The area now know as Bear Creek was home to the Rittenhouse Gap mines, a part of the Mid Atlantic Iron Belt The mines date back to the 1800's and the time of Thomas Edison, who was drawn to the mines to develop a cost effective means of extracting iron ore from crushed rock. The raiload servicing the mines was known as the Catasaqua-Fogelsville Railroad. It was built in the 1850's as a way to transport iron ore to furnaces along the Lehigh River, including Lock Ridge Furnace in Alburtis, where the ore was used to make cannon and machinery. The Rittenhouse Gap mines were abandoned after World War I when the iron industry was drawn to the upper Midwest.

One the the favorite locals weekends of the year is the Macungie car show. One of the country's largest antique and classic cars shows. Das Awkscht Fescht has been a summer tradition for all ages. This year, come cruisin' through 42 acres of fun at the Fescht - and enjoy the great things classic summers are made of. Admission Includes all events, shows, and entertainment. About Owner/manager

Originally from Vancouver Island, Canada. Travel and hospitality has always been in my blood. Opening the farm to guests traveling from all over the world is fun and rewarding. In the winter I am at the next door mountain skiing and coming back to the farm. My work assignments as a photographer include weddings as well as commercial all over the East Coast as well as Internationally. Will caretaker/ co-owner is passionate about farming since he was very young and continues to keep the chickens and sheep healthy and available for the guests to interact with.

Owner/manager purchased this farmhouse in 2007

Why Owner/manager chose Pennsylvania

The farm being located 1.6 miles from a ski resort was definately one of the reasons to purchase the farm. Not to mention the close proximity to New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Washington DC. Recreation is abundant in all four seasons. Cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding are just a few sports. At the farm there is a nature trail to walk around, the fire-pit, BBQ, and front porch faces south to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Having some chickens and sheep makes the farm a perfect getaway after trips into the cities. A work assignment in NYC or Philadelphia for the day makes the farm a perfect retreat at the end of the day.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Experiencing staying at a private farm with sheep meandering in the pastures without the responsibility of taking care of the animals. Almost 10 private acres with a walking trail around the perimeter of the farm and space to relax and unwind all day long. The farmhouse is simple and uncluttered with all the amenities to enjoy in all seasons. The farm is located 7-10 minutes from grocery shopping and minutes from nature and sight seeing. Will is caretaker/ co-owner of the farm so there is always someone available to field questions or be of assistance during your stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a great small event venue!

  • 5 of 5

Our daughter's wedding in August was spectacular! The farm was the perfect location. Our guest were enchanted and my daughter was treated like an honored family member by the owners of this beautiful property. We highly recommend securing this great venue for any 50 +/- gathering. Our advise is to be sure and give yourselves some extra time to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the farm before or after the event.

Unique vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

Had a really great vacation at the Hemphill Farm. The best things about it are the size and privacy - 10 acres of land (one of the owners is sometimes staying in a nearby building but is helpful when needed and doesn't intrude when not). The exterior of the house and surrounding garden are very pretty as you can see from the pictures. We spent hours sitting on the porch, grilled outside and sat round the firepit every night and had a great time.

The inside of the house isn't as nice as the outside - it's a bit dated, sparse and a little shabby, but functional with one exception... when we got there the fridge/freezer didn't seem to be working properly - the fridge was not cooling and the freezer was no cooler than a fridge. We texted with John, spoke to him, and he sent over Will (the other co-owner) to have a look. Within an hour he came back with a replacement fridge/freezer from one of their own properties. Meanwhile the main fridge/freezer came back to life over the next couple of days in any case.

Anyway, the point being that they were very attentive and made sure we were taken care of.

The other highlight was when Gabe took all of us to feed the huge variety of birds they are breeding on-site, along with the sheep - the kids had a great time with that.

Location is very good for Dorney Park, Allentown, Bethlehem, Kutztown etc.

Overall, highly recommended if you like the beautiful spacious grounds, animals; not so much if you're expecting a luxury interior.

Owner's Response: We rarely respond to our reviews as they have been continually outstanding since 2011. "Shabby interiors" we would and could accept "shabby chic". The therapeutic effect from our simplicity of interiors has been embraced by so many groups, escaping clutter and embracing minimalist. Keeping elements dating back to 1872, we decided to forgo too modern of renovations "on purpose" for future generations to experience what a farmhouse actually meant and was. The perfect experience would be groups needing to "unplug." Our appliances were all replaced a few years ago. Arriving with loads of groceries filling the refrigerator and expecting the refrigerator to immediately change drink temperatures...of course it resumed to its normal working condition. We hope no one expects luxurious interiors as we once again reiterate "our purpose is to keep the farmhouse as a restful and peaceful getaway, minimalist."

Heaven on the farm!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had such an amazing stay at the farm! John and Will were incredible, warm hosts and accommodated us to a later check-in after some unexpected tire trouble on the way to the farm. They were quick to answer any questions we had and were very informative of everything in the area that we needed- a 24-hour supermarket, restaurants in town, etc. We are a family with three children ages 10, 10, and 7 and we all loved the farm and the area. We ate at the Alburtis Tavern and the food was really delicious. We visited the Topton pool which was a short 10-minute drive; it had a pool slide which our children loved.

The farm property was very inviting with beautifully landscaped plantings in a serene and private location. We loved watching and listening to the animals. The children were excited to feed the sheep, pet the different animals, and especially loved to visit the hen house and look for fresh eggs in the morning. We all enjoyed learning about the animals as well.

The front porch was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful views. There were so many colorful butterflies to watch. We enjoyed sitting in the adirondack chairs outside and eating at the picnic table. The farmhouse was very charming and a great fit for us-the kitchen was fully stocked with all the cooking utensils we needed and then some. The bedrooms were a nice size with comfortable beds. Being on the farm was the relaxing break we needed from our hectic everyday life-we had an amazing retreat and would love to return in the future. Thank you for being so welcoming to our family!

Wonderful farm house!

  • 5 of 5

My family had a great time at the farm.

Shortly after arrival the house had a small unforseen issue with the plumbing, which John and Will resolved quickly.

The house/property was perfect for our family. Our two young girls enjoyed seeing the sheep and goats. Will took the girls to see the baby chicks, and gave us a fresh egg!

We will definitely be going back to Hemphill Farm!!

Warm and beautiful, gorgeous and peaceful.

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé and I rented Hemphill for our engagement party. John and Will were both amazing! We stayed at the farm and it was the best nights rest we both had in awhile. The farm is beautiful! Our families loved it especially my fiancé 93 yr old grandmother. We had an "I Do BBQ" to celebrate and to have our families meet. We had pictures taken also which I will post once I get them back. We recommend Hemphill if you want a relaxing beautiful getaway, if you are having a small gathering, anything! John and Will are your guys! Ohh and the sheep they are great and you can feed them. It was truly a great experience and we will definitely stay there again for a little R &R! Thanks Hemphill for a wonderful experience!

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this farmhouse as we were traveling from San Diego to Muhlenberg College for our son's graduation. This was the only property that popped up and we are so delighted it did. The location was only 20 minutes from the school. It is absolutely beautiful and relaxing. We loved the big dining room where we could all play games. Another favorite was sitting on the front porch watching the sheep. We had a blast feeding them and hanging out with the chickens and geese. The beds were all comfortable and the property was so clean. Thank you for making a very special weekend even better. We were traveling with my 84 year old parents and they had a wonderful time , as well. I would highly recommend this property!
