About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5+ Baths, remodeled kitchen (Sleeps up to six)

Big Bear Lodge and Resort is minutes from the Parkway but built on a quiet peaceful bluff overlooking Pigeon Forge. Our 1,500 square foot duplex cabin is a great Smoky Mountain getaway not far from a variety of attractions including: the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Dollywood Theme Park, the Titanic exhibit and the new Carl Ripkin Experince . Also choose activities from white water rafting to a Zipline adventure. Step out nearby to a large selection of restaurants, outlet shopping malls including “5 Oaks”; a huge mall with 100’s of stores only minutes from the cabin. We are also just a half mile from the Wear Farm City Park. At the park with be baseball/softball fields, playground and walkway. Many softball tournaments are schedule for the park. You can walk from the cabin to the park if you desire.

In January 2016, we completed major improvements to Bears’ Retreat. This included: new leather sleeper sofa and side chair in the living room and as well as a leather love seat in the loft. In addition the kitchen was updated with granite counter tops and a new sink, faucet and disposal. New bedding was added to both beds and sleeper sofas and an elegant duvet was added in the master bedroom. We also switched cleaning companies and now work with one person who only cleans a few highly rated cabins in Pigeon Forge.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find three levels that are more like home than anyplace you’ve ever stayed: the main level, the second floor and the lower level walkout apartment or Studio Suite. On each level, we’ve added decorating touches throughout that you rarely find in any other vacation property. As an example, we’ve included classic fine art prints and local artist renditions of this beautiful location. We’ve also added lots of pillows, stuffed bears, and cozy throws. This cabin also features hardwood floors and leather furniture. Parking is available on both the main and lower levels of the cabin.

On the main level, relax near the huge stone fireplace with its nearby large flat screen TV housed in an armoire. For larger groups, the leather couch makes into a queen size bed. In the full kitchen, you’ll find everything you need to prepare a delicious home cooked meal, or you may opt to grill something on the large lower-level Studio Suite deck. Either way, you’ll be able to recharge your energies and enjoy being in the uniquely beautiful area of East Tennessee.

Just off the kitchen, you can enjoy a four person hot tub set in a large screened in porch. Enjoy the night air wafting through the screens while relaxing in the hot soothing water. A large half bathroom, along with a full size washer and dryer, is also located on this level.

On the second level, at the top of the stairs you will find a loft sitting area just outside the private master bedroom suite. This vaulted space overlooks the main floor and includes a love seat. You’ll also find a large computer desk, books, reference materials, excellent lighting and a CD player.

Pass through the loft and you’ll be amazed at the size of the master bedroom suite with full bathroom and balcony. Each day you can view the beautiful Smoky Mountains from this suite. This balcony is perfect location for your morning coffee. The king size bed has multiple pillows, a coverlet and many throws should you need them. Relax with your own media choices by taking advantage of your own TV/DVD in this suite. Large chests of drawers are available for all your belongings.

The lower level Studio Suite is a separate apartment that is ideal when a larger group of travelers chooses Bears Retreat. This living space is perfect for another couple or children and comes equipped with a kitchenette that includes a microwave, coffee maker, sink and mini refrigerator. A recently added Foosball table means fun for all! This level is accessed by a convenient stairway to the main living area and, if desired, a private outdoor entrance. This Studio Suite also opens to a large deck with gas grill and hi-top seating for four. You and your family or friends will love the extra space and tasteful décor of this Studio Suite that includes pictures and paintings of Smoky Mountain areas such as Cades Cove.

In this second living area, you’ll find another large stone gas fireplace. You can relax with a flat screen TV above the mantel. The burgundy leather couch opens into a queen size bed. Amenities include a full-size bathroom with shower and a soaking tub! The private bedroom in this suite includes a TV and CD player.

About Robert Thelen

We (Jan and Bob Thelen) are from Lansing Michigan have been visiting the Smoky Mountains the past 30+ years.

Robert Thelen purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Robert Thelen chose Pigeon Forge

After visiting the area on many occasions we had an opportunity to purchase our duplex cabin. After looking at many cabins we felt Big Bear Lodge had the amenities we desired—close to all activities but still quite and peaceful. We purchased in 2002 when the resort was being developed. For eight years we worked with various rental management companies and were never satisfied with the services they provided. In February, 2012 we decided to rent through VRBO and HomeAway so we could have more control over the rental process and provide a better experience for our guest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our stay at your cabin. The Foosball table was a big hit and we loved coming back from our outings and relaxing in the hot tub. We would love to stay here on future trips to Tennessee as well.

Wonderful, large cabin! Very convenient to the action.

  • 5 of 5

We loved that the cabin had three floors. The kids absolutely loved having their own apartment in the basement. Honestly, mom and dad loved it just as much. We had a blast swimming in the resort pool. We made a lot of memories, including our middle child learning to swim. We will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Hi Lori, thanks for your review. Most guests love the three different levels. As you said, great for kids or if you are traveling with another couple. Glad you enjoyed the pool. Living in Michigan where we have many lakes, I know the importance of learning how to swim. Have a great summer--hope to see you back at Bears Retreat! Bob Thelen

Amazing stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I love staying at Bears Retreat! This was our second stay at the cabins and it was just as amazing as the first time! We enjoyed an awesome hike at Cades Cove the Rich Mountain Trail! We chose the trail out of the guide books Bob and Jan provide at the cabin! It was a great choice as we weren’t looking for anything too hard and would be a perfect hike for a family! We even encountered bears along the trail which was exciting and scary but we left them alone and they left us alone! We also ate at Paula Deens restaurant which we had been dreaming about for two years! It’s amazing and worth the wait! We also enjoyed a restaurant called Mamas similar set up with the family style dining but the wait isn’t as long and the food is delicious! I enjoyed shopping at tanger outlets because who doesn’t love a good deal! Thank you again Bob and Jan! We can’t wait to make a third visit!

You covered all the reason folks love the Pigeon Forge area--hiking in the mountains, Cades Cove, shopping at Tanger Outlet Mall and great restaurants at the Island in Pigeon Forge. With AC not working night were sweaty

  • 2 of 5

The day we arrived we got message that A.C. is not working and were given an option to move out with full refund. Last minute all was expensive so decided to continue our stay in the cabin. Our kids would get up frequently at night due to hot temp in the house. If winter had arrived on time we could have liked to stay without A.C. The king size bed is very noisy. So our night were sleeples for the two reasons.

Owner's Response: Wow, did this come as a surprise. I was informed before this guest arrival that the AC was not working effectively. Before their arrival, I called this guest and offered them a full refunded or $100.00 off each night of there stay. I also provided ideas on where they could stay. They chose $100.00 off per night. The AC company indicated that they could repair the unit but it would take about a week for a new coil to arrive or they could replaced the unit, which would cost twice as much as the repair but it could be done immediately. So these guest would have air, I chose to install a new unit! I should also mention that the lower level has its own AC unit. So this guest received $100 off per night and were without air for one night in the upper bedroom. We try to do preventive maintenance so there are no emergencies; however, when there is an incident that inconveniences a guest, I always go out of my way to provide appropriate compensation. We have slept on the bed over 100 times and have never heard any noise. Will check again when we are at the cabin next week. Bob and Jan Thelen
