cottage is very comfortable and caters for every need. The mountains can be viewed from the property and there are lovely walks in the area. We will certainly look forward to returning.
Other Activities: St-Lizier city, grottoes, prehistory park, bear tamers exhibition
