About Miriam Bourin O'Keefe

My name is Miriam, a native Swede, but who lives in the US since 2004. I'm one of those "love captives" who moved to the US after meeting the love of my life... However, I've firmly kept one foot in Europe, more precisely in this exquisite corner of France...

Miriam Bourin O'Keefe purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Miriam Bourin O'Keefe chose Haut Bearn/Soule - Oloron

The Water Mill was discovered by my later husband, Steven, by pure chance in 2000 when he was visiting the village. It was neatly tucked away from the public eye, behind the larger "main" house, not seen from the quiet main road. It had been an active mill, used by the villagers up until the 60's when it fell out of use and was abandoned. It was used mainly to ground the grains for the locals and for other communal uses, which was so common back then.

Steven immediately saw the beauty of the property, bought it from the owner and started by building a floor! The walls and roof were perfect, but that was about it. He continued with landscaping, building the 2nd floor and in 2005, we built the guest house together, expanding the use of the Water Mill. This year we also started to rent it out in a more organized fashion.

It's a very romantic and unique property and holds a very dear place in my heart since it was the very first place Steven brought me to after we met in Spain back in 2003, and this is where we fell in love... It was a very clever move - as you will discover once you visit The Water Mill and see for yourself.

Steven passed away in 2010, and I maintain the mill in the same romantic ambience as it's intended to have, only adding updates and conveniences where needed to adapt to our modern lifestyle.

What makes this cottage unique

Since this is a Water Mill, it also has a canal and a pond. The water from the canal runs under the house and Steven loved that water! Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and his amazing house "Falling Water" where he built a natural "air conditioner" based on falling water, Steven used the waterfall under the house for the same purpose. This way, the house stays cool during the hot Summer months and also adds a tranquil sound of running water to the scenery. You can also see the water falling from inside through the big double windows. It's quite spectacular!

A little paradise in the mountains.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely place, very good setting. About half an hour you get the Pyrenées or in an hour you stay in Biarritz (Atlantic Coast). I spent one week in early April with my husband and two children ( 6 and 8 years) , both swimmed at the pond all the time if the sun shined in the sky. And it's possible practising fishing (no killed) in the pond.

Romantic and charming get-away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our honeymoon (2 weeks) in the Watermill and we couldn't have found a better and more romantic setting.

All the furniture was very comfortable (far more superior than most french rentals!) and fitted the environment well. We had plenty of candlelight "al fresco" dining on the patio overlooking the pond.

Very well-eqipped kitchen and absolutely no problems with any of the appliances.

Extra-plus for the large flatscreen-TV (so my husband could watch sports!).

Owners easy to communicate with, good cleaning and overall a great place.

Nice house, tired furnishings

  • 4 of 5

This is a charming little house in a lovely setting. The stream runs right under the house, with a window in the kitchen to show it off. The pond is a great feature, but too cold for all but the thickest skinned. The outdoor table is great, and nice loungers by the pond. The kitchen is well-equipped, but the microwave/cooker wasn't working, so you have to be creative on the hob and BBQ. The interior has been lovingly decorated, but the furnishings feel a little old and tired, with springs sprung in the two armchairs and thin pillows. It was very charming, but a little expensive for what it was.
