This cozy cottage is located on the beatiful South Lubec Sand Beach. Guests will delight in having complete beach priviliges, including your very own bonfires (firewood is available free of charge). Panoramic views of Campobello Island and West Quoddy Head are the backdrop to an eye pleasing experience. Sunrise is exquisite! Visit historical sites and enjoy the local fare. Shopping, hiking, birdwatching, whale excursions, sea kayaking, and golf are just a short distance away. Try fresh seafood in local restaurants or cook your own over an open fire on the beach. Clams, lobster, mussels, crab, scallops, all can be purchased locally.
The South Lubec Sand Bar is known world wide for its unique migratory bird species. Tidal flux inters into an open marshland supporting habitat for hundreds of endangered bird and plant species. Bald eagles soar overhead. The lower end of the sand bar is governed by the State of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Low tide (25-28 foot tidal flux) offers visitors a chance to forage for small crustaceans among the exposed seaweed encrusted rocks, or to build sandcastles in the wet sand. High tide allows those who are hearty souls a chance to swim (water temp during the summer months is 40 - 50 degrees)!
Walking the semi-private mile-long sand beach is an adventure everyone should experience.
Paul and I lived in this beautiful rental cottage only for one year and a half. My Mother, Evelyn, became very ill and passed in 2003. During this time, we moved back to the farm, which is located adjacent from the cottage. We own riding horses, and are currently raising Irish Sport Horses. Our first filly was born this year.
Paul and I also maintain a large vegetable garden.
We are originally from Lubec.
Debra Olson purchased this cottage in 2001
The cottage is small but beautiful. The surrounding area, especially the beach, offers so much! The extreme tides are absolutely breathtaking. A beach fire at dusk or dark, the sound of the waves lapping the shore, or the overhead stars, just soothes the soul.
fire wood for bon-fires on the beach is included in the rental price.
This cottage in Lubec Maine is the best in the area. All the homes in this scenic town have water views. The beach access is what separates this property from the rest of them. Here, all you have to do open the front door and walk across the yard to the beach. Many of the other houses require a walk or drive to beach access. The house is furnished intelligently. It's dressed in beach apparel but everything is dog proof and user friendly. If you need anything to make your stay better, the owner lives across the street and is happy to accommodate.
The house has everything anyone could ask for. A big kitchen, washing machine and dryer, coffee maker and plenty of beach towels. There is a TV and DVD player but we didn't use them. The WiFi didn't work when we arrived but we didn't say anything to the owner. We were there to be with friends, family and the dog and not email or texts. Secondly, by the time you're done hiking, swimming, boating, running and exploring all you want to do when you get home is bathe in the hot shower and curl up in bed.
There were a few things we learned about this area that made us fall in love with it. The town is next to the Bay of Fundy and the tide change is something everyone should see. High and low tide here is no laughing matter and beaches at your doorstep will disappear and reappear within 12 hours. Lubec is a small town with very few but great restaurants. All of them have limited hours and selection but we never had a bad meal. If state parks and natural beauty is your thing, this is your place. The scenery is breathtaking and not overrun with tourists and busses like Acadia.
Although the weather was unseasonably cool we enjoyed every minute at this wonderful house. It is cosy and comfortable and has everything you need to spend time on the Maine coast. Had no trouble with cell phone and the Internet was high speed. Walked on the beach at high tide, low tide and everything in between ! Beds were comfortable and kitchen is well stocked. BTW the dogs were also very happy! Thanks Deb.
As the other reviewers stated, the photos do not do this property justice. House was immaculate and had everyt hing you need. It's a perfect spot if you want to relax. Cell phone service not great...but didn't mind as we were there to get away. Wi-Fi in the house worked fine. The beach was so close and had a lot to offer. Get up early and walk down to the beach for sunrise....amazing. A birder's paradise...Bald Eagles flying by, Singing Warblers and Sparrows, nesting Cedar Waxwings and Cliff Swallows...so cool. We found downtown Lubec very charming, which is a short drive. Northern Tides Art Gallery & Gift Shop downtown has a really nice selection of high quality locally made items. Check out the Saturday a.m. Farmer's market in Lubec. Bring your passport and visit Campobello Island just over the bridge.
It was a perfect vacation spot and can't wait to go back.
If you are planning to stay in the Lubec area, this is THE place you'll want. A clean, fresh, fully-furnished and supplied two-bedroom house in the hottest spot by the ocean, right by the road that allows you to drive out into the bay at low tide. About equidistant from town and Quoddy Head State Park, which you'll want to visit several times if you enjoy hiking (best trails in the area). The owners were super kind and helped us out with local information and some extra tools, as well as supplying firewood for a reserved spot by the beach with benches and table. The ocean is visible right from the living room and bedroom windows, and you can enjoy brief (cold!) dips and get back home in under a minute. Also clamming, mussels, sand castles at low tide, searching sea glass, shells and ocean rock, fresh air! The house itself is nicer than the pictures convey, and included wireless internet and a half-dozen HBO channels, plus full cable. Relaxing is the word!
The pictures of this property do not do it justice. The house was charming amd very clean and inviting. I and three others had a relaxing and wonderful week's vacation. ( Be forewarned that if you are a Verizon customer with your phones, there is very little coverage in the area.) There is plenty to do, be it touring lighthouses, whale watching trips, checking out gift shops or just walking the beach collecting rocks before having a bonfire! Did I mention having fresh lobster whenever you want it? (The chocolate shop in downtown Lubec also provides fresh lobster by order!) I would recommend this property to anyone!
The cottage was at a great location, not far from town and activities such as whale watching, kayaking, biking, and hiking at the West Quoddy Lighthouse. On our whale watching trip we saw a Minke whale breaching 1 1/2miles is a rare site and Finback Whale. We loved spending frequent time on the beach and going out on the sand barge at low tide. The cottage was very clean with space for four people. You may not be able to use your cell phone in the local area except for emergencies, since the tower is in Canada. The internet is not wireless, and there wasn't a wire to connect, but check if owner obtained a wire. Deb was very helpful when I called. We highly recommend Uncle Kippy's if your looking for the best fish and great service. Cohill's is more a bar then a restaurant. I have recommended the cottage to co-workers.
Cottage is aprox. 2 miles from the West Quoddy Head State Park. Wonderful
hiking trails with excellent ocean views.
