'You Never Know What's Behind Closed Doors'. A familiar phrase in Merida and one that truly captures the spirit of our house. Designed by the brilliant architect Henry Ponce, our home features the grandeur and elegance of a colonial home located in one of the best neighborhoods in the historical Centro district. The open courtyard in the center of the house is the first image you see when you open the doors. Situated around the courtyard is the pool , the indoor/outdoor dining/ living areas and the kitchen. A visual feast from anyplace you sit whether you are looking at the hand-cut stone wall, the spectacular water features or the grand arches that surround the courtyard.
A perfect place to entertain! Sitting on the terrace upstairs is another favorite place for us in the evening. There is always a breeze blowing from the north, music from the park and the sound of horses trotting by pulling a carriage. The master suite is upstairs also and it overlooks the courtyard as well as the upstairs terrace. It is a very restful room decorated with fine furniture and the master bath is luxurious. For those wanting to watch TV we have a large flat screen TV with the Roku that has live streaming of all US channels and a sound system. Once you open the door and discover how comfortable and spacious this house is you won't want to leave but when you do the restaurants, shops, parks and Paseo Montejo, the most beautiful boulevard in the city are right outside your front door. Enjoy !
We have always enjoyed traveling and exploring different parts of Mexico but have never felt more at home than being in Merida. I am retired from the local school district and my husband continues to do private consultant work. We love walking through the various neighborhoods of Merida, meeting new friends and finding new restaurants. We also enjoy taking day trips to explore ruins, cenotes or finding new haciendas.
John Burrell purchased this house in 2011
My husband appreciates colonial architecture so we came to Merida to see some homes for sale and ended up buying one. We both felt very comfortable in this city.
This is a really stunning home and for the most part it worked well for us as two couples traveling together. The location was perfect for walking to Paseo Montejo, Plaza Lucia and the main Zocalo, and having a pool was nice for cooling off each day. We were surprised as to how warm the weather was for December. I would only tell other renters that if you have any issues with stairs, the master bedroom is on a second level with 32 steps to climb. The downstairs bedroom itself is spacious but the bed being only a double was a little small for us. Overall for location and beauty I would recommend this home.
Great house, excellent communication, and very helpful hosts! Location is perfect, too. Thank you!
The "Colonial Masterpiece" lives up to it's name. Located in one of Merida's best neighborhoods in the Historic Centro District, this home is simply spectacular and even more impressive than the photographs would indicate. The sheer volume of the soaring ceilings and the open atrium are breath-taking. David, our property manager, greeted us upon arrival and was very helpful in getting us settled into the house and oriented to this magical place. This would have been a great trip if we had never left the house. A short walk, however, gets you to everything; gourmet restaurants, shops, historical sites, mercados, peaceful plazas and parks. Also, check out Paseo Montejo. This beautiful boulevard is literally just steps from your front door. The local people are warm and welcoming and happy to answer any questions you may have. Again, this property is a true gem and "Colonial Masterpiece" may actually be an understatement. My wife and I truly enjoyed our time here and we plan to return later this year with friends.

Well maintained and comfortable property centrally located on quiet street within easy walking distance to top rated restaurants and entertainment. Is set up with bedroom suites on first floor and also on top floor so works well for 2 couples. Note that lots of stairs as ceiling heights over 20 feet but good exercise.
Property manager is very responsive to service requests which were minimal. We had breakfast most mornings at a small café around the corner on a quiet section of Montejo. If you are a walker as I am this is great location as Montejo has wide sidewalks and a Starbucks just 1.25 miles north so good turn around goal. Montejo extends another 2 miles so easy to get your 5 miles in if on that program and many interesting buildings under renovation and lots of activity.
Enjoyed our stay very much but since I am 80 and she is 70 maybe last chance to enjoy this kind of experience. Would recommend property and location.
I stayed here with my husband and father-in-law and we loved it! The layout of the home is extremely unique and interesting. We appreciated the air-conditioned bedrooms since it was VERY hot. The second bedroom is at the top of a very tall set of stairs, so I would not recommend that room for anyone who has trouble regularly climbing stairs. My husband and I stayed upstairs while my father-in-law stayed downstairs. We enjoyed the privacy and beautiful rooftop balcony. My father-in-law especially enjoyed the partially covered swimming pool and has told almost anyone we've talked to about this amazing house. We all loved it!
My husband, 12-year old daughter and I arrived on Christmas night and were let in by the property manager's daughter, Andy. She was very kind, spoke fluent English and helped us order a taxi to have dinner outside the city. The house is stunning - and huge - beautifully restored with gorgeous tile and woodworking. It has all the modern amenities one wishes while traveling (fully updated kitchen, air conditioning in the bedrooms), though be prepared for tepid shower water (never hot) and fairly low water pressure. We had a few minor inconveniences (the clothes dryer was broken and the satellite didn't work). A repair-man came to fix the latter and it was actually nice to not have a tv on for a few days. Merida is enchanting. We were within walking distance of the Zocalo, Paseo de Montejo and our favorite little square near the Hotel Casa San Angel where we ate many breakfasts because the coffee was amazing. Without exception, everyone we encountered in Merida was warm and welcoming. We immersed ourselves in the Yucatan culture with day trips to Uxmal and Chichen Itza and spent a glorious day at the Los Dos Cooking school learning to prepare a traditional Maya meal. We chose to not rent a car and instead relied on taxis which were very inexpensive (compared to L.A. & NYC) and easy to order even during the holidays. All in all we had a wonderful visit and will definitely return.
Merida has a Polo team, there are many outdoor concerts in parks that are nearby, the Gulf of Mexico is 30 minutes away where fishing, boating and snorkeling are available, the Caribbean is 3 hours away , cenotes are numerous in the area which are places to swim and explore caves.
