Classic 200 year old Tuscan Olive Mill completely renovated in 2015

Stylish and chic, this 200 year old converted olive mill is privately situated on an idyllic 9 acre working olive estate with 540 olive trees and a recently established vineyard with 500 vines planted in 2015. Until the late 1960's the Frantoio pressed the olives from the surrounding estate employing many local villagers. For decades after it closed, the olives groves lay untended and the building became a ruin. The building was initially renovated into 4 luxury apartments and after an extensive renovation in 2015 has now been converted into one luxurious house which can only be rented by one group of up to a maximum of 12 people at any one time. The estate has gradually and carefully been brought back to life, the olive groves which are organic once again produce Compitese olio d'oliva - one of the finest extra virgin olive oils in Italy which you can taste during your stay with us. The Frantoio has been painstakingly renovated to a very high standard and is now a most charming, warm and welcoming home with many original features. Great luxury villa with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

As a group of 5 couples with 5 young babies under 2 years old, we were looking for a place where we would be happy to spend the whole week without really leaving the villa, and we certainly found that at the Frantoio.

For any other groups crazy enough to travel with 5 babies, it's worth noting that the main 5 bedrooms were all large enough to fit a travel cot (in fact three of the rooms are suites with a side room that can fit a travel cot) and there were also five bathtubs. Linda and George (the caretakers) were also kind enough to organise for 5 high chairs to be made available. The villa has a rather unique design where all the bedrooms are quite separate, which was also good for noise isolation in light of the babies.

The quality of the furnishings in the villa is all very high. The bathrooms have nice fixtures and the appliances in the kitchen and laundry are all Miele. The kitchen is well stocked in crockery, glasses, pots and pans and utensils, as well as in general cupboard essentials (e.g. olive oil, salt, pepper, dried herbs) so is well set up for cooking. The indoor and outdoor seating furniture is of high quality, as are the pool loungers. There is air conditioning in all the bedrooms (but not the shared areas). There is wifi available which works as well as can be expected given the villa is in rural Tuscany, though it is worth noting that the wifi does not reach the pool area.

Linda and George were extremely responsive in answering questions we had ahead of our stay and checked in pretty much every day while we were there to ask if they could help in any way. They were kind enough to organise caterers to come in for a few of the nights to cook for us (Valentino and his wife Larissa one night, and Chef Danielo another night) which we would highly recommend. They live on the property but in a separate house a bit higher up from the pool.

Before arriving, we were a little concerned that the pool was too far away from the villa, but this was not an issue. Although it does mean that the pool becomes a bit of a separate area from the villa (you cannot see the pool from the villa and although it is only a very short walk away, it is uphill and we would generally pack a bag before going with all the provisions we needed for the day as it is just far enough to discourage you popping back and forth constantly), the incredible view of Tuscany gained from the pool being on higher ground definitely outweighs the negatives.

Absolutely amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

I don't know quite where to begin. What a holiday! The villa is absolutely fantastic - a wonderful location with breathtaking views, impeccably fitted out and hugely impressive communal areas. The photos are good but don't do it justice. It's the nicest place we have stayed. We were a party of 11 (4 adults, 7 kids from 18 months upwards) and every single one of us had an amazing holiday. In addition, Linda and George were amazingly helpful and accommodating with lots of friendly suggestions. None of us could find anything at all that wasn't amazing about our week - maybe having to leave!

Absolutely exceeded our expectations! Perfect in every way.

  • 5 of 5

Linda and George were there to meet us and the house was immaculate. They patiently showed us around as we tried to work out which room everyone would stay in. It really wasn't difficult as every room was beautiful, had air conditioning and extremely comfortable beds. The kitchen is very well stocked and we loved the top of the range machines including good coffee machine, fridges, ovens which looked like they had never been used, hob and gas BBQ. The pool is up some quiet steep steps above the house and it was beautifully clean and very refreshing as we had extremely hot weather. You are right up on a high hillside with tremendous views and an exciting steep driveway to get there. We all LOVED our stay. Linda and George were brilliant at recommending and booking local restaurants for us and we really hope to return one day. Thank you.

Renting Bliss in Italy!

  • 5 of 5

What a find! After 2 weeks of touring in the UK and FR, we were ready for some R & R. This home over delivered our expectations 10 fold! We knew we were in for a treat as the pictures of the home on VRBO were stunning, but the property in real life was absolutely incredible. Situated about 20 minutes from Lucca and Pisa, 45 minutes from Florence, 80 minutes from the Cinque Terre, and wine country only a few minutes away, the property couldn't have been more centrally located. All the rooms furnishings, linens, etc. were top of the line. And, the main kitchen was outfitted for professional chefs which the property managers George and Linda helped us find. Best Italian food we have had in our lives...and the costs were reasonable considering chefs were preparing your dinner at your home. Also, our children have severe food allergies to all nuts, dairy, and eggs, and the chefs were meticulous in their preparation to avoid any allergic reactions, and give our kids the true Italian food experience without compromise - a true blessing for us! The pool was a showstopper for the kids and adults. Sitting on a bluff, the pool overlooks the entire valley, along with 550+ olive trees located within the home property lines. The grounds surrounding the home were expertly manicured. The patios provided some of the most amazing sunsets we have seen in our lives, and were a great resting retreat with a glass of wine at the end of a terrific day. George and Linda, the property managers, are real professionals. Friendly, courteous, always willing to help with touring recommendations, first class folks. This is a must rent if you are looking for luxury that has it all. Speaking on behalf of our family, we plan to return to IT, and enjoy a tremendous week again at The Frantoio again!

