Great views, spacious, could use some fixes

  • 4 of 5

We were pleasantly surprised by the incredibly beautiful views offered by this suite. The owner - Denise, was very nice, and as other reviewers mentioned, she left chocolates and macadamia nuts for us to enjoy, as well as beach towels, beach chairs, a beach umbrella, and a boogy board. The unit was more spacious then the pictures suggest, and it was great to have a full kitchen. We never used the air conditioning in February, as the cross breezes were amazing. Flat screen t.v.s in both rooms and wifi were much appreciated. My only critical feedback is that there are a few things that have 'worn out' in the unit that could use replacing .... Small things that would make a better impression (e.g., one of the lanai chairs was broken, the lanai table rusted and flaking, the pull out bed was broken, the screens on the Windows put up with tape, the shower glass insert doesn't fit, necessitating also the use of a show curtain which awkwardly covers the glass).... All changes that would make it more esthetically pleasing.

Comfortable and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

This is the first VBRO that we stayed at. I was hesitant at first but Denise made everything very easy. The apartment was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and the full kitchen was a blessing. The location is a 20 min walk to the beach and downtown, and a 10 min walk to a park which was great for my toddler. The A/C works great in the bedroom, though often not needed with the ceiling fans and trade winds. We were pleasantly surprised to find boogey boards and sand toys available to use, it made play time at the beach that much more exciting. I definitely would stay here again.

Great location and clean condo

  • 5 of 5

This condo was right in the middle of the area we wanted to be. My daughter found the couch comfortable enough that we didn't pull out the bed. The bed in the bedroom was very comfortable. Denise is very nice and we had no problems at all with booking this trip. We would gladly stay again.

Mixed emotions

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Oahu and this condo was an adequate and reasonably priced home base. We found Kailua to be a good location, a half hour from Honolulu, with lots of interesting sights along the North Shore of the island. A trip to the Makapu’u point in the south is well worth a few hours – less crowded beaches and some great vistas of the ocean and mountains. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a must-see; it was the highlight of our entire trip!

The condo was not overly expensive but we ended up wishing we would had paid a bit more for a fully air-conditioned unit.

The second floor was not an issue. The stairs were not steep and being higher meant a better view of the surrounding hills and better breezes. (The view, however, is obscured somewhat by heavy electric wires.)

The lanai is cute and the condo is roomy and nicely decorated. All necessary pots and pans, kitchenware and such are there (and we’ve been in vacation rentals where such items were sparse). It would have been a delightful home away from home if not for the lack of AC (except in the bedroom) combined with the road noise.

When we arrived the condo was stuffy but the AC in the bedroom quickly cooled down that room. The open windows and ceiling fans were adequate to keep the rest of the condo tolerable–not pleasant but tolerable. (And we live in Florida, so it’s not like we aren’t used to heat and humidity.)

Unfortunately, the property is right next to a road and something about the acoustics of the valley exaggerates the sounds from the cars. There is a loud whooshing noise every time one passes by, which is frequent since this is a heavily traveled road. In the bedroom, the noise was barely noticeable with the windows closed, but in the rest of the condo, because the windows had to be open, the noise was a constant annoyance.

The solution to both issues would be the installation of a second AC unit in the living room. This would make the condo a truly great place to stay (and worth a few extra dollars to cover the cost of electricity for that 2nd AC unit). As it is, I wouldn’t call this place “heavenly” unless heaven is very noisy and a lot hotter than I’ve always imagined it would be.

Owner's Response: Aloha Kathleen, Thank you for your review. Hawaii is known for its warm, , balmy weather with breezy trade winds. Unfortunately, with the numerous hurricanes in the vicinity they virtually cut off all tradewind flows. It has been the hottest/muggiest August and September on record for the state. Kailua is an older, small , quaint beach town with many homes, like ours, in residential areas on feeder roads with a speed limit of 25 mph and 95% have above ground utilities. There is traffic predominately during commute times. The site does state there is only the 1 air conditioner in the bedroom. With hat saiid, I wish you would have voiced your concern to me while you were here. I would have advised you that if you close all the windows in the unit the air conditioner, even though it is in the bedroom, will cool the entire unit. This would have also addressed your noise concern. I'm sorry you were disappointed, however, we do have many happy, satisfied guests who look forward to a return stay. More importantly, we have guests that have stayed multiple times and love it!! Much Alloha, Heavenly Haven

Great location. Very clean.

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I were here for a wedding and the unit location was perfect for that. Close to Kailua Town to organize flowers and catering but also within walking distance of the beach for relaxation. Access to the major highways was also very good for getting around Oahu. We appreciated the beach umbrella and chairs as we were not able to bring our own. The unit was very clean and we had no problems with anything. Overall very highly recommended.

A great home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with our two kids ages 7 and 1, on a combo family visit/vacation. We loved the area and the kitchen had everything we needed and was nice to have with the little ones. It was close enough to everything we wanted to do but more importantly, it was close for us to visit the family we went to see. There is some street traffic noise that begins early in the morning around 7 which I would expect from a neighborhood that is predominantly local people who are probably starting a morning commute around that time. Also, the busses run early which accounts for some of the noise. It was not enough to bother my family and I'm certain that noise around touristy Waikiki would be much worse. The bed was comfy and my daughter had no problems sleeping on the couch (which is a pull-out but we never bothered). We were provided a pack and play for the baby. Baby-proofing was quick and easy. We are a young fit family, but there are stairs to the unit which might be a problem for someone with mobility problems. There were a few beach toys, masks, boogie boards, and beach towels that we used throughout our stay. Kailua beach is a short drive away, and there are plenty of grocery stores and other shopping nearby. Overall our stay was nearly perfect. It was mere bad luck that the house next door was having construction during our stay but they were nearly complete by the day of check out and weren't too bothersome as we were usually gone while they were working during the day. For those not familiar with Hawaii, A/C is rare but was a must for my husband. If you are looking into a vacation rental, be sure that it has one available if you are used to it. My husband was happy to have the one in the bedroom, especially after visiting family and seeing what it was like not to have A/C. Also, anywhere you stay in Hawaii, you remove your shoes at the door and make sure you don't leave out any food! Ants will find anything left out (this had to be explained to my 7 year old). All in all, my family felt at home in this rental and would love to stay again the next time we visit. I would HIGHLY recommend staying here, especially over the hustle and bustle hotels of Waikiki.
