We are avid tango dancers. We teach, organize events and import tango shoes into the U.S. Kathleen was a real estate broker in Chicago and also a general contractor, specializing in turn of the century homes. We fell in love with the pasaje and couldn't believe our luck when this unit became available. We did a historic renovation, scouring the demolition yards, auction houses and flea markets for missing details, while also updating electrical, etc., and installing the modern conveniences we expect.
We currently reside in Clearwater, Florida.
Kathleen Prucher purchased this apartment in 2004
We searched the many areas of Buenos Aires and decided on San Telmo, for it's rich architecture and vibrant, bohemian atmosphere. The pasaje was like no other we found. It is a peaceful respite in the middle of a bustling city. Just a three to four block walk to the beginning of the Sunday San Telmo Antique Fair, and fabulous restaurants in all directions. Two different subways within 3 blocks and buses to all corners of the city. Taxis at all hours.
Just arriving at the towering gates of the Pasaje brings you back to another time. Trees arching over the inside walkways, abundant plants and classic historic detailing. Our conservatory ceiling patio with fountain allows some of the pasaje into the heart of the home, which you pass through to get from one room to the other, in classic european style. You can stroll through the pasaje to exit either on Mexico or Chacabuco. Most times, there is a song bird to serenade you.
A beautiful accommodation in the heart of Buenos Aires. It is within walking distance to the city centre, lots of restaurants, shopping and the metro. The apartment itself was very comfortable full of beautiful furnishings. The owner was very helpful in answering our questions and making helpful suggestions. We would highly recommend this accommodation when in Buenos Aires.
This home is truly an unusual find. It's both grand and comfortable, with every modern convenience. There were times we didn't want to leave this house. We also appreciated easy communication with our host and people managing the property. They helped with airport transfers, exchanging money and provided many helpful tips for enjoying B.A. When choosing where to stay in B.A. location is an important consideration. We loved San Telmo. Great restaurants, bakeries, markets and real life. It remains a transitional area that everyone may not appreciate. We always felt safe in this neighbourhood at all hours, despite appearance of some streets. People here are genuine.
In summary - unbelievable home, interesting neighbourhood, fabulous experience!
We rented the apartment for 2 weeks with another couple. I will not repeat the other excellent reviews. Please read them -- they are accurate. The apartment, the bohemian neighborhood, and the proximity to the center of town were much appreciated.
We want to stress how supportive the owner was before our visit to help us prepare for the trip. Fermin, the super, was absolutely outstanding. He ensured that everything worked perfectly in the apartment and also made us discover the neighborhood -- in particular, he directed us to a shop selling gaucho bombachas.
We strongly recommend that you stay in this apartment during your trip to Buenos Aires.
My wife and I spent the month of February, 2012 in this magnificent apartment in San Telmo, the Bohemian barrio of Buenos Aires. It is located within short walks to buses, subway, restaurants, local stores, the many antique shops for which San Telmo is noted, and a delicious empanada chef at the end of the pasaje. Fermin and his wife Rosa looked after the apartment and us exceptionally well. We always felt safe walking in the neighborhood during the day, and we took taxis during the evening hours.
After a full day savoring the many sights, sounds, and tastes, of the city, it was a comfortable haven to return to: the flowers in the spanish-tiled foyer, the unusually-large rooms with their high ceilings, the balcony in the upstairs bedroom overlooking the foyer, the fully-equipped kitchen, all so tastefully furnished, and decorated with lavish paintings. Our daughter, who joined us for a week, particularly enjoyed the downstairs bedroom with its luxurious dressing room and bathroom. We also really appreciated having Wi-Fi along with the dual phone system: one for local calls and the other, Vonage, for calls to home. The apartment fully lived up to the photos.
We would confidently recommend this apartment to our family and friends, and anyone who is looking for a comfortable, well-appointed home-from-home in Buenos Aires.
I chose to stay in an apartment to avoid the sterility and generally cramped room space of a hotel. This would allow us to relax in home-like surroundings, have guests visit us in a comfortable environment and to be able to prepare drinks, snacks or meals if we chose to.
This apartment gave us that and more. It is quite a beautiful apartment in a beautiful historic building. It’s location in the neighbourhood of San Telmo suited us for it’s ease of access to most areas of BsAs and EZE airport, it’s surroundings being very interesting with some of the oldest architecture in BsAs, the large choice of bars and restaurants - some being very old, local establishments and others converted, younger-crowd style places and it’s edgy feel with a mix of demographics of portenos combined with backpackers and tourists. The area grows on you and after spending time in Palmero or Recoletta we were glad we chose San Telmo.
It really is a joy to return to this apartment after a day out and about in BsAs or from an excursion elsewhere in the country. A few reasons why:
• The wrought iron gate from the footpath to the passageway sets the tone as if entering a grand house
• The outdoor passageway – or passaje – with plants in old urns and pots lining either side and it’s length, width and height and turn of the century European architecture just feels welcoming
• The apartment is closest to the gate therefore minimising walking
• The tiles and concrete building materials mean on hot days it’s always cool inside when you enter the apartment
• It is roomy and comfortable
• It is secure and the building superintendent is often about to say hello and help out if needed
The apartment is very well appointed with mostly antique furniture, an array of paintings hanging throughout, a kitchen with most things you would need, a TV in the upstairs bedroom, a good stereo to plug in your iPod, a central heating and cooling system, good wireless and international telephone (complimentary). The front room gives a view to the footpath and street noise if you choose to enjoy that. The 2 bedrooms both have an ensuite and there is a guest/common area toilet – all very convenient. The washer and dryer are modern.
For general supplies there is a good range of stores close by – baker, wine shop, general store, greengrocer, fresh pasta shop.
Others include barber, laundromat, mobile phone store for sim cards, takeaway shops for pizza, rotisserie chicken, empanadas, parrilla meats, sandwic
The photos of this apartment are spectacular but in all honesty they barely do it justice.
We were absolutely thrilled with the place; it is a magically peaceful, beautifully furnished architectural masterpiece in a very centrally located neighborhood within very easy walking distance of the wonderful cafés, restaurants and marketplace of San Telmo, and with quick access to subway and taxis.
The apartment itself and the Pasaje Santarina where it is located is so beautiful that some evenings we just wanted to stay there, sipping wine in our own private courtyard! Fermin, the wonderful super of the Pasaje Santamarina complex, watched over us wonderfully during our stay, and Grisel, the manager of the condo, took excellent care of us, arranging taxis and giving us terrific advice about where to go in the neighborhood and the city.
As a VRBO owner myself, I know how much effort it takes to set up and maintain a home as beautiful as this one. Many thanks and congratulations to the owners for having done such a magnificent job with this place.
Centrally located in historic tango district, with it's own dance floor, walking distance to popular Buenos Aires attractions, San Telmo, Plaza Dorrego, Puerto Madero, Ecological Reserve, Calle Florida.
