A casona is a large estate house built by wealthy, landed Chilean families in the 18th and 19th century. The Casona Carrera is one of the last in Chile that remains with the descendents of the original owners, the Carrera Family, who led Chile into its Independence War with Spain in 1810. Ten thousand square feet of adobe construction is surrounded by a ten-acre park of gardens, fruit orchards and old growth trees from Chilean Patagonia. The casona is in the Central Maipo Valley, known for its production of wine, olive oil, artisan beer, pottery, ceramics, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Guests will enjoy the privacy of their wing of the house and have access to all communal guest spaces such as the pool, gardens, Uruguyan wood-fired grill, wood-fired mud oven and extensive grounds. The guest wing has 3 bedrooms with private bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has an extra room with 2 single beds and a crib. An additional 2 bedrooms can be added. One of these bedrooms has a private bath and the other would need to share one of the bathrooms.

In addition to accommodation, Casona Carrera offers a variety of activities such as vineyard and micro-brewery visits in the area. Guests can also participate in activities such as wine or beer pairing lunches and cooking classes. Excursions to Santiago, the Pacific coast and local artisan villages can also be arranged. A daily dinner menu will be offered to guests at an additional cost. Please contact us if you need more details before making your decision.

About Mac Mitchell

My name is Mac Mitchell and I am in charge of Casona Carrera in El Monte, Chile. I am also in charge of another colonial home in the area, Casona El Trebal. I moved to Chile 9 years ago traveling the world and had no intention of staying very long. Then I started learning about wine and working in wine tourism and now I am managing two colonial properties dedicated to wine and foodie tourism, while making my own wine from local Maipo Valley grapes. My first vintage was a Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Carmenere blend. I've become very good friends with all the local vineyard owners and winemakers and love the opportunity to show people what REAL Chilean wine is all about. It's not just your $5 dollar Merlot anymore!!

Best kept secret!

  • 5 of 5

Our family just recently rented the Casona Doña Javiera Carrera the last week in November. The primary reason for our trip was my daughter's wedding to a local fellow from Santiago which was held at the villa on the next to last day of our stay. What a perfect setting for a peaceful family vacation as well as a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. The rooms are exactly as described on the website. Very spacious. The daily laundry service by the housekeeper, Janette was an unexpected and welcomed treat. The kitchen has everything you need in terms of food prep although the knives could have been sharper. If you are coffee drinkers like we are, consider bringing your own coffee beans supply because believe it or not, it's hard to find a good cup of coffee in Chile! The TV in the living room had several English speaking stations and to our delight, we were able to watch our beloved Steelers play Thanksgiving night, something we thought we might have to drive to a Santiago sports bar to have any hopes of catching the game. The pool is stunning with its large clay pot fountain. Perfect for lap swimming and wading. The landscaping all around the 12 acre property is immaculate thanks to the daily meticulous care of Manuel. Julie, the manager of the villa, is an ex-pat American, who married into the family that owns the villa. What an incredible host. She worked tirelessly with us to plan the perfect week, from baking homemade pizzas (absolutely incredible) in their outdoor clay oven for our first dinner in Chile, to preparing a huge Thanksgiving feast for us and our new in-laws, to working with the local caterer in hosting the wedding and reception. I have just a few really minor suggestions for would be great if they kept a stock of electrical adapters to use for cell phone charging, unfortunately we only had one adapter to share among the 8 of us. There were not any hair dryers in the bathrooms, so we had to ask borrow Julie's. Like I said, really minor. We have rented many villas on previous vacations, and this one ranks at the top. With our daughter living in Chile, we will be returning often and definitely plan on taking a more extended vacation at la Casona Doña Javiera Carrera. Well done Julie Dunphy and the Carrera family!

PS, be sure to visit Valparaiso, Pomaire, and take a horseback ride in the Andes!

Exceeded Our Expectations

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 7 adults with a need for 4 rooms, a kitchen/dining facility to accommodate family meals, and grounds that would offer private outside entertainment for swimming, sunning, exercise, nightly barbecues, and relaxation. Well, we got all of the above and much more. The property is absolutely beautiful and located perfectly for hikes, walks to El Monte, visits to wineries/breweries, and little towns nearby with favorable allure. The staff, Janette and Manuel, were extremely nice people and helpful. Our property contact, Julie, was very willing to work with us from the get go, and extremely helpful giving us information about sites to visit in the area. We are also all dog lovers and we had the opportunity to enjoy 5 dogs that occupy the property. Our visit will be memorable for many reasons for all the members of our family, and in speaking for everyone, we would highly recommend this vacation/property experience.

Private Small Group Lunch (10 People)

  • 5 of 5

We recently had the pleasure of having a small group lunch at the Historic Villa Dona Javiera Carrera and I would highly recommend this location as the perfect place to stay and eat on vacation! When we arrived, we were greeted by the Private Chef, Julie with a warm smile, open arms and a tour around the property. She made us feel like family returning from a long absence. Next, we were shown the garden area where the barbecue area is and it was so beautiful and inviting and our table was waiting for us. It was under a beautiful canopy of table grape vines. I'm sure it is really specular in season with the grapes hanging down. She had homemade lemonade and wine waiting for us as well. She served us what is probably the most delicious 5 course meal that I have ever eaten. It began with a salad, homemade Pizza (the best that I have ever eaten), salmon roll, beef, and the best homemade ice cream. We had stopped a long the way to pick up local wines to pair with the meal. I would have to say that this experience is the most relaxing and best food that I have eaten in all of our travels. To top it off, Chef Julie and the Owner's hospitality was second to none. You would have never know that this was our first meeting. They both made us feel so special, welcome and treated us like family. The grounds are well maintained and look exactly like the pictures shown on this site. I can't wait to go back and this time I will spend my entire vacation here! I would recommend this place as the best vacation spot in Chile. Congratulations on a job well done Julie!!!

The Central Maipo Valley is one of Chile's largest and most important agricultural centers. In the 16th century Spanish conquistadors chose this location to found their new settlement of Santiago because of its very fertile lands and the natural defense provided by the Andes and Coastal mountain ranges. Due to Chile's geographical isolation from the rest of the civilized world at this time, the ability to easily farm a wide variety of crops was vital to the success of the settlers. To this day, the Maipo Valley provides Chile and the world with high quality wine, fruit, vegetables, olive oil, micro-beer, vinegar and grains as well as a deep cultural and historical significance. Just 35 minutes southwest of Santiago, the Casona Carrera provides a unique opportunity to go back in time and live the life of a 19th-century, landed aristocrat, enjoying the fruitful bounty of all that the Maipo Valley has to offer.
