About the property

Castel de Cantobre Gîtes

Our Castel (French for a big house) incorporates two recently converted self contained holiday rentals (gîtes), both of which have magnificent views and are named after the local (Griffon and Egyptian) vultures that often fly overhead.

We are situated in the Aveyron department at the south-west corner of the Cevennes National Park just 80 minutes from the Mediterranean. A 30 minute drive down the beautiful, Dourbie valley brings you to the historic town of Millau where the crystal clear Dourbie (ideal for fishing) meets the river Tarn that then winds through the town and passes under the world renowned Millau Viaduct. More locally, a 10 minute drive up the Dourbie valley takes you to the 10th century village of Nant equipped with a variety of shops and restaurants. From our rock we have a 360 degrees view looking up and down the Dourbie valley and also up the Trevezel valley.

The area is a paradise for people with a wide variety of interests including walking, geocaching, bird watching, fly fishing, cycling, canoeing, geocaching, butterflies, paragliding, the Tarn and Jonte gorges, orchids, stunning scenery, Roquefort cheese, Knights Templar fortified villages and more...

This property is suitable for a variety of holiday styles:

Quiet and relaxing: in our shared garden with 360 degree views of the valleys and hills around us.

Romantic: having a quiet drink on our sheltered north facing terrace.

Cultural: visiting Knights Templar villages and museums in the area.

Family: treasure hunting or just walking in the hill guided by our hand held GPS (Sat Nav) devices.

Active: canoeing, via ferrata, canyoning, swimming in the Dourbie, paragliding...

Please refer to our CastelDeCantobre website for more detailed information and to view our many photos of the local wildlife and scenery.

About Lionel and Peggy Haines

I am English and my wife is Irish. Although we have been together since 1983 we only got married in 2009 in preparation for our new life together in France.

Lionel and Peggy Haines purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Lionel and Peggy Haines chose Nant

We used to come on holiday to the region every other year for a long time and the opportunity to live here and make enough money to survive came up. So we have been living here since December 2009 and are enjoying every minute of it. Both of us love the countryside and the wildlife here and in between looking after the gîtes we go for lots of walks. It's a fantastic place to live, come and share it with us!

What makes this cottage unique

We are surrounded by countryside, both valley scenery and the wild 'causse' land above the valley. Boredom is impossible here: we never tire of the scenery from our terraces or driving down the Dourbie valley to Millau.

I love to go fishing in the beautiful crystal clear Dourbie trout river if only for 'a walk on the wild-side', catching a fish is secondary to watching a beaver swim past or catching a glimpse of a deer or red squirrel drinking from the river while a kingfisher darts by!

Peggy, on the other hand prefers having a coffee on dry land, meeting friends and watching village life in nearby Nant.

Please refer to our CastelDeCantobre website for more detailed information and to view our many photos of the local wildlife and scenery.

Notes:
The garden, our small north facing terrace (beautiful in the evening and sheltered during the day) and the 7 garden recliners are shared between both our gites. Internet access is 2Mb and is shared between the 2 gites and us so is not fast enough to download videos and play internet games, it is provided for communication and information researching purposes. Being a very small fortified village built on a limestone outcropping with a no through road the village is relatively child friendly although there are some elevated areas, so children who have not yet learnt what is and is not dangerous should be supervised. Parking is available 100m from our gites at the village entrance.

Fantastic accommodation and hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic family holiday in this lovely location. The Gite is located in the lovely village of Cantobre with fabulous views over the Dourbie Valley and is a great location for exploring the local area. The gite itself is very modern with all mod cons including wi-fi, satellite T.V etc and is very well maintained and is very clean throughout. Peggy and Lionel are most helpful and pleasant couple you could wish for, both will do whatever they can do to assist you in making your stay the best you could have, even going as far as bringing up the luggage in his car to save us carrying it through the village and up to the house.

I would say it feels like you are staying with friends rather than being a visitor.

Cantobre village itself is lovely and peaceful, and an ideal area for lazy walks or hard hikes or just to sit around and laze.

Millau is only a short drive away and has plenty to offer, supermarkets, restaurants and good coffee. we would certainly recommend it to friends and family and have already returned with elderly parents who also loved the place.

We have already booked for our fourth visit in April 2014 and I know that this will not be our last visit to Lionel & Peggy's home

we have stayed in both Gites and can recommend them 100%

Fantastic view & good value for money

  • 4 of 5

We received a very warm and friendly welcome from the owners, who helped to get our luggage to the gîte as it is a short distance from the parking area. The little hamlet is charming and the location affords wonderful views, particularly from the terrace of the gîte itself. The accommodation is pleasant and the gîte is very well equipped. The area has dramatic scenery and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Perfection, a real paradise, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We chose Castel de Cantobre for our honeymoon. After researching for a very long time on lots and lots of websites Castel de Cantobre was the clear favourite and an easy choice. It had the ideal mix of requirements we were looking for and the very comprehensive website made our choice that much easier.

Located in a stunning part of France, Castel de Cantobre met all of our needs - quiet, wonderful views, pretty location, local walks and easy access (via a short drive) to the nearest town.

On arrival we were instantly made to feel very welcome by the simply superb owners Peggy and Lionel, the accommodation was excellent, extremely clean, fitted out to a very high standard, spacious and comfortable.

Anything we needed, be it GPS devices, recommendations/advice on local activities/places of interest or simply making us feel welcome, our hosts were always on hand to help and were a joy to speak to. Even though located in the heart of Cantobre, the location felt very private with exclusive views over the valley.

We didn't want to leave, and would definitely recommend this to others, in fact we have already on several occasions.

Some of our highlights were long walks in the gorgeous surrounding countryside, sitting on our own private balcony under the rock face eating local produce bought from the town market or watching the sunset from the shared terrace.

All in all we couldn't have picked a better place for our honeymoon. Peggy and Lionel were wonderful and made our stay even more perfect. We will remember Castel de Cantobre for the rest of our lifes.

Fantastic gite in a fantastic location!

Peggy and Lionel were most helpful throughout our stay and answered our many questions and shared their local knowledge with us! I particularly found the enjoyed using the Garmin E-Trex as it comes pre loaded with some of the best local walks and took us on a couple of great hikes from the Gite. Cantobre village itself is lovely and peaceful and we would certainly recommend it to friends and family (in fact several have stayed following our advice!). We have already booked up for out third stay next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we are looking forward to your stay next year. I hope by then we will have had opportunity to record more walks onto our Garmin GPS devices. Maybe even a few cycle trips recorded by some of our cycling enthusiasts from this year will be available too. See you next year.

Bel endroit !

  • 5 of 5
