Villa Berlengas is elegant very spacious semi detached guesthouse, enclosed and private, with car park. South facing and tastefully decorated in a unique countryside location near the coast and major attractions, close to town and beach.
All ground floor rooms have French windows leading into a sub tropical garden with magnolia and wisteria, enchanting patios and terraces with fountains. A large pergola with BBQ enhances alfresco dinning and evening parties. A big plunge pool with sun beds offer hours of fun and delight.
The villa is environment friendly and surrounded by 12 acres of land with oranges, tangerines, pomegranates, olives, figs and almonds. We invite guests who wish to interact with the rural side to watch the pressing and tasting of olive oil or the tasting and transformation of figs into brandy. Try fresh fruit for breakfast straight off the trees. 2 bikes offer sights of local flora and fauna along the Ecovia and Algarviana trails. Come and discover our way of life.
TAVIRA - Venice of the Algarve: Tavira, located 8 km to the East, is a picturesque town nicknamed 'Venice of the Algarve', which dates back to 2000 BC an illustration of medieval, renaissance and baroque art, crammed with historic churches, a castle, an ancient Roman bridge, and various museums (the area is renowned for its fishing history/particularly for tuna), frequent art exhibitions are also on display. Maps and orientation are provided on what to see.
Tavira Island and neighbouring beaches have golden sand and are much less frequented, perfect to practice water sports such as scuba diving, surf, kite surf or windsurf. Ideal to relax on during your vacation in Portugal.
OLHAO - Fishing Port of the Eastern Algarve: Olhao, located 8 km to the West, is the main fishing port in the eastern Algarve. The old town is a warren of narrow twisting streets and cubist houses still remaining from the Arab influence. The town is famous for it's Saturday market, where local farmers come from the countryside to sell their fresh home grown products. Here you can find everything for your evening BBQ, the fresh fish is inexpensive and excellent.
FUZETA - Fishing Village: Fuzeta, located 3 km to the South, is a very charming and traditional Portuguese fishing village, with its accessible beach in the lagoon, or you can take a 5 minute ferry trip over to the island with kilometers of long sandy beaches.
The lagoon between the island and main land is warm and calm and therefore offering activities of wind surfing, sailing and diving. Also very suitable for children.
Fuzeta provides small but excellent fish restaurants as well as international cuisine. Enjoy the evening in the main square, sitting under big palm trees, sipping your 'Vinho Verde' and listening to the chirping of the cheeky sparrows.
Me and my wife loved this place, with its charming villa and lovely garden. The plunge pool, toys and swing kept the children so occupied, that they didn't want to go out. Our thanks to Perry for clearing away all the toys for us every evening.
Hope you enjoy the wine.
Having just returned from my third stay at Berlengas I would like to thank Sarah and Henrique once more for making my stay perfect as always. The villa is spacious and clean, the recent improvements to the kitchen, which is extremely well equiped and now includes a dishwasher are a real asset to the property. I could quite happily spend my entire holiday enjoying the total peace and tranquility offered by the beautifully maintained gardens and plunge pool terrace but there is life nearby if you want it. The owners are always at hand to answer any questions you may have on places to visit or the best restaurants to try. I would recommended the property to anyone looking for the ideal get away from it all holiday, I have returned to the UK feeling totally refreshed and look forward to returning to Berlengas very soon.
This is a magnificent property, quiet, peaceful, tranquil and close to any of the amenities you might require to enjoy the best Portugal has to offer.
This is my third time visiting Berlengas and I would highly recommend this property to anybody who desires a quality stay in the country but near enough to villages, trains, buses etc. that you might require to explore all that Portugal is.
The property is well appointed. Sarah and Henrique are the best possible "landlords" you could possibly desire. They are a constant source of information and support to help you plan or organize anything you might want to see or do and are always just a short distance away if you have need of anything.
The house is clean, spacious, well appointed. Lots of windows which means lots of natural light. Very comfortable furnishings, kitchen has everything you could possibly need and the many patios available to relax, take sun, relax in the soaking pool, etc. are wonderful. Sun or shade available at all times through the day.
If there must be a heaven on earth, it has to be at casa Berlengas!! The house is surrounded by al kinds of fruit trees, which the lovely owners allowed us to pick. Imaging waking up, listening to various birds and pick lemons, tangerines, oranges and grapefruits to make a healthy morning cocktail. During the day we spend most of our time sitting on the splendid patio, eating all kind of nice local Portuguese food and drinking the good wine from the Alentejo. The owners are such lovely, good and genuine people, I think we became friends!! Henrique did spoil us with fruit, dried figs and olives to die for! The house itself is immaculate, well provided, nothing to complain. Who does anyway, better stay at home then because they will complain everywhere!
