Overview

South Portland Bungalow Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms with clawfoot tub and glass shower, sleeps 4 + dog.

If you can't find the dates you want, try our other two rentals in the same neighborhood! They are also adorable and close to the beaches (listings #3684592 and #3723457). They are new listings and are decorated in the same style as the bungalow!

Beautiful bungalow, lots of skylights, wide pine floors, open floor plan, big stone gas fireplace, Japanese garden, chef's kitchen, washer/ dryer, well stocked and cozy. Why stay at a hotel when you can walk to the beach from this adorable home on a quiet street, two walkable miles from downtown Portland? Pet friendly and easy to rent and access, this home offers the ideal jumping off spot for a perfect Maine vacation. Everyone that walks through the door of this meticulously renovated bungalow falls in love with its charm. There's a hammock and porch swing to lounge in, BBQ, beautiful Japanese Garden and fenced in backyard. There are Skylites throughout the house and lots and lots of windows to throw open for that fresh Maine sea breeze. Home is within walking distance of Portland's best bakery, three local handmade ice cream shops, the area's most dog friendly beach and one of Portland's most popular restaurants. Bring your bikes, you'll be riding all over for the local eats!

Want to bring your baby? Not a problem! We've traveled with ours too and what a nightmare hauling all of that STUFF! We have a pack and play, high chair, toys, etc. Please be aware that the stairs are not baby-friendly and it's very important to know this before arrival (although we've never had any complaints or issues, I just like to be very clear about it).

Kitchen is fully stocked with every kitchen utensil a chef could want, including both a french press and a regular coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, pots for cooking lobster, cocktail bar area, crockpot, etc. If you are curious about something specific, just ask! Home has been thoughtfully furnished with a warm, stylish mix of antiques and more contemporary furniture. The artwork has been thoughtfully placed and the house is stocked with fresh, new bed linens and towels. Please let us know if you are curious about any particular details of the house.

About Maggie Birlem

Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to the little red bungalow! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and the little red bungalow is my version of heaven.

Maggie Birlem purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why Maggie Birlem chose Portland and Casco Bay Area

Why this property? Well, have you ever just walked through a door and thought, can there be a more perfect house than this? I've designed and built many welcoming spaces but this one is my favorite and I will own it for the rest of my life! I LOVE sharing this home with travelers and nothing makes me happier than reading the guest book after you leave! As many guests have commented, it truly is a 'slice of heaven' and while I'm sure I'm biased, the reviews are not! Please come visit!

What makes this bungalow unique

There is a lot that made me fall in love with this house. From walking up the stone walkway out front through the amazing landscaping, to stepping up on the fir wood of the front porch and swinging on the porch swing that my dad made me, to launching myself into the hammock in the front yard, I don't even have to step through the front door to feel like I'm home. I no longer live there but I could never sell this little oasis. Portland is an amazing town to visit and this house is a perfect spot to just setting in to and relax - whether you're looking for some downtime away from your own home or if you're here for a wedding or looking a place to vacation or just want a warm, welcoming, well-designed house to escape to for movie watching, cooking and resting - this is the spot! The clawfoot tub under the skylite helps too :)

Loved our stay at the bungalow!

  • 5 of 5

This bungalow had everything we could have wanted and more! We were especially glad that we could bring our two small dogs with us on vacation. The area has so much to offer within walking distance. We were able to walk to the beach every day. My husband enjoyed walking to The Cookie Jar every morning for some blueberry coffee. There were many wonderful restaurants to choose from depending what we were in the mood for. My husband and I found that there were several craft breweries in the area which were wonderful. I wish I had brought a logo glass from one of our local Indiana breweries to leave at the house for future visitors to enjoy, as well as a Colts bottle opener to leave along side of the Patriot bottle opener already in the drawer!! I really don't think there was anything we lacked. The house is very well stocked with just about everything you could possibly need. Thank you Maggie for sharing your little red bungalow with our family! Loved it!

As Good As It Gets!

  • 5 of 5

Maggie's delightful and cozy bungalow added a great deal to our vacation experience. We couldn't have had better lodging if we had designed it ourselves within walking distance to some great bakeries, eateries and Willard Beach. It was a pleasure to spend time there and we would highly recommend it to any and all looking for a great vacation getaway spot.

Charming

Wonderful and comfortable. This was my third year here. Very cozy and well-equipped house. Great location. Close to lobster roll truck in Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth and close to downtown Portland. Nice porch with swing.

Our favorite place in the world!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth (!) year staying in the little red bungalow. It has truly become our home-away-from-home and this is due not just to how accommodating and accessible and gracious the owners are, but also because the bungalow has everything you could possibly need to enjoy your vacation, and is itself a little piece of paradise. The listing on homeaway doesn't even do the property justice-- it's immaculate, the kitchen is fully-equipped and the beds are super comfortable. Make sure to take advantage of all the walking-distance bakeries and restaurants (the burgers at David's!). We took the ferry to Peak's Island (15 minutes from Portland pier) and rented bikes and had lunch there-- highly recommend!

My family of four and our golden retriever stayed at Margie's delightful

Little red Bungalo last summer. We wanted to write the review this summer as we remember our vacation. It was a fantastic rental can't say enough about Margie and her hospitality and her flexibility if we are ever in the Portland area again we will return.

Beautiful home for a vacation filled with beautiful memories!

  • 4 of 5

Thank you to Maggie and her family for giving us a beautiful temporary home for our vacation in South Portland. The house was exactly what we needed. We looked at many prior to committing, but none really gave us that "home" feeling. As soon as we walked in the door of the red bungalow, we knew it was going to be a great week! Having small children I was nervous that we would be tip toeing around the property, but we didn't feeling that way one bit. The location was a quick 10 minute walk to Willard Beach (our favorite beach that is a secret to most). We went over to Portland one day for shopping in the Old Port and gelato! Mmmm......

We look forward to having this special place a part of our family tradition going forward!

Portland, ME is the perfect destination for an all-around Maine vacation! Just a couple of short, walkable miles into downtown, the house is situated within walking distance of a number of beaches and within a very short drive of some of the larger beaches in southern Maine. Portland won foodiest city last year by Bon Appetit so there is no shortage of amazing restaurants and cafes to enjoy. You can sail, deep sea fish or just take a leisurely ferry ride on the mail boats out of the Old Port. Local attractions include some of Maine's best beaches, amusement parks, outlet shopping in Freeport (including LL Bean) and lots of museums and sightseeing in Portland.

There are many local public golf courses in the area that are beautiful and affordable. Also, take some time to visit the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, which is just one walkable mile from the house. There are too many local ice cream shops, bakeries, breweries, coffee shops, cafe's and wine bars to mention!

There are also quite a few different ski/ snowboard mountains within an easy drive of Portland, as well as numerous groomed cross-country ski areas as well. You can venture out for the day and drive up to Boothbay to see the amazing botanical gardens and walk through the quaint village, or even up to Camden to visit the Farnsworth Museum, which features Andrew Wyeth's original works.

I have quite a few possible day trips and itineraries in a binder at the house. Of course there's also lots of information on the best places to get lobster - don't worry!
