Overview

La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Two 2 and 3 bedroom Aveyron gîtes with fantastic views up the Dourbie valley

Our Castel (French for a big house) incorporates two recently converted self contained holiday rentals (gîtes), both of which have magnificent views and are named after the local (Griffon and Egyptian) vultures that often fly overhead.

We are situated in the Aveyron department at the south-west corner of the Cevennes National Park just 80 minutes from the Mediterranean. A 30 minute drive down the beautiful, Dourbie valley brings you to the historic town of Millau where the crystal clear Dourbie (ideal for fishing) meets the river Tarn that then winds through the town and passes under the world renowned Millau Viaduct. More locally, a 10 minute drive up the Dourbie valley takes you to the 10th century village of Nant equipped with a variety of shops and restaurants. From our rock we have a 360 degrees view looking up and down the Dourbie valley and also up the Trevezel valley.

The area is a paradise for people with a wide variety of interests including walking, geocaching, bird watching, fly fishing, cycling, canoeing, geocaching, butterflies, paragliding, the Tarn and Jonte gorges, orchids, stunning scenery, Roquefort cheese, Knights Templar fortified villages and more...

This property is suitable for a variety of holiday styles:

Quiet and relaxing: in our shared garden with 360 degree views of the valleys and hills around us.

Romantic: having a quiet drink on our sheltered north facing terrace.

Cultural: visiting Knights Templar villages and museums in the area.

Family: treasure hunting or just walking in the hill guided by our hand held GPS (Sat Nav) devices.

Active: canoeing, via ferrata, canyoning, swimming in the Dourbie, paragliding...

Please refer to our CastelDeCantobre website for more detailed information and to view our many photos of the local wildlife and scenery.

About Lionel and Peggy Haines

I am English and my wife is Irish. Although we have been together since 1983 we only got married in 2009 in preparation for our new life together in France.

Lionel and Peggy Haines purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Lionel and Peggy Haines chose Aveyron

We used to come on holiday to the region every other year for a long time and the opportunity to live here and make enough money to survive came up. So we have been living here since December 2009 and are enjoying every minute of it. Both of us love the countryside and the wildlife here and in between looking after the gîtes we go for lots of walks. It's a fantastic place to live, come and share it with us!

What makes this cottage unique

We are surrounded by countryside, both valley scenery and the wild 'causse' land above the valley. Boredom is impossible here: we never tire of the scenery from our terraces or driving down the Dourbie valley to Millau.

I love to go fishing in the beautiful crystal clear Dourbie trout river if only for 'a walk on the wild-side', catching a fish is secondary to watching a beaver swim past or catching a glimpse of a deer or red squirrel drinking from the river while a kingfisher darts by!

Peggy, on the other hand prefers having a coffee on dry land, meeting friends and watching village life in nearby Nant.

Please refer to our CastelDeCantobre website for more detailed information and to view our many photos of the local wildlife and scenery.

A tranquil escape from the hectic world!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in the Egyptian Gite for two weeks over Christmas was exceedingly peaceful and just what we needed. Lionel and Peggy were excellent hosts, welcoming us into their home like old friends! The gite was exactly as described and was very clean, well equipt and cosy. We were met upon arrival and shown around. Peggy supplied us with, a very welcomed, home-made loaf of bread! Throughout our stay, both Lionel and Peggy were on hand to give us directions and suggest places to visit. The views of the gorge were wonderful and we experienced warm and sunny weather over the Christmas break. The drive to Millau was spectacular, as it followed the gorge with all its twists and turns. The location was well placed for many walks, as well as visiting different attractions. We even drove to the Mediterranean, one day! Montpellier le Vieux was spectacular, as was the walk up to it; though you can also drive to the entrance! Gorge Du Tarn, Roquefort and Mont Aigoual are all must visits too! It was super to see vultures soaring overhead and we even got to see two wild boar. A wonderful location, with excellent hosts! We would definitely recommend this gite.

Notes:
The garden, our small north facing terrace (beautiful in the evening and sheltered during the day) and the 7 garden recliners are shared between both our gites. Internet access is 2Mb and is shared between the 2 gites and us so is not fast enough to download videos and play internet games, it is provided for communication and information researching purposes. Being a very small fortified village built on a limestone outcropping with a no through road the village is relatively child friendly although there are some elevated areas, so children who have not yet learnt what is and is not dangerous should be supervised. Parking is available 100m from our gites at the village entrance.