Although the place is very rural, access to the main road either to Olhao or Tavira is very easy. Just at the corner entering the main road is a very nice Tapas bar Rituals, run by the Cuban Mario Riva who makes the most beautiful (and dangerous) Caipirinhas and other lovely cocktails. He also serves good Tapas.
The garden is Eden, very mature with exotic flowers, bushes and tree. Never saw a pomegranate tree before. Cant wait another 11 months, but time flies when you have none, so they say.....
Thank you Henrique and Sarah, your are the best landlords we know.
I have just returned to Canada following a glorious three month stay at Berlengas, this fabulous haven tucked away a few short kms. from villages, the sea, the mountains, and countless hiking/biking/walking opportunities.
I cannot say enough about how much I love and enjoy this place. The villa and property are pristine, comfortable, well maintained and close to almost any type of activity/convenience you might need.
The two of Fuzeta is a short bike ride, walk or drive away, about 3.5 kms. You can take the route over the salt flats, part of the Ria Formosa, where you will encounter endless varieties of sea birds and rarely another person. This village has any amenities you might need.......grocery, butchers, pharmacy, restaurants (check out Trip Advisor....my many reviews are posted there) and a lovely beach area. ABout 5 kms in the other direction is Moncarapacho.....another charming village and all the amenities...minus the beach!!!
The villa comes equipped with two bicycles and the routes to both these villages (as well as many others) is relatively flat, a couple of tiny hills, nothing overtly challenging and the rides, endlessly entertaining with fruit orchards, fertile farm land, locals calling out and waving, you'll even see an ostrich or two if you take one particular route!
About 1/2 a km from the house is the train station of Livramento. From here you can virtually travel est to west, across the Algarve, or to Lisboa, easily, cheaply and efficiently. The train is comfortable and such a delightful way to travel around.
Beaches are easily accessible on the Ilha da Fuseta or Barril Beach on the Ilha da Tavira.......you can bike to both, of course the Ilha da Fuseta also require an inexpensive and efficient boat ride from the Fuseta harbour.
Sarah and Henrique, the owners of this charming place, are amazing. Always there when you need them, helpful and informative. To me they felt like family and knowing they were just a call out away, especially when I was alone there for a few weeks, many many miles from home, was comforting. They both are busy with their own passions and of course maintaining the property and farm but whenever we connected, always time for a lovely interesting chat and a deeper connection. I can honestly say, two of the best hosts I have ever had the privilege of renting from.
I spent two months with friends at Belengas this year (February 14 - April 14) after visiting for the first time last February. I could write a book on how very much we enjoyed our stay. The villa has everything that you need and if not just ask Sarah or Henrique and they'll find it for you - always accommodating and kind, they go out of their way to make your stay perfect.
The property is very well kept and tended to with love. The villa is spacious and comfortable and situated among orange and fig trees. What a joy to wake every day to the sound of birds singing and look outside to discover endless varieties of flowers in bloom, juicy oranges in abundance and sunshine, glorious sunshine. Even the days that we had rain were warm and it didn't interfere with our plans to get outside and enjoy the countryside.
Every town in the Algarve is easily accessible by a very inexpensive and reliable train system with the closest station a short walk from Belengas.
Fuseta is the closest town and a lovely walk or bike ride across the salt flats to get there. Along the way you'll see endless varieties of sea birds - flamingos, egrets, plovers and red legged stilts to name a few. If you enjoy hiking, biking, walking and sandy beaches there are endless places to discover. If you enjoy a quiet relaxing vacation in a quiet rural setting look no further! The Portuguese people are wonderful, the food fresh and quality outstanding.
I would highly recommend Belengas to anybody thinking of visiting Portugal - you won't be disappointed.
As I write this I'm plotting and scheming on how I can return soon and stay longer.
A truly lovely villa. I had the opportunity to spend a month here and wished I could have stayed longer. As a women travelling on my own, I felt safe here and always knew that the owners Sara and Hendrique were close by. Sara is a charming hostess who loves to share her knowledge of the area, where to shop, and some of the best places to eat. Thanks to Sara, I discovered Deni's restaurant my favourite place to enjoy a variety of fish dishes. A very short distance from the villa you can connect with the Algarve bike trails which allows you to explore the surrounding countryside, little hamlets and even cities if you are up to the ride. Two bikes are provided for your pleasure and are both well maintained. Hendrique, Sara's spouse, works endlessly in the orchards on the property. He always has a smile on his face and loves to share the different fruits he harvests with the guests. I hope to return one day and continue to enjoy the welcoming of the Algarve. I would recommend this villa to anyone, travelling alone or in a group, once you have been there, you will want to return!
