MENEHUNE [meh-neh-HOO-neh]-- Hawaii’s legendary mystical and shy forest dwellers are small in size at about two feet high, although some are only six inches high. They live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. According to legend they are very industrious master builders that use their great strength to accomplish mighty feats of engineering and construction overnight.
In that spirit, we welcome you to 'MENEHUNE MANSIONS'... which to the UNMYSTICAL HUMAN, would appear to be A VERY SWEET FOREST COTTAGE.
Minutes to Hawaii Volcano National Park and tucked away in the uniquely beautiful forest of desirable Volcano Village.... you will come home to a tropical, clean, fresh, warm and cozy hideaway... for a menehune mystical price
We have so enjoyed our second home and very well received vacation rental Maile Treehouse which is also in Volcano Village.
We thought we would like to offer a more budgeted alternative but with an upscale experience... It has been a true delight to help make a vacation special for people... we hope we can do that for even more travelers now....

Oh... My... Gosh! What a lovely place. Everything was perfect. We really enjoyed our stay here. So quiet and homey. The binder you've made was great, so much time was put into it, and it was very helpful. So close to the park and a short drive
to Hilo. Our original honeymoon was cancelled because of hurricane Sandy- it was a blessing in disguise as we would have never gotten to experience this 'home away from home'.

How do I describe this cottage in the rainforest? One word "wow!" We had a wonderful stay here! The little touches you have put into the place are awesome! Love the owl in the tree, all the little notes around, the decor is beautiful and the visitor
book was so helpful! We loved visiting the park w/ the hot spring pool of water. We would recommend this cottage to all our friends and we hope to return in the future! We had a very relaxing stay and wish we could stay forever! ps the bed was

We really enjoyed staying here! The place was very comfortable and had basically everything you could need, including kitchen and clothes washer and dryer. It was very clean and well-maintained as well. We never saw or directly interacted with the property owner, but the directions to the place and instructions for using it were easy to follow and very clear.
The location is really great, too. It is less than a 10 minute drive to the main park entrance, so if you are doing a lot of things there, this place will work well for you. There are not a lot of restaurants in the area, but let's face it - if you come to this area of Hawaii, you are not doing it for the restaurants. That being said, we enjoyed the Thai Thai restaurant, and had a fun, tasty breakfast at the Lava Rock Cafe, both in Volcano.
If you are wanting a nice, private house to stay in close to the park, I'd definitely recommend you consider staying here!
What a jewel this lil place is. So glad to have found it -- very clean and nicely appointed! Leslie was a dream to work with and all the information provided in the binder was very useful. The propane stove, which had just been serviced, wasn't working and I received several apologetic texts from Leslie to this effect prior to our arrival and, in lieu of the stove, she offered us the use of the washer and dryer even though we were only there for the 1 night (washer and dryer offered for stays of over 3 das). Even though we didn't need the w/d, we were very appreciative of her efforts to compensate for the non-working stove. The cabin is furnished darling and was extremely clean and well organized. We truly loved staying here. It is definitely off the beaten path but very close to Volcano Nat'l Park. We found the place during the daytime but had a bit of a problem re-finding it at night after dinner (and a cple of cocktails), so definitely get your bearings to it in the daytime. Leslie's recommendations for nearby eateries was right on! We had dinner at the Kailua Lodge and enjoyed it immensely and then b'fast the next day at the Lava Rock cafe which was also delicious. It is quiet and we found it to be very restful. The description of neighbor Clifford was cute and we even saw him on the day we were leaving! Thanks so much Leslie and Michael -- we hope to return someday, this time for even a longer stay! Mahalo! Nancy and Bruce
My family and I stayed for 2 nights in the Mahana and 1 night in the Hune. The location is perfect for spending time exploring the Volcanoes National Park, and so peaceful and quiet, especially after the relative mayhem of Waikiki! The 3 nights we had at Volcano were the best nights' sleep I had on our entire holiday!
I must admit that when I read one of the reviews that mentioned difficulty in finding the cottages at night, I was a bit worried, especially as we were planning on being out at night. However, Leslie's detailed directions to the cottages, along with the GPS that was included in our car rental, and the various pointers that we identified at driveway entrances along the way (surfboard, yellow sign, reflective tape on trees, Leslie's big red flower, etc) made it a cinch to find them, especially as you have to travel so slowly along the quaint narrow country lanes (which I absolutely loved). You just have to be careful not to flatten one of the neighbourhood cats as they tend to dart across the road at night! The cottages are obviously lovingly cared for by Leslie, and I appreciated the little reminders / notes she has around the place, especially the check-out list by the door, as I'm prone to being rather forgetful. The cottages were very clean and well looked after and provided us with all we needed for a comfy stay. Internet access was a little hit and miss (which my 15 y/o Facebook-obsessed daughter had a grumble about it) but it was always available when I needed it, so no complaints from me on that front. I can't comment on the local cafes / restaurants as we were always back at Volcano too late at night to visit them.
I would certainly recommend this accommodation to friends or relatives.
Thank you so much Leslie for allowing us to stay in your gorgeous cottages.
This was the perfect size for me, my wife and two kids. We got to see the volcano and get back to eat and clean up so quickly. The house is clean and cozy, the perfect rental if you're in the volcano area.
We had a great time in the cottage. Great base for the volcano drives and hikes. The magical Menehune messed a bit with the Internet connection, though nothing serious.:p
Menehune Mansions is in beautiful Volcano Village - 1 mile to the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and 26miles from Hilo and Hilo International Airport!
