Our family fell in love with the McCloud area while visiting friends for the 2005 New Years holiday. We loved the idea of buying a home that allowed us to enjoy the small town right from our front porch, and have everything we needed within a short walking or biking distance. Restoring and renovating Toad Hollow has been a remarkable journey, and we absolutely love sharing it with families from all over the world. After all these years, we are still discovering new places to explore, and never grow tired of the beauty of the changing seasons, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, mountains, and trails.
Lindy and Dan Fay purchased this house in 2005
McCloud is a slice of heaven in Northern California. Enjoy all the benefits of a beautiful mountain getaway without the crowds. Don't worry about holiday freeway traffic jams, just head north on I-5, open the door and relax!

The house was great and exceeded all of our expectations. Kitchen, bath, bedrooms fully equipped with all essentials. The amazing view of Mt. Shasta from the front lawn was spectacular. The owners were extremely kind and helpful and had wonderful recommendations. We would highly recommend this property.
Toad Hollow was perfect for our family (myself, my brother and sister-in-law, their two kids and my two Labradoodles) and we all have fallen in love with McCloud and the Mount Shasta area. This is a historic mill house in a friendly and down-to-earth former lumber town, surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in California. On a clear day, you can walk out the door and see the majestic Mt. Shasta towering over the end of the street. As long-time Tahoe skiers, the nearby Mt Shasta resort was a revelation--small and friendly, a remarkably uncrowded and inexpensive alternative to Squaw Valley etc., with a range of easy to challenging runs and great powder, without the hassle of spending #s of hours in I-80 traffic. The whole Shasta-Trinity area is a recreational paradise, and the cultural pleasures of Ashland, OR are only an hour away. Back in McCloud, the owners have restored Toad Hollow with love and care, so it is very functional and comfy while still retaining its old-time charm. The location is ideal--you can walk anywhere in town on plowed roads (including the lovely, dog-friendly McCloud Hotel, where we made new friends and enjoyed a bubbly, musical New Year's Eve dinner in magical surroundings). Lindy was communicative, accommodating and organized. No problems with directions, instructions on how the house worked, special requests, and lots of great suggestions on activities, sights to see restaurants, etc. The house is intelligently laid out for a large family (although note that the upstairs bathroom is attached to the master bedroom--not a problem for our family, and the downstairs queen bedroom has an en suite bathroom for light sleepers like me) and the fenced front and back yards were the perfect, safe playground for dogs and kids. We are already planning our next adventure here and imagining what it must be like in the summer. Thank you for sharing your home and town with us, Fay family!
I booked Toad Hollow for myself, 3 friends, and my little dog to visit Mt. Shasta and do some day hiking. It was a great place to stay! The bedrooms were all comfortable, the kitchen was a wonderful combination of modern appliances and original touches, and the living areas were very welcoming. It was quite warm when we were there, but there's a whole-house fan the really cools down the 3 bedrooms upstairs quickly in the late afternoon/evening. Those bedrooms share a sizeable bathroom that's entered via one of the bedrooms, so put your soundest sleeper there. The downstairs bedroom has it's own bathroom, but the trade-off is that the whole-house fan doesn't hit downstairs so you need a regular fan and it doesn't cool down quite as much as the upstairs. House and yard were extremely clean and well kept, plenty of parking for our two cars in front of the house, with more parking we rarely used in the back. Good supplies and equipment in the kitchen; we enjoyed hanging out on the front porch watching the world go by and cooking each evening after being out and about all day. There's a nice size fenced yard with lots of grass for a little dog to roll around in. Great hikes we did in the vicinity include Squaw Valley/Cabin Creek and the Pacific Crest Trail to Porcupine Lake, along with the much more local McCloud waterfall walk/hike. At the house there's also a one-page guide for a walking tour of the historic buildings in McCloud, which is another interesting way to spend an hour or two. All 4 of us agreed this was one of the best places we've booked over the years!
We stayed at this great place during the Memorial weekend. We were party of 10 with one kid and Toad hollow was a perfect house for us. The house is very comfortable and it was a great place to gather with friends. It was well decorated and stocked with kitchen utensils, supplies and toys for kids. The beds were very comfy and night was extremely peaceful. We spent time kayaking in McCloud lake, swimming in Mccloud falls and playing team games at night. The host Lindy is an extremely nice and friendly lady and her recommendations on breakfast place, lunch place and kayak/ bike rentals was very helpful with our planning. We would highly recommend staying at Toad Hollow and McCloud.
Toad Hollow is located in a quiet neighborhood
It has a lovely backyard where we ate dinner.
Nice hotel nearby has dinner also?
House has everything you could need.
Owner was very helpful describing how to use everything and had lots of info on local attractions.
I would recommend this home to anyone!
We had heard great things about McCloud from some friends and wanted to try something different than Lake Tahoe. The drive was less than 5 hours and when we arrived late, Toad Hollow was waiting with lights bright and warm. The house is perfect for our 3 kids and lab, Gizmo; clean, well appointed and just plain cute. Every morning, my husband and I walked into town and had breakfast at the White Mountain Cafe, before the kids were awake - perfect! Best of all, we were on the ski slopes in 15 minutes with no traffic or parking hassles - during Ski Week! This is a true gem. Thanks Lindy - we'll be back!
