About Cindy Thornsvard

In 1999, we purchased an RV in the RV park in Kitty Hawk. At the time we lived in Richmond, VA & enjoyed spending weekends at the Outer Banks. As our family grew with marriages & the birth of grandchildren we needed a larger place for everyone to visit. In 2006, we purchased a lot in Nags Head and built our second home. In the spring of 2007, we took occupancy of our new home. It became our families' favorite place to spend holidays & the summer! In 2011, we sold our home in Northern VA and moved to Nags Head and became permanent residents. Living near the ocean is such a blessing. We work from our home office with a spectacular view. Life is good!!

Cindy Thornsvard purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Cindy Thornsvard chose Outer Banks

I was contacted by a friend/realtor when this property went on the market to be sold. She knew of my love of decorating. She thought this was a project "right up my alley". My husband & I went to take of look at the cottage. I must admit that we were intrigued with the lot as it is larger than most others. The cottage was built in 1953 as a "fair weather" cottage primarily for fishermen.

Most realtors that had viewed the property thought is was deplorable & in need to demolition. As one realtor put it..."it's nothing but a tear down"!

I, on the other hand, walked through the front door and had a vision. Even though it was in need of repair & renovation I saw great potential. It was in pretty bad shape & needed some tender loving care.

The trend in vacation homes on the Outer Banks was to build them bigger & bigger. I felt as though there was a "niche market" for those looking for smaller cottages. It's rare to find a 2 bedroom cottage near the ocean.

We began renovation & remolding in the fall. My 1st renters arrived in the spring of 2012. I am very fortunate to welcome wonderful guests to The Tale of a Mermaid season after season.

What makes this cottage unique

My cottage is truly a little gem. It's cozy & comfortable. I take great pride in providing my guests with clean & well-appointed accommodations. The cottage is conveniently located in the town of Nags Head near restaurants, shops, grocery stores, recreation & entertainment.

The cottage has comfortable outdoor spaces to include the front porch with built-in benches, back deck to enjoy the afternoon sunshine & a screened porch to enjoy coffee and/or cocktails.

**the cottage is pet free & smoke free**

The cottage was great! Everything was very comfortable and tidy, it was in a perfect location close to everything we wanted to do. Having the washer and dryer was a nice bonus! We will definitely be returning for another stay!

Weekend get away

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a wonderful 3 day weekend at Tale of a Mermaid. Loved the house and location. Contacted by the owner while there letting us know that the house was not being rented the day we were leaving and that we did not have to rush or worry about the check out time . I thought that was a very nice touch we would definitely rent this property again.

ever so delightful

We couldn't have been happier with this cottage. Perfect location, near all our favorite things like Tortugas Lie restaurant, our first-night go-to restaurant, or the easy access to the beach from multiple accesses with parking and porta potties. Near the excellent Kill Devil Grille, too. Only a few miles from the Tanger Outlets, and near the Seagreen Gallery, a unique gallery specializing in repurposed beach materials. Close to a lot of other shopping options and restaurants. The cottage itself was wonderful. Our hostess really did a great job with updating what had been a pretty basic cottage, at least based on the pictures in the album provided. Everything was very clean, a very important element to us. The cottage was pretty, well-appointed, comfortable. We were encouraged to contact Cindy if anything needed repair, for example, a light was burned out at the backdoor and she came and replaced it. It's small but perfect for two people. Just what we look for in a cottage. Even a small stool was provided to stand on to reach the charming bowl sink in the bathroom. An outdoor shower made cleaning up from the beach easy. The screened porch is nicely located as to catch the sea breezes and made a great place for late afternoon cocktails. We like to eat some meals in and the kitchen provided all that we needed to do that. Wifi is provided, also a must for us, and a very nice TV that was easy to use came with the place. We were super pleased. Absolutely no complaints! Highly recommend this place. We shall return! Thanks, Cindy!

Beautiful Home

  • 4 of 5

The decor was beautiful! We loved hanging out on the screened in porch and watching people go by and listening to the ocean. The beds are full size beds which take some getting use to for two adults. We enjoyed our stay and would rent again.

Very homey, clean beach house!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we saw the house it was perfect! It is in a great location and super easy to get to! It is really close to one of the nicest and cleanest beaches I have been to, it is also really close to come great local restaurants! The house itself was spotless and so cute! My husband and I and our 2 friends fit perfectly in the home without being on top of each other! Cindy was so wonderful about asking if we needed anything and being a great host! This is somewhere I know I will stay again! I'm already planning my next trip! Thank you so much for the amazing stay! ❤️❤️