Loved everything about the Frantoio!

  • 5 of 5

I am a person of few words so this review will be short and sweet. My family and I had an absolutely perfect stay at the Frantoio. The house and grounds exceeded all of our expectations, everything was top notch. My granddaughters especially enjoyed their twice daily swim in the beautiful pool. Linda and George were wonderful hosts, available if needed but not obtrusive in any way. I would go back again in a heart beat. We all would. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely home.

A truly fantastic stay

  • 5 of 5

The Frantoio is an amazing place, even better than the photos suggest. From the beautiful views from the terrace and the swimming pool to the extremely well appointed and luxurious rooms, everything makes you feel like you have found a gem.

Linda and George are incredibly lovely hosts who really make sure that the guests feel welcome.

There were 11 of us in the house and we all agreed that this was one of the best holidays we ever had. In fact the only down side was that we were so comfortable and happy in the house that we were reluctant to leave even to visit the surrounding towns, although I know from previous visits that they are worth tearing yourself away from the pool for a few hours.

The surrounding countryside and villages are very traditional, life around here is lead at a slower pace with time to stop and chat at a local bar or do some daily shopping at one of the many local markets. Stay here and you will experience the real Tuscany, a bit off the tourist track but yet close enough to Lucca, Florence and Pisa.

One of the most popular modes of transport in our area is the three wheeler Ape or Piaggio, normally laden with vegetables or olives. The restaurants all within 15 minutes drive offer good food and value, frequented by local people they range from more simple Pizzerias and Trattorias to very good gourmet Restaurants.

Montecarlo our nearest wine town (8k) is a medieval hill village surrounded by vineyards, many of which offer wine tastings. There are a number of good restaurants in town where you can enjoy a lunch and glass or two of local wine or an evening meal after afternoon of wine tasting.

Lucca is only 15 to 20 minutes by car. One of the most beautiful Tuscan towns with fine architecture, the 4km of well preserved walls surround a medieval centre with a labyrinth of interesting streets to explore, Romanesque churches, museums and piazzas lined with cafes to watch the world go by. There is only limited residential car access within the walls which helps to create a nice relaxed atmosphere for walking or cycling. Music festivals, great variety of shops, excellent cafes and restaurants, hire a bicycle for a few hours and cycle round the wide tree road round the boundary walls joining the people of Lucca in their daily exercise.

Castelvecchio di Compito - our local village with a bar and pizzeria/trattoria. There is a little farm with a small shop where they make fresh ricotta and pecorino.

Bientina - local town (5-10 mins) with supermarket, olympic outdoor pool, tennis courts, cycle hire, range of shops, cafes, trattorias, hairdressers, banks, weekly market (Tue) and a Palio is held each July.

Buti - local village (5-10 mins)with restaurants, bars and local shops. Palio in January.

Orentano - little hamlet (5 mins) with 2 good trattoria/pizzerias and a few shops. Pizza festival in summer months.

San Leonardo in Treponzio - town (10-15 mins) with supermarket, restaurant, bank, pizzeria, pharmacy and hairdressers.

The Frantoio is ideally situated for all the major sightseeing areas in Tuscany. Within 1 hour you can reach Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Garfagnana, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montetcatini and Montesumano Terme, Forte di Marmi, Viareggio, Livorno and the Tuscan Coast. Within 2 hours you can reach Siena, Arezzo, The Cinque Terre, the Val D'Orcia whose landscape has been chosen for many films including Gladiator and the English Patient with the famous Brunello wine town of Montalcino and Pienza voted one of the most beautiful towns in Italy and famous for Pecorino cheese. The Mountain region of the Garfagnana covered in chestnut forests and renowned for local produce, Chianti and the rolling hills with vineyards and quaint medieval towns of Greve, Radda and Castellina in Chianti.

Various local trails for hill walking and mountain biking. Buti has a grade 4 via Ferrata and for more climbing or challenging mountain walks, canyoning, horse riding and climbing in the outdoor adventure sports area of the Garfagnana and the Apennine Mountains.

Nearby there are two outdoor olympic swimming pools with lanes, communal gymnasium, tennis courts and freshwater lake with sandy beach, WWF nature reserve for birdwatching.

Many good local restaurants in the area from simple trattorias and pizzerias to fine dining and michelin starred. We can help with recommendations and reservations.

Olive harvesting in October/November, we produce our own olive oil.
