This home is perfect for a relaxed ski getaway with friends or family. Recently renovated, the house is on a wooded acre three miles from the base of Stratton Mountain, one of southern Vermont's best ski resorts. Just seven miles in the other direction is Bromley Mountain, a wonderful family ski mountain that converts to an alpine adventure park in summer.
Enter at the ground floor into a mudroom with radiant floors, so kids and adults can shed snowy gear. Also on that floor: four bedrooms, laundry and one full bath. One bedroom has a king bed, one has a full, one has a full and a twin, and one has a set of bunkbeds plus a twin, plus a trundle under the bottom bunk.
Upstairs, find an open layout with kitchen, large dining table that seats 8, living area with fireplace, reading area and another full bath. Behind double sliding doors is a rec room with ping pong, a TV monitor, and lots of kids games. For kids, there is a trampoline outside, as well as a sledding hill in the backyard. The house has a lovely view of Stratton Mountain from the deck, which has a gas grill, Adirondack chairs and picnic table.
Driving distances from the house are 10 minutes to Stratton village and lifts; 10 minutes to Bromley lifts and lodge; 15 minutes to Magic Mountain; 20 minutes to the town of Manchester. Okemo and Killington are about a 45-minute and one-hour drive, respectively, up Route 100.
We are a family of five living in New York City and spending as many winter weekends as we can in Vermont. Our kids grew up skiing at Bromley and Stratton, and now we ski all over the state, including Jay Peak in April every year.
Pam Frederick purchased this house in 1964
My father built this house as a bachelor ski pad in the mid-'60s; we renovated it in the '00s to fit two families. It is an easy house to maintain, fully carpeted wall-to-wall for winter comfort, and with radiant floors in the bathrooms and mudroom, which is a great bonus on cold mornings. The living space is upstairs with great views of Stratton and an open plan that makes socializing with families especially fun.
This house is ideal for one bigger family, or two couples with a couple kids each. We have also had renters who enjoying bringing grandparents or friends who don't ski, since it's a lovely place to spend the day if you choose not to hit the slopes.
thoroughly enjoyed it and all it was billed to be. very comfortable. we'd use it again.
Our home is on a wooded acre, about two miles from the small village of Bondville, at the base of Stratton Mountain -- a wonderful ski and summer resort. The house is also just seven miles from Bromley Mountain, a great family ski mountain that converts to an alpine adventure park in the summer.
For cross-country skiers, Stratton offers a nordic center at its Sun Bowl area; the Wild Wings Cross Country ski center is about seven miles away in Peru. Hildene -- Robert Todd Lincoln's historic home in Manchester -- also offers ski touring in the winter.
In the town of Bondville, you will find the basics: ATM, gas, two convenience stores, several ski shops, and about another mile south, a pizza parlor and gourmet cheese and beer shop. About eight miles away in Londonderry is a well-stocked grocery store -- Clark's -- as well as gas, hardware, a diner, etc.
The town of Manchester -- about 13 miles south -- is an outlet-store mecca, and also has several worthwhile restaurants, including Gringo Jack's and The Perfect Wife. We also love Al Ducci's for Italian take-out, and Mother Myrick's for chocolate. There is also a movie theater, and one of the best independent book stores in the northeast: The Northshire.
In summer, we frequent several swimming holes: Hapgood Pond in Peru, Emerald Lake in Dorset, the Stratton snowmaking pond on the mountain, Grout Pond in the town of Stratton, and one of the area's best features: the Manchester Recreation Center, which has not only a great pool, but tennis courts, playground, baseball diamonds and a skate park. On weekends, Stratton operates its gondola to the top of the mountain, which gives you access to a short hike to the Stratton fire tower. Stratton and Bromley are part of both the Long Trail and the Appalacian Trail, and there are dozens of spectacular hikes within 15 miles of the house.
For golfers, Stratton Mountain and The Equinox in Manchester boast well-respected courses.
