Somtara is the name for this vacation rental. Somtara has been judged by many repeat island visitors as the best and nicest place they have stayed on the island. Pictures alone do not do it justice. Please follow the link to our primary website to review guest comments, see more pictures, including interior pictures, and to make your reservations.
Somtara is a true lakehome. It offers direct beach access and is not across the road as some properties are. Also, unlike many island properties, the beach at Somtara is easily accessible. The views and sounds of Lake Superior abound at Somtara. From inside, the views and sounds are wonderful the entire length of this single level, ranch style home. From the family room, the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room, Lake Superior is right out the window. Further, there is a screened porch off the master bedroom and a large deck out front overlooking the lake.
Children are allowed and they love the outdoors, beach, dock and firepit, but the home is rather well appointed and more appropriate for adults. Still, the guest room is setup with two twin beds.

Up here – in my favorite cabin – with my four sisters. My oldest sister left the ocean front – California – to be here on the lake front for my 60th Birthday. We snowshoed and walked though there was icy conditions. We were all grateful to return to the cabin where it is warm and comfortable with all the amenities of home. We love the cabin and will return again together but possibly in warmer weather. Cooked great meals, made jigsaw puzzles, played cards, played a board game and ventured outside to make snow angels. GREAT FUN HAD BY ALL! Thank you Tom & Sara!
Our family had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend at the Somtara House. The location of the house was perfect - just a short drive to town/ferry/restaurants or to the State/Town Parks. The view of Lake Superior was beautiful from many rooms in the house and we enjoyed hearing the waves crashing on the shore at night. Our 3 girls (6, 10, 12) loved playing in the lake, looking for pretty rocks, exploring the shore, jumping over waves, eating lunch on the dock, making S'mores and driving to town to get ice cream.
The house was very clean, well-maintained and well-appointed and the pictures of the house on the internet really look exactly like what the house and scenery looks like in person.
We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to vacation. From a couple with no kids, to families with kids, everyone would find something unique and special about this house.
My only other comment, is that the lake shore is a bit rocky, so we recommend that you bring water shoes of some kind if you plan to go in the water. Our girls did an didn't have any problems.
Great clean home with a great view of the lake. A good adult getaway for quiet relaxation. There is a state park nearby for hiking and a small museum in town. A few restaurants that close early, at least in early June. There are not many opportunities for purchasing provisions, so come prepared with food and outdoor gear.
Very quiet with so many places to choose from for sitting and relaxing. Morning coffee in the bright family room with a view of the lake, get a little sun on the dock, rest on the beach, move up to the deck with a cold drink, when the flies start bugging you you can move onto the screened porch, and at night -when the wind is a little nippy - you can sit in the living room with a nice fire in the fireplace. We enjoyed our stay very much.
We have stayed at several places on Madeline Island but I have to say that this location has everything you could possibly want in an island rental. Location is perfect and private. The views from the house and deck are just as nice as from the beach and dock. Accommodations are top notch too...there's nothing better than falling asleep in a comfy bed to the sound of Lake Superior waves. Plus, you can cook on the beach in the firepit, use the grill just off deck, or simply the stove (cause it did rain one day). You may find cheaper places to stay on the island but it would be hard to find one with everything this one offers. It's worth it!
Hi, Tom, we enjoyed our 2 night stay mostly for the view, the fire pit, the serenity… the house was exactly as we expected except for the lack of water/water pressure. When one person was running a bath in the master bath (no shower head in the master bath) another could not take a shower in the hall bath because NO water came out of the shower head (I think the kitchen sink wouldn't work either). Unfortunately this really did make our stay a bit lack luster… scheduling showers/baths was not easy because we had a full itinerary. I hope you fix this problem!!!! I'm sure your return visitors would appreciate it! (A shower head in the master bath might be appreciated by most also). I did report this problem to Debby via a voice message in case the water pump is simply not working correctly.
At the End of the Island, on the Gravel Road, Chippewa Trail.
