Overview

About the property

2 bedroom, 1 bath, sleeps 4

The Down Home Beach Cottage was completely restored/ renovated in 2008-2010. It is located in the old San Jacinto Conservation District, which is on the gulf side of Galveston's famous historic east end. This area was destroyed during the Geat Storm of 1900, and was rebuilt after the hurricane as a neighborhood of 'worker's cottages' to house those working to rebuild the city. You can still get a feeling from the scale and character of the architecture of this neighborhood what it may have been like over 100 years ago. The San Jacinto Conservation District is a neighborhood in transition. This neighborhood has a 'beach bohemian' feel that exudes a more laid back and slower paced existence- even by Galveston standards! Be prepared for quaint cottage, 'funky beachtown' meets down home Galveston!

The cottage is approximately 1,000 square feet with 2 bedrooms and one bath. During the restoration, layers of materials and additions that were installed over the years had to be literally peeled back to reveal the homes original personality. Original cypress siding, windows, interior doors, and heart pine floors were salvaged, while the kitchen and bath were given substantial updates. The goal of the remodel was to retain as much of the period style and scale as possible, in playing up the charm and coziness of the home. The kitchen is 'cook friendly' in that it is well equipped, with everything at your finger tips. The cottage has a homey, cozy feel; and is tastefully furnished with a collection of flea market, thrift store, and antique shop finds. For ultimate comfort, several new items were brought in.

The garden is planted with a mix of perennials, herbs, and tropicals. Sip your morning coffee while rocking away on the front porch. Private back patio is the ideal setting for bar-b-ques or R & R.

The Down Home Beach Cottage is perfectly located for your Galveston stay. It will easily accomodate groups of up to 4 who are wanting to experience what Island visitors affectionatly call 'The Causeway Effect' !

history & charm at its finest

  • 5 of 5

This is an excellent choice for a Galveston getaway! Its location is superb - situated between the Strand and the beach and a few blocks east of the most crowded part of the island. We walked to the beach, just a couple blocks. Easy drive to Pleasure Pier for the rides or the Strand for more upscale restaurants. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable and the kitchen was outfitted nicely. Plenty of room in the living room and dining room for groups, plus a lush back patio and grill. Thank you for a wonderfully decorated house that helped make our stay unforgettable!

Step back in time a bit but want nothing

  • 5 of 5

Quaint well equipped and spotlessly clean. Just the reason I chose our second property with the same owners. We took evening walks on the seawall and drove to the strand with parking around 3 dollars. We picked up Marios Pizza on way in and walked to Benno's on the beach one night. Coffee in the rocking chairs on the front porch was awesome. The beds were comfy, the AC cold, and there was a good selection of movies and books. I love looking through the local history books and the architectural books just validate the thought that goes into these houses. The back courtyard was full of butterflies and birds with very vocal squirrels in the front trees. You know you're on island but the shade in this yard is great. The fresh plants continue on the inside. The peace and quiet was needed so having one tv worked. We appreciate the opportunity to bring our fur baby who was right at home (she is a seasoned traveler). The small picket fence around the front was a nice add. I appreciated the fence ten fold after gazing through the Fences book on the book shelf.

We really enjoyed our stay at this house in Galveston. The access was easy and the house had everything we needed for our weekend away from home! We were so glad that we could bring our little dog as she is part of the family! The owners were responsive to our needs and that really hepled. We would definitely stay here again if we need to!
