The area now know as Bear Creek was home to the Rittenhouse Gap mines, a part of the Mid Atlantic Iron Belt The mines date back to the 1800's and the time of Thomas Edison, who was drawn to the mines to develop a cost effective means of extracting iron ore from crushed rock. The raiload servicing the mines was known as the Catasaqua-Fogelsville Railroad. It was built in the 1850's as a way to transport iron ore to furnaces along the Lehigh River, including Lock Ridge Furnace in Alburtis, where the ore was used to make cannon and machinery. The Rittenhouse Gap mines were abandoned after World War I when the iron industry was drawn to the upper Midwest.

Originally from Vancouver Island, Canada. Travel and hospitality has always been in my blood. Opening the farm to guests traveling from all over the world is fun and rewarding. In the winter I am at the next door mountain skiing and coming back to the farm. My work assignments as a photographer include weddings as well as commercial all over the East Coast as well as Internationally. Will caretaker/ co-owner is passionate about farming since he was very young and continues to keep the chickens and sheep healthy and available for the guests to interact with.
Owner/manager purchased this farmhouse in 2007
The farm being located 1.6 miles from a ski resort was definately one of the reasons to purchase the farm. Not to mention the close proximity to New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Washington DC. Recreation is abundant in all four seasons. Cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding are just a few sports. At the farm there is a nature trail to walk around, the fire-pit, BBQ, and front porch faces south to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Having some chickens and sheep makes the farm a perfect getaway after trips into the cities. A work assignment in NYC or Philadelphia for the day makes the farm a perfect retreat at the end of the day.
Experiencing staying at a private farm with sheep meandering in the pastures without the responsibility of taking care of the animals. Almost 10 private acres with a walking trail around the perimeter of the farm and space to relax and unwind all day long. The farmhouse is simple and uncluttered with all the amenities to enjoy in all seasons. The farm is located 7-10 minutes from grocery shopping and minutes from nature and sight seeing. Will is caretaker/ co-owner of the farm so there is always someone available to field questions or be of assistance during your stay.
John and Will are good hosts and the setting really good for visitors to E, Penn. Thoroughly recommended.
I was lucky to find Hemphill Farm when I was unable to book a room at Bear Creek after I had registered for a conference there. The price was comparable to what I would have spent at the resort, and I didn't have to share a room with my teens ( a huge plus!). We saved money by cooking meals in the well- equipped kitchen. The house was warm, plenty of room to stretch out. The wifi was better than that at the resort! No cell phone issues, either
John and Will were attentive and supplied all of our needs. I would recommend Hemphill Farm as an alternative to Bear Creek.
This was our third annual family Christmas at the farm in Alburtis, Pa. Obviously, if we returned multiple times we are happy with our accommodations there. The owners have made some improvements and it continues to be a pleasant environment for our family. We have 6 people staying overnight during the week and our other children stay with in-laws and actually live in Bethlehem, Pa. We have our family dinner on Christmas eve in the farmhouse (15 people).
I would recommend the farm for a rental based on its location to groceries and shopping areas. In winter they are very close to skiing and other activities. We will try to make it four years next Christmas but a lot is dependent on a possible location change for one of our families to the Philadelphia area. That would require sleeping facilities for 12 people, which is not possible. We wish John and Will the best and hope to see them next year.
This is a country house with three upstairs bedrooms, one with a king, one with a king, and one with two twin beds. The downstairs had a living room, dining room, kitchen, and mud room. It was the best stay we ever had on VRBO. The hosts were very pleasant, showed us the farm, helped us, called to ensure we arrived safely in Philadelphia upon leaving, etc. Truly professional. This is like your grandparents' old farm house. Beautiful. Thanks.
The setting, home and property are absolutely amazing! The gentlemen that own the property are absolutely wonderful! They made our special day even more spectacular!! We will be booking again next year for our one year wedding anniversary!!
When we planned our trip to the Lehigh Valley for a long weekend we didn't want to stay in a hotel. Our trip had a dual purpose - run a marathon and celebrate our daughter's 8th birthday.
Finding Hemphill Farm was a delightful surprise. It was a quaint farmhouse built in the 1870s but updated with great beds and modern appliances. The nine acre farm with sheep and chickens were so much fun for all kids (ages 7-24). Eating on the picnic tables in the yard was awesome. Sitting around the fire pit at night laughing, talking, and enjoying our family was a blessing. And sitting on the porch at night enjoying the rain was extremely relaxing. We loved being at the farm and have made a lot of memories. And what 8 year old girl doesn't love having a farm themed birthday party at a real farm!
The location was key for us. It allowed us quick access to Allentown/Bethlehem without being in all the traffic. It was also a quick drive for our daughter and her husband who live in NYC to be able to join us for the weekend.
If you need room for a larger family while staying in the Allentown area this is a great choice. It is cheaper and has more character than renting 2 or more hotel rooms. And the host was available, helpful, and outstanding. He made us feel like we were at home. We will come back to Hemphill Farm if we are back in the Allentown area.
Enjoy watching the sheep meander through the farm's pastures while sitting on the front porch or dining al fresco at the picnic table in the spring, summer and autumn. A fire-pit and charcoal grill are available. Hiking and mountain bike riding is 1.6 miles away. There is a nature trail around the farm for guests to enjoy. The nearby ski mountain has state of the art snow making as well as a top notch ski school. There is night skiing as well. The farmhouse is a perfect getaway all four seasons of the year.
