Charming Country Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted by Carole and Kevin and invited in for tea while their cleaning lady was finishing up (we were early). They made us feel right at home and gave us a little history on the property. A little later that evening as I was fixing dinner, a donkey came looking in the window! There were two of them grazing in a little pasture area on the back side of the cottage - you could feed them right at the window (a donkey drive- thru)! That was not the end of the animal fun...They have two very sweet dogs (Walter and Sally), chickens, and two ducks. So much fun watching all the animal shenanigans! If you go be sure to ask Kevin the story of the donkey requisition.

The cottage was very comfortable, clean, and cozy - it had everything that you would need. We had a fire in the wood stove on the second night and fell asleep to the sound of...quiet!

Carole and Kevin were very gracious hosts and helpful with activity suggestions and places to go. Really enjoyed my chats with Kevin about his very interesting life - what fun!

Best little cottage in Ireland

  • 5 of 5

I cannot express in words how utterly charming this cottage is and how totally awesome Carole and Kevin Clarke are! I wanted to travel to Ireland and Scotland one day and this year was that day. I was nervous traveling with just me and my boys to a foreign, although very quaint and somewhat American like, country. I was so pleasantly surprised to be greeted with such hospitality! This is an adorable little cottage nestled in the heart of the countryside not very far from some very exciting castles and villages. All that I had planned to do was quickly changed when Carole and I talked about the heritage and true magic of Ireland. That can really only be found among the people who live there and the villages surrounding the attractions. The people are so friendly and hospitable. Kevin and my boys spent many a night during our stay sitting at the fire sharing stories and talks. I joined them at times and others I enjoyed Carole's company while she helped me to plan day trips to Holy Island, the Cliffs of Moher, Limerick and King John's Castle, as well as Bunratty Castle and Foulk Park. The Clarke's are genuinely willing to help you see all that you can throughout your stay. We enjoyed their two pups, Walter and Sally and also the chickens and ducks that are all around. My younger son enjoyed collecting eggs for Kevin and Carole each morning. I am very thankful that I chose this cottage and that I now have two wonderful friends in the Clarke's that I plan to visit again hopefully in the near future. If you are looking for a quaint, adorable, hospitable and genuine experience in Ireland, stay at the Gamekeepers Cottage with Carole and Kevin Clarke. See you all again soon! Miss you both and I'm looking forward to our next chat!!

Living the Irish life

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, and our daughter, son-in-law and toddler grandson, enjoyed a wonderful week in Ireland--and Kevin and Carole and the Gamekeeper's Cottage were a big part of that. The site is charming and Carole and Kevin could not be more welcoming. They are so kind, and are full of information about sites and history. Their restaurant and pub suggestions were absolutely spot-on. We felt as if we had just come to visit family. It is an exceptional place to stay.

Whitegate charms again

  • 5 of 5

So happy to have been able to return to this wonderful place. The house, the grounds, the hosts - Kevin and Carole Clarke - are all special indeed. Steeped in history and set along the beautiful lake, it was a fantastic visit. Don't miss the castle of Portumna just a half hour drive away. This is Ireland the way i hoped to see it. Thanks to the Clarkes for creating a place so warm with welcome and so lovely to be in.

Incredible stay - 6 stars!

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 5 nights at the Gamekeeper's Cottage and were truly sad to leave! Four of us, two couples, rented the cottage, which was perfect for us. Only one bathroom, but sharing was not really a problem. The whole place was very comfortable, well decorated and well equipped. However, the best part of the experience was the hosts, Carole and Kevin. They made us feel as if we were staying with close friends and family in the country. We got invaluable recommendations from them for day trip planning and they assisted us with local restaurants and attractions. We also enjoyed their dogs, Walter and Sally, and the entire rural vibe. Although this was our first trip to Ireland, I truly believe that this was an Irish experience that will never be matched (unless we go stay with them again)!

Very old charming stone built cottage. Tastefully decorated with stunning hunting trophies.

  • 5 of 5

I can't express how wonderful our stay was. Carol and Kevin are amazing. They have great stories to tell by a cup of tea or a cold beer. They are very welcoming and helpful finding directions or suggesting places to go or eat. The property has stunning views of the rolling hills and mountains of Ireland. We loved seeing all the farm land and animals as well. The house was very close to a small food store in whitegate and the kitchen had all the pots and pans to cook up breakfasts and lunches. After our stay my wife and I knew would be heading back and hopefully will be staying with Carol and Kevin again in a year or two. I highly suggest staying here.
