Tranquility abounds in this enchanting, completely renovated waterfront cottage by the sea. Our charming home, which we call ''Bittersweet Cottage'', was built in 1933 and reborn in 2010. While EVERYTHING is brand new, from the floorboards to the furnishings, it still retains all the charms of yesteryear and beckons you back to a simpler place and time.
The quaint front porch welcomes you and upon opening the front door you are immediately awestruck by the incredible views that lay in front of you. With an open floor plan and a full wall of glass, the home seems to embrace you as you enter this ethereal space. The gourmet kitchen is in the back of the house and is part of the main living area, which allows the cook to enjoy the beautiful views and their company at the same time. The cozy bedroom has a queen size bed and ample storage. The sleeping loft has a queen size bed, inviting window seats, and skylights.
There is also additional hanging space downstairs. The living room has a full size sofa bed.
The '' piece de resistance'' is undoubtedly the beautiful deck. It beckons you to kick back and enjoy the breathtaking views of the water and the woodlands beyond. It is a perfect spot for coffee and a newspaper in the morning , a midafternoon nap, cocktails at sunset, or star gazing at night while roasting marshmallows. It is a true nature lovers' paradise. You can watch turtles sunning themselves on the rocks, fish jumping out of the water, osprey swooping down, and the beautiful swans floating gracefully by.
If you feel like venturing out, the beach is just a short walk up the road. There is also a local marina if you wish to rent a canoe or kayak. The areas many vineyards are just a stones throw away and we are surrounded by wonderful restaurants if you want to check out the catch of the day ( that is, if you haven't caught it yourself already - the jetty at our beach is a popular fishing spot)!
If you're looking for some action, Riverhead is just a short drive away and is known for its shopping outlets, waterslide park , aquarium, and stock car races. We are surrounded by quaint villages like Greenport, which has small town charm with a nautical flair. It also is home to many fabulous restaurants and shops. You can also hop a ferry there to Shelter Island, another beautiful destination, and just one step away from the Hamptons. Orient Point , the eastern most point on the North Fork, has gorgeous sunrises, and you can also catch a ferry there to New England . If you like to cook, don't forget to stop at some of our many farmstands and pick up some of the most amazing fruits and veggies. Let's not forget what so many people come to the North Fork for - our incredible vineyards. Wine tasting is a must!
You'll love being part of our quiet community. Our family takes great pride in our pristine home. It is an ideal home for a romantic getaway or memorable retreat . Our friends have often told us that being at our home is like being on ''golden pond.'' Bittersweet Cottage is a magical place that has given us a lifetime of indelible memories.
A little cottage by the sea,
Oh! A wondrous place to be!
My family and I have owned our charming cottage since 1989. We all adore the North Fork and especially our little piece of paradise. Four generations of our family have now enjoyed vacationing here and we absolutely love sharing our special home with guests from all over the world.
Hope Schneider purchased this cottage in 1989
Gorgeous, spacious, clean and well-maintained, beautiful view, great location, friendly and accommodating owner. Perfect North Fork experience. This is the one, book it! We will definitely try to stay here again in the future.
This property has it all. Very convenient location to access the nearby inlet with beach, vineyards, countless farmsteads etc. It is also the perfect spot to just not go anywhere but enjoy the exceptional setting of the house directly on the water leading to the LI sound. Hope responded to all our responses within a few minutes. She also helped to organize cake/flowers to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday. We stayed there with 3 adults and one toddler and had plenty of room. The listing description was accurate. The property is clean and very well-maintained. I would recommend this property to anybody. Thank you Hope for your outstanding hospitality and for sharing so much of the history of this place!
We stayed here 2 years ago and just returned for another weekend at the Bittersweet Cottage. The cottage is pristine and exactly as pictured here. It's the perfect location for visiting one of the many wineries, farm stands, Town of Greenport, Shelter Island or just grilling in the backyard space and relaxing. Hope, the owner, is the sweetest. She treats you like a friend, not just a tenant. There are so many little touches in this place that you can see she cares a lot about making this place a home away from home. I highly recommend and will be returning in the future.
I have lived on Long Island my whole life but I have never stayed on the North Fork. Our 2 teenage daughters (18,21) just celebrated their birthdays and we were interested in a family getaway just the 4 of us. When we opened the door to the cottage we were greeted by such an incredible site! What you see in the pictures is exactly what it is. Gorgeous!! So warm and cozy! The inlet entertained us for hours with all the beautiful birds and turtles! We rented a kayak and enjoyed the view from the water! We went to the vineyards and shopped in Greenport. We didn't go out to dinner because the kitchen and barbeque were so convenient and quite frankly we didn't want to leave this beautiful home!! Thank you Hope for sharing your wonderful cottage and for allowing us to create such wonderful memories with our beautiful children. I cannot wait to go back!!!
We were very impressed with Bittersweet Cottage. It is much more than can be shown on the web site. The view, the ambiance, the birdsong, the state of the art appliances and furnishings. We didn't want to leave. What a perfect place for us to come with our son, his wife and their 3 week old daughter and spend quality family time with our first Grandchild.
Thank you Hope for thinking of absolutely everything.

What a good, relaxing time we had, staying at Bittersweet Cottage. Although Spring had not yet arrived, it was wonderful to run/walk to the beaches, sit and watch the light change over the water, and just recharge. Although it was a "down" time of year, there was so much to do and explore. The cottage provides a great base. The North Fork is wonderful and great fun to take the ferries (both north and south sides) to Shelter Island and the Hamptons and we never waited long for a crossing on multiple trips. Three days was just not enough time there though.
The bird life on the inlet was the entertainment. "Swannie" came sailing in at least twice a day to check things out. Sorry to miss out on his partner and their little ones which no doubt are on the way.
The kitchen was the best supplied one I have ever encountered in a rental. My only quibble with the furnishings is not enough chair-side or bed-side reading lights.
We do hope to sail in again!
A quiet getaway yet close to all that the North Fork has to offer. Minutes to Vineyards, farm stands and local villages.
