Woodbox is our home in Playa Junquillal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The home was developed by a locally renowned architect and has been uniquely designed to blend into the local flora.
Upon entering the grounds you will be entering a paradise within a paradise. The tranquil rock garden leads directly to a set of glass doors into the home. The home has been designed with sweeping glass windows and doors throughout, providing plenty of sunlight in all the living areas.
The four bedrooms are set up as follows:
-Bedroom one is on the first floor of the home and has a luxurious queen-size bed. The room has its own private terrace and en-suite bathroom. (There is an additional half-bath located on the first floor)
-Bedroom two is located on the second floor of the home and it also has both a king-size bed and its own en-suite bathroom
-Bedroom three is on the second floor and has two queen-size beds. This room has its own bathroom and is ideal for either a kids room or for a group of friends!
-The master bedroom encompasses the entire third floor, along with its own en-suite bathroom and private balcony. The room is absolutely stunning and has views of the Pacific Ocean!
The first floor is a central gathering area for all members of your family or group. The gourmet kitchen has been thoughtfully laid out and includes a five-burner stove top as well as a convection oven. A special bonus is the wine refrigerator for the oenophiles! The dining area has a large, rectangular table with benches to accommodate up to ten people eating at the same time. The family area has a comfortable seating arrangement along with a 46' Sony LED/LCD flat-panel television and Samsung stereo system. Bring your iPod or IPhone to plug into the stereo!
Just off the central gathering area is another set of glass doors leading out to the pool area. The entire group will end up hanging out here, as many of your meals will be prepared on the outdoor barbeque and also because the pool is located in this area. The pool area also has an outdoor shower to for a quick rinse either before going into the pool, or after. For a quick meal, the Iguanazul is just across the street.
Across the road is the beach and the Pacific Ocean. Swimming, surfing, snorkeling are all activities which can be pursued here and more than likely there won't be anyone else around!
Recreational activities abound in Costa Rica and there are many things to do either within a short drive, or for the more adventuresome the volcanoes are a few hours drive away. Please contact us for tours, atv rides, zip lines, and horseback riding.

We are an active family who has enjoyed travelling to Costa Rica for many years. We have worked in the hospitality industry for our entire careers and understand what our guests want when travelling to this very special part of the world.
Michael Mettler purchased this house in 2012
We have had a dream for many years to own a home in Costa Rica. After many visits to different parts of the country, we landed on this very special home on Costa Rica's Gold Coast. The home is far enough away from everything that you feel like you are getting away from it all, yet there are amenities within a short walk or drive from the home.
Our home is the ideal location for an unforgettable vacation in Costa Rica. World-class (famous!) surfing is only steps away. Fishing, horseback riding, ATV riding, mountain biking, surfing, SUP, kayaks, and zip lines are a short drive away. Hiking are right outside the doors of the home. The Pacific Ocean is steps away and world-class surfing spots are located all around the home.
The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the house was not quite as well kept as in the pictures. Although the house is still beautiful, it seems in need of a little maintenance, mostly on the outside. I do, however, want to praise and compliment the concierge manager and chef! Both were very welcoming, accommodating with excellent service and manners. Fabrice, the concierge manager, was waiting at the house upon on our arrival and continued to connect with us throughout the week to ensure we had everything we needed and were set for our activities. He even handled a potential problem quickly and calmly. It was so refreshing to know he was just a call away, if we needed anything at all. Camille and Pascal, the chefs, were also wonderful and the food was delicious! They even made a beautiful cake for my daughter's birthday. I highly recommend hiring them for a meal or two while your stay at Wood Box.
The property was just as advertised, the natural beach was in walking distance and thoroughly enjoyed it was very few people there sometimes we were the only ones! The house was perfect for me and my husband, two daughters with their husbands and two small 3 and 5 grandchildren. We went to many of the local restaurants but I do recommend a rental car
(We had 2) it would have been a good hike to any of them. Twice we went Lola's on the beach for the day, great food, drinks,
Watched surfers and swam in ocean! My family was very pleased with everything ! Oh and we had a personal chef for two meals and a birthday cake, her name was Sybil, I would recommend her! And Fabrice was there if we needed anything just a phone call away.

The Wood box worked out perfectly for our group of 3 couples. We were looking for some solitude, comfort, access to the beach and yet be within reasonable transportation distances to a couple of different locations. We did not rent a car which is probably not advisable for many folks but our active group enjoyed the extra walking to Junquillal, the market(3/4 mile one way) and to LoChito(a local restaurant). Fabrice and Patti, the concierges, had the house stocked as requested and were incredibly accommodating in helping us book transportation to Samara, Avellanas, Tamarindo plus our transport to and from the airport. Fabrice stopped by a couple times to check on us and was great help when one of our party messed up the safe combination. They also helped set up a welcome dinner onsite with a local French chef and his wife which was absolutely incredible and a cool experience.
