Since then, the house has been completely restored offering the finest elements of the 21st century with the charm, colors, textures and décor of true New Mexico including hand plastered walls, Kiva fireplaces, vintage rugs and the artwork of local artists.

You can hear the waters of the Rio Pueblo and listen to Coyote’s gathering in the evening. The neighborhood horses and one donkey can be heard calling to each other and occasionally one might hear the bells from the church down the lane. This is not your ordinary impersonal vacation rental. About Melissa Howden

I am an artist / writer / filmmaker / producer. I work and live primarily in California but love my home in New Mexico where my parents and grandparents from both sides were born and raised. When I am in Taos I spend time improving the garden, season by season, skiing and horseback riding, I also get some of my most important creative work done in the house which seems especially conducive to creative thought and activity. I am usually found with my co-pilot Dot, a 15-year-old Jack Russell Terrier.

Melissa Howden purchased this house in 2007

Why Melissa Howden chose New Mexico

Taos is a special place of many stories. History is rich here, and the journey of each visitor under the vast canopy of sky adds another layer to the richness of the place. Experience Taos for yourself. You will be changed and fulfilled. Northern New Mexico also has two generations of family history for me, so when the opportunity came to care for this house and restore it, I jumped at the chance. I did not purchase this house as a vacation rental as much as this house chose me. I purchased it as a home. I was able to live in Taos for two years but economic conditions and work called me back to the big city, for now.

What makes this house unique

A pleasant 15-20 minute walk past horses, alfalfa fields and through back lanes to Taos Historic Plaza, shops and galleries, this is a home you will want to return to year after year. Taos is a year round destination offering breathtaking views, intriguing history and intimate privacy making for the ultimate relaxing and healing getaway. Unlike many vacation rentals I supply everything except your food. The woodpile is continuously stocked, the propane for the grill, organic linens and soap, even robes. If you are a special person or family looking for a special Taos experience, Casa Betita is the place.

Perfect Honeymoon In Taos!!!

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I love NM and love to ski, hike etc... So we planned our honeymoon in Taos. I have visited Taos a few times before and stayed in vrbo listings that were adequate. When we walked into Casa Betita we were shocked at how beautiful and perfectly decorated it was and how we immediately felt right at home. My husband jokes that it was like walking into a museum of Taos :) A note and a bottle of champagne were left on the counter for us to enjoy! I could go on and on! Don't rent anything else! Casa Betita is a one of a kind GEM that we didn't want to leave!!!! THANK YOU so much Melissa for making our first week as a married couple so memorable and absolutely PERFECT! We look forward to returning soon with family and renting Casa Betita!!!

wonderful stay with 2 dogs

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have stayed in several vacation rentals in and around Taos - and this house is TOPS. Amazing yard for our dogs to cruise, gorgeous adobe inside, so cozy and private. Really well stocked kitchen - as well as the rest of the house. We will return to this one for sure!

Amazing place!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Betita! My husband and I travel extensively and frequently stay in rental places. Casa Betita ranks among our most favorite experiences. The house is a beautiful old New Mexican adobe but updated to include all the modern comforts. The entire property is very peaceful and very much promotes a spirit of relaxation and reflection. The indoor spaces are full of natural light and decorated in a tasteful manner. The bed and furnishings are of very high quality, very comfortable. We loved all of the outdoor spaces too - there are patio spaces on 3 sides of the house, so sun or shade is always an option. The hot tub was impeccably clean. The location is quite peaceful and just close enough for a stroll into Taos. In fact, we enjoyed walking into Taos and were happy to find that Uber service has reached this town so we could get a lift home after dinner. Overall, this was an outstanding place to stay. We will hope to be back soon!

IN LOVE WITH CASA BETITA!

  • 5 of 5

We were excited about the opportunity to write about Casa Betita! Our wonderful experience there defies description. It is a secluded 100 year old restored adobe house, set among the biggest willow trees we have ever seen and full of surprises and character. The house inside and out embodies a serene, peaceful and relaxing spirit . Melissa’s collections of rugs, books, music, dishes reflects the true Taos history and energy. The wonderful kitchen is equipped for the gourmet chef and baker, who enjoy cooking and eating like us! It meets your needs with the intention of spoiling you!

We especially enjoyed the huge raised deck adjoining the hot tub and fire pit, where we gazed at the huge Milky Way and constellations, sipping a glass of wine, followed by a soak in the lovely deep footed tub, and river rock lined shower. Towels and linens were new and fresh, and the robes were a treat. We looked forward to getting out of bed and putting our feet on the warm heated floors.

Tucked into a secuded setting, but so close to Taos Plaza, as well as easy access to the ski area and places north, make this home a great location.

Casa Betita is a magical house that was hard to leave, restored with love. You will enjoy every minute of your stay!

Fabulous house

  • 5 of 5

Casa Betita is a wonderful, conveniently located home -- carefully thought-out with meticulous attention to detail. We were there with my teenage son and his friend -- both avid snowboarders. The mountain is about a twenty or thirty-minute drive away, and downtown Taos is only a five minute drive. Cid's Market -- the local equivalent of Whole Foods is close by, as is Love Apple, which was our favorite restaurant in town.

The house itself is perfectly outfitted -- the kitchen is fully equipped for preparing meals. The art and decoration are tasteful and welcoming without being fussy. While it's only two bedrooms, they're very private and the house feels spacious. The bath in the master suite has a large soaking tub and opens to a patio and private yard with a garden. The beds are comfortable with plenty of extra bedding -- blankets, pillows, etc. There's a washer and dryer, a dishwasher -- everything you need for a wonderful vacation. In short, the house is ideal and the owner is very accomodating and prompt and thorough in her replies to emails. We're looking forward to returning to Taos and Casa Betita.

A superb home

  • 5 of 5

My wife, son, dog and I had a wonderful stay here. The home is beautiful and in a nice quiet location. There are many thoughtful touches for short term stays. The owner is very reliable and easy to deal with. We vacation in a lot of rental homes in a lot of different locations. This was one of the very best.
