About dawn mcconnell
.I moved to Kauai with my daughter in 2004 for health reasons. My health greatly improved ( Kauai is good for that) and my daughter went back to the mainland to university. This home seemed a bit big for me alone so I began sharing it with travelers , guest house style. I now am blessed to meet amazing people from all around the world. People who chose this place tend to be unique, gentle souls who fit into the local atmosphere with ease and grace. It has been a lot of fun for me.
dawn mcconnell purchased this Bungalow in 2004
Why dawn mcconnell chose Hanalei
I chose the house here because I am a world traveller and this place is one of the most amazing places, on many levels , that I have encountered in my life. As the locals say, it has' good mana'
What makes this Bungalow unique
I am a writer and a photographer .The possibilities are of what can be captured on film and in words here are , each day, endlessly, timelessly fresh. The ocean, the jungle and the rivers are all right there. And the weather, well, pretty darn easy to take.

Large, beautiful place
This was a wonderful place to stay on the north shore. It is definitely remote--at the end of a small road. But it is wonderfully private, it has several nice places to sit and enjoy the outdoors, and is very well located for exploring the north coast.
We will definitely stay here again next time we come to northern Kauai. Thank you!
Quiet and quirky, way overpriced, didn't have hot water for half our stay
Very quirky- bed in the kitchen and have to park down a steep hill and walk up in the rain every night. For what we paid per night (not allowed to specify here how much) that is insane. And we didn't have hot water in the primary shower for our first two days -- tons of communication to get help with it.
Maia and her friend booked and stayed with us for 3 nights. What she has written here is not exactly true. There is a main shower inside the cottage. It is heated by an electrical hot water heater. It worked perfectly the entire time they were with us. I checked it with them present to verify this. There is also an outdoor shower that runs, on demand, off of propane. The second day of their stay they called me to tell me the outdoor shower was not giving them hot water. They said they needed it immediately as they wanted to use that shower instead of the indoor one. I was driving from town and explained I would get there within 20 minutes and check the shower. . I did arrive within that time and checked the shower and made sure it was working well. However they were unkind about having to wait the 20 minutes as they were anxious to get into town to party. There is a steep driveway up to the cottage and guests take that up to unload luggage or groceries. Most of our guests then park on the lower .portion of the property as there is ample and easy parking there,
However, guests that have a need to park up above can do so. These were young girls and had no health issues but they wanted to park up above anyways.. Unfortunately they did not park as instructed and blocked the driveway with their car so that no one else could have easy access to the upper portion of the property. I requested that they be aware of that but the information was not well taken. These were both simple and
easy to remedy issues..unfortunately these guests were not the easiest to host.
We had planned on the song of the jungle being a base to go out and explore the North coast, but we ended up spending almost all our time right there.
Listening to the birdsong, all the tempos of the rain, the wind in the fronds, I guess “the songs of the jungle”, we were completely enthralled. We spent time watching the jungle materialize out of the mist and then disappear right back with the occasional rainbow marking the transition. Additionally we painted a few simple watercolors, read, lounged, ate in and decided this was the perfect vacation. A very pleasent surprise.
Lovely secluded spot in the jungle!
What a great first stay in Kauai for my newlywed wife and I. This is first and foremost all about the excellent location. The open floor plan and screened in windows are also fantastic so you can listen to the birds, rain showers, and nearby stream at all times. Matty the property manager is also available and really nice. Only thing keeping this from being a 5 stars is the ants!
The jungle bungalow was great after I got over the musty, out dated kitchen.
My first impression was dissapointment. It was musty(blame it on the rain), outdated(the appliances are so old), and ant ridden. By day 2 I was used to it and by day three it felt comfortable. The outside grill obviously wasn't cleaned often and I wondered how private our little bungalow was since many of the windows opened to the jungle. The outside shower was an adventure trying to figure out when it'd turn cold and then waiting for it to warm up again.
On the positive side, the morning birds were so fun to hear! We didn't have to listen to chickens. Matty, the caretaker, gave us some great 'locals only' tips for our trip-which made the whole experience worth it.
I think it is important here to clarify a few of Robyn's opinions so that this review doesn't confuse or unnecessarily discourage any future guests
The cottage itself is not actually musty.. It is surrounded by jungle vegetation which has the moist smell of rainforest plants. The jungle smells stronger when it rains.. often you can smell the jungle flowers.. some of the flowers have a musty sweet smell that most of us 'jungle goers" love.
One of the challenges of living in the jungle and on the island is rust. It happens almost overnight. All of our appliances are less than a year old as we replace them frequently, The fridge is a full fridge with freezer. It is 5 months old. The washer and dryer are 4 months old. The rest of the kitchen appliances are less than 10 months old. I am off island at the moment but my caretaker Matty , upon reading this review, assured me that the appliances still look new and that there is no rust on anything yet. My pest control team have checked and assured me there are no ants in the appliances.
Matty has checked the grill and cleaned it well. He said it was already clean but he has assured me he has taken it apart and cleaned it again.
The cottage up on a hillside and is surrounded by 4000 acres of uninhabited conservation lands. This makes for a very private location. All the windows are normal windows..they have screens with glass louvers or glass sliders that can be closed, or opened to allow breezes to come through. All the windows have curtains or drapes that can be pulled closed.
The outside shower is heated by an 'on demand' propane heater. When you turn it on it takes 40 seconds to heat up. It will turn itself off after 20 minutes. If you want to shower for > 20 minutes you can turn it on once more and wait 40 seconds for it to get hot again. We have this type of outdoor shower because it will function even if the power were to go out in a storm. There is also an indoor shower that runs off a normal electrical hot water tank.
Awesome view of the mountain, quiet and surrounded by nature.
We have just returned from a couple weeks in Kauai and spent a few nights here and loved it. So peaceful at night with millions of stars overhead, awesome view of the mountain with birds and flowers all around during the day. Clean, comfortable home with a very nice outdoor shower, there's one inside but the one outdoors is really cool. Close to Tunnels Beach if you're a snorkeler and many other beaches good for swimming as well. They also had a very friendly cat named Jimmy that would hang out with us out on the lanai purring away while enjoying the attention and sun. I recommend this place to anyone.
3 Miles from Hanalei Town where there is boutique shopping, diverse restaurants from fish tacos and burgers to high end dining and a public beach with surf lessons and picnicing. We are also 2 miles from the Na Pali coast with the Kalalau hiking trail. We are within 1/4 mi to 5 miles from many covelike beaches with snorkeling , swimming, surfing, and all that.