Couple of items of note. Next door is the Hotel Iquanazul which has a restaurant onsite. We ate breakfast and dinner there twice during our stay and the food and service was great. Local reviews had not been good but the new owners are turning it around and we found the local style food and fresh seafood to be excellent. It is also the best place to watch the amazing sunset each night if you don't want to walk to the beach.
Approximately 1/2 mile from the house is a small family owned restaurant called Lo Chito. Do NOT miss eating there. We did twice and it is amazing. We also dined at Lilly's(best ceviche I've had) and Tatanka(great pizza) in Junquillal which were excellent. There is a new bar/restaurant opening at the end of the road in Junquillal but they were not ready to serve food yet. We did enjoy some cold beverages and watched the sunset from there.
Beach access at the Wood Box is great and there literally are miles of walkable beach that is so uncrowded you won't know what to think. The area is completely safe(we walked the beach at night twice), the local people awesome and it is a perfect location for a stress free getaway which is exactly what our group of 50-ish professionals were looking for.
Regarding transportation, Fabrice and Patti lined us up with TPV tours and Fernando and Doug. These guys were great, affordable(1/2 the cost of a rental car for the week) and truly added to the quality of our trip. We had an amazing trip.
Woodbox was everything we were looking for to complete our adventure vacation. We woke up every morning to rays of light throughout the house.
The house was fully equipped. kitchen pool and shed made us feel comfortable as our own home. Everything you need from surf boards to bicycles complete dishware. Also cleaning service to feel the benefits of being in a hotel. The beautiful modern architecture and home design brought about the feel of upscale living amidst a beutiful outdoor junglelike environment. 4 bedrooms gave each of my 3 boys and my wife and I the quiet privacy we needed after long days touring.. The house was cozy enough to bring us all together for evening dinners in a beutiful dining area or just hanging out in the living room playing cards or by the pool enjoying the sun. We spent Saturday swimming in the ocean which was steps from the house. The house also had a very knowledgable caretaker Fabrice. He was available 24/7 with anything and everything we needed. From planning day trips or assistance with local hot spots. Definitely recommend this place to familiy vacationers as well as young adults looking for a getaway.
We just returned from a great Costa Rica vacation where Woodbox was our home away from home. Woodbox has everything a family could possibly need for an ocean vacation - walk to the beach, boogie boards, an outside shower, a pool for relaxing, a bbq, a laundry room and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms! We had two families, 4 adults and 4 kids ages 7 - 11, and we never felt crowded. Woodbox provided a secluded atmosphere, with at least 4 restaurants within walking distance, a great concierge service who can arrange all travel and excursions, and friendly people EVERYWHERE. In addition, if you need access to wifi or TV/DVDs, it is there for early mornings or end of the day when everyone wants to relax. Woodbox makes it easy to totally unplug or stay connected. You can hear the howler monkeys from the house and walk to both a swimming beach and a black sand beach with tide pools. Zip lining was a favorite activity for the entire family, but the volcano hike, waterfall jumping, boat tour and surfing lessons did not disappoint. A week at Woodbox will be sure to be fun and relaxing!
Everything was as advertised. A few things not mentioned in VRBO:
1. The house and grounds were very well kept, and you hardly knew the staff were there.
2. Fabrice is a tremendous asset---most helpful.
3. The House Guide was an excellent reference with a very detailed map in the back.
4. The nearby hotel, Hotel Iquanazul, is under new management/ownership. Great sunsets from the bar/patio.
5. Fabrice arranged for an airport pickup for one of us. The driver, Doug, is a retired Dallas cop. Very good and highly recommended. If you need an airport pickup, I would ask for him specifically.
This was our 5th VRBO rental in Central America; it was head and shoulders above the others.
Wildlife abounds in this part of the country!! Howler monkeys travel through this area in the evening hours. Leatherback turtles lay their eggs on Playa Junquillal September - March. Many types of exotic birds nest in this area. Other types of activities are available, including tours of the country, zip lines, horseback riding, atv's, and restaurants/nightlife are a thirty minute jaunt to Tamarindo. There are also secret gems in the area, including local 'sodas' and full-service restaurants serving everything from wonderful local Tico meals to unbelievable (one of the best meals we have ever experienced!) continental cuisine.
