About The Owner

Bear Den South is owned by Paul and Liz Johnson from Cincinnati, OH. We love our Tennessee home and neighbors. We are both business owners in Cincinnati and love to get away. We love to spend time with our large family, ride our motorcycles, boating and travel.

The Owner purchased this house in 2009

Why The Owner chose Tennessee

Once you see the great view of Cherokee Lake you will fall in love with the lake and house like we did. We chose this location due to the beautiful views and easy access to miles of uncrowded water. It is a great location for short trip to the Great Smokey Mountains, Gatlinburg, Dollywood, and Knoxville. A two hour trip to Ashville, N.C. and the Biltmore Estates all places we like to go either with the family or on the motorcycles. If you like to ride motorcycles there are several scenic routes from the house to the Great Smokey and Cherokee Mountains.

What makes this house unique

Our family loves to boat, jet ski, kayak and swim in the clear water. We love the ability to float in the relaxation station or play in the water. There is also year round fishing on Cherokee Lake. If you are a marathon walker or runner, we have hills to walk and all of the neighbor hoods are linked by streets. There is also access to the state wide bike scenic route.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house was great!!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful, well organized, and very clean. The view of the lake from the deck was amazing!!! The house is large and has a great layout, there was plenty of room for everyone. Fishing was good from the dock out back, access was easy. There is a launch area close by so if you have a boat getting it to the water should be pretty easy. There is a paddle boat, sea kayaks, and relaxation station for lake fun and relaxation! This is a great place to stay, for lake fun, fishing, and is only 50 minutes from Pigeon Forge.

Great home for family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 12 from Kentucky and North Carolina met half way in Rutledge, TN at Bear Den South. We spent 4 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. This property met all of our needs for the weekend. The kitchen was extremely well stocked with utensils, dishes, and appliances. We cooked several large meals without difficulty. The dining table was wonderful because it easily seated all 12 of us for a meal. The family room views are just breathtaking, and of course the views from the deck are as well. The wood burning fireplace was in working order and we enjoyed having a fire two nights. We did not use the fire pit due to a burn ban in the area. The property was one of the cleanest properties I have ever rented. Though the decorating in some areas is very dated, everything is in tip top shape. Clean, recently painted, etc. The bathrooms were exceptionally clean, which always makes a traveler happy! There were plenty of clean linens (sheets, towels, etc) but I would recommend that if you don't want to be delayed in your departure, to take your own, since you are required to wash and dry everything you use before you leave the property. The lake level was quite low due to the winter level established by the Tennessee Valley Authority but it made it easy to take long walks around the lake. We were even befriended by a deer who walked out of the woods and followed us for two hours, allowing us to stroke his head at one point! WiFi was available, but if everyone is using devices it is not strong enough to support. We drove to Panther Creek State Park, about 30 minutes away and did hiking trails. One group drove to Pigeon Forge (about 1 hour) on Black Friday and spent the day shopping. The house is easy to find. Most of our group drove in after dark, and we were able to navigate without a problem. We would definitely consider renting this property again! The owner was easy to work with and always returned emails in a timely manner. This is obviously a well maintained family get-away home that others will cherish as well!

Family Gathering in Grainger County

  • 5 of 5

We are two brothers and three sisters along with our spouses that make a point to spend a long weekend together twice a year. We've stayed in many VRBO rentals as well as others and with us the Bears Den rates right at the top. The five bedrooms and three bathrooms worked out just perfect for our large family. The view from the upstairs sitting area and from the upper deck is wonderful and afforded a perfect place to gather and relax.

Everything we needed to enjoy the deck; chairs, cushions, shade, was all provided. We even used the kayak and dock for a few relaxing hours. The dining table is one of the few where we could all ten sit comfortably and there was even spaces left over. Kitchen had every utensil and cooking appliance we needed to enjoy our pancakes and sausage along with any other meal we wished to prepare.

We have ancestors from Grainger County so we knew what one day of our activities would be. We drove over the county looking at old homesteads and cemeteries. The countryside is just lovely. On the second day we thought we might drive over to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg but the Bears Den was so comfortable we just laid around enjoying the facilities provided and watched our favorite football games. One of our best gatherings.

It is a beautiful, spacious, place for a large family group.

Great Family Memories

  • 5 of 5

We were all very pleased with our stay at Bear Den South. The pictures do not do it justice as they can't show how spacious the home is. There were nine people in our party and we had plenty of room. We had great views of the Smokey mountains and beautiful Cherokee Lake. The kitchen is well equipped and I had fun using the variety of dishes. There were also supplies on hand which was very nice. Little things mean a lot like plenty of trash bags, toilet paper, towels, blankets, pillows, cooking items, lots of movies to watch, and kitchen essentials (salt, pepper, baking powder, etc.) All the beds were very comfortable. Also, the kids had plenty of rafts to play on, plus life jackets galore which they used all week. The water is deep and clean and not weedy. We rented a pontoon boat for a day from Cardinal Cove which was close to the house and convenient. Other side trips were a day in Gatlinburg and an afternoon at Panther Creek State Park (welcome center is closed on Wednesday). We also found a vegetable stand nearby with some good Grainger tomatoes. It was just a wonderful time for our family and at the end I had a big hug from my youngest grandchild who said "thanks for bringing me to Tennessee and also for our great home!" I can say anyone who stays here will not be disappointed.
