Slate House, is a unique and intriguing post-and-beam artist's home, located in a private wooded setting just around the corner from the picturesque village of Bernard, where the town dock and local favorite restaurant Thurston's Lobster Pound is located. The colorful and comfortable interior has a large, open living area upstairs, along with a fabulous kitchen equipped for the gourmet cook, a cozy master bedroom with beautiful tiled shower, and a deck outside the bedroom door. The downstairs bedroom has a separate entrance and bathroom. The artist owner, who lives and works in her studio on the property, maintains an extensive landscaped garden as well as a small orchard and vegetable gardens - guests are welcome to roam! The upstairs living room and bedroom look out onto a small, peaceful perennial garden and the woods beyond.
This is a perfect home for relaxing in a quiet, out-of-the way spot, yet close to the village of Southwest Harbor (4 miles) with all of its amenities.
Pets are generally welcome, please ask! Dogs do need to be kept on a leash however as there are many gardens on this property. Longer term rentals are possible, feel free to call to discuss options. A deposit of $400 is requested to secure a rental, refundable up to 45 days in advance of the rental; after that I am happy to refund your deposit if I am able to re-rent the property. Slate House is available for rental from June-October, other times of the year if available.
As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. In college I studied arts and languages (B.A. in french and fine arts, Tufts); I grew up in the Northeast and have lived in Maine since 1974
cherie purchased this house in 1986
When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1983, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life extends to business co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 30 years now!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....
One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.
I wanted to enjoy the spectacular views of Acadia while avoiding the crowds. My desire was to experience the area as a local. It fit the bill beautifully. The grounds of the property are beautiful and the house is uniquely lovely. From a commercial kitchen fit for a serious cook to a very comfortable bed, I felt like I was at home.
Cherie was a wonderful host offering suggestions when asked but respecting her guests privacy. Her personal artistic touches were evident both in the house and on the property. The home is located on the quiet side of the island but has a lot to offer. I enjoyed meeting locals walking their dogs to other visitors like myself. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty all around us. Despite being on the quiet side of the island there are great restaurants and a small but very gourmet grocery store in Southwest Harbor, a small neighboring community. I couldn't have asked for more!
Slate house was the perfect setting for our family vacation in July 2014. I don't know how I forgot to submit a review of this wonderful home. It was better than described. The only down side is the spotty wifi and perhaps the bedroom configuration if you have small kids. The house is big but the two bedrooms are on different floors. Since the downstairs bedroom is pretty far from the master upstairs, it is not suitable for small children. Cheri was a pleasure and even brought us some delicious fresh greens from her garden. If you like to cook, like I do, you will appreciate the gas stove, griddle and BBQ to NO END!! I was able to make pancakes, eggs, bacon for 5 all at the same time...few batches needed. The house had all needed cookware and the tap water is delicious!! Plus, that BBQ grill got so hot so fast that dinner was done in no time at all. Thank goodness because the biting Maine flies would eat you alive if you stayed outside any longer than that in the evenings! The house is well equipped with heavy duty screens so insects were never a problem inside the house. In our down time I read a couple of novels from the many available in the house. Would definitely rent slate house again!
We always try to rent a house that offers certain qualities and Slate House did not disappoint. The right guest for this house is someone who enjoys privacy in a quiet, serene setting, surrounded by nature. Also someone who does not mind the absence of window blinds/shades. The house is set quite-a-ways back from the road (see video link below), and enveloped by trees, so we did not find modesty to be an issue. However, if you want to sleep-in you may want to pack a sleep mask. Also of note - if you are a chef of any caliber you will likely enjoy the restaurant quality kitchen. For example, it was a joy to be able to cook a dozen pancakes at once on the gas griddle.
We found the listing for this property to be fully accurate.
The house was very clean upon arrival. We did not have to spend even a minute getting it in shape for our stay. In some ways it was similar to walking into our home; comfort from the get-go.
Cherie, the owner, was available and ready to help in any way. She is a caring owner, definitely not absentee or uninvolved, as you often find with vacation rentals.
There were only a few things that we would change or have liked to be different in some way. Each of these is a personal preference, so they have not altered our 5-star rating of the property.
a. Stairs to the basement are wood and a bit slippery for our dog (or people with just socks). We tried to block access at the top keep our short-legged Cardigan Corgi from taking a ride.
b. The basement bedroom is very private. This worked well for our 12-year old daughter and her friend. But, if our daughter was alone down there she probably would have been uncomfortable (i.e. scared at night).
c. The bed in the upstairs bedroom was creaky and not too comfy.
Cell & Internet service (no fault of the house or home owner):
Cell phone signals, pretty much anywhere away from Bar Harbor, are spotty. We were able to make calls, but texts and incoming calls were iffy (both Verizon & ATT). The WiFi works, with Internet access provided via DirecTV. This yielded decent download speeds which varied throughout the day. Despite decent speeds, reliability was shaky. Streaming videos probably won’t work. Uploads are limited to well-under 1mbps.

We loved our stay at Cherie's home. It is off the beaten path in the woods. When you stay at the slate house, you feel like you are getting away from it all. The gardens were fantastic, and her decoration in the home was artistic and unique. It was lovely to meet Cherie and get her tips on where to go and what hikes to do. It was only my husband and me, so we only used the first floor. What a grand first floor it is! Also, her home is near our favorite lobster pound, Thurston's! Don't miss this special place!
It was definitely one of the best part during the trip to Acadia National Park!
An accurate description of a charming setting in a custom crafted home. The architecture, artwork and decor were the perfect get away from the busy typical resort setting. This was a great home base to scout out Desert Island and Acadia Park. The owner was more than an accommodating hostess, providing insight into the local fare. The house was clean and well maintained. We are hoping to return and would recommend this to friends.
Slate House is located on the 'quietside' of Mt. Desert Island which boasts some of the island's finest restaurants, beautiful trails along the shore and in the mountains, a ferry serving the outer islands and charter boats available for whale watching and sightseeing, all within minutes of Slate House. 5 minutes away in Seal Cove you'll find one of the best antique auto museums in the country! The Island Explorer free bus also runs very near by and travels all over the island. A few miles away, Southwest Harbor has small boutiques, a great library, excellent food stores and restaurants, as well as a golf course; the larger town of Bar Harbor, with more extensive shopping and nightlife, is about a half hour drive. And of course Acadia National Park offers miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails along its spectacular mountains, lakes and ponds, and carriage trails.
