Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Thank you to our guests over the past 7 years and your input for improvements. In the past couple years we have new docks, refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, coffee maker, gas grill and associated other beds, outside seating and decorations and continue to improve.

You will also notice not being able to automatically book. We have found that having a quick conversation helps both of us to answer any questions you may have, before making such a large commitment.

Enjoy your vacation at our lovingly restored Lake Front Turn of the Century Victorian Cottage on idyllic Silver Lake.

The Finger Lakes are comprised of 10 lakes, if there were 11; Silver Lake would be the extra pinkie on the Western End

Silver Lake is nestled in the rolling hills of Wyoming County, NY. The lake is 4 miles long, a mile wide and known for good fishing so don’t forget your poles

This cottage boasts 3 covered porches, plenty of outdoor dining and seating along with indoor & outdoor fireplaces. There is also a boat lift available if you bring your own boat (6.5' wide, 2,000 lb).

At Days end enjoy your favorite beverage watching the incredible Sunsets…no two are alike

An old fashion vacation with a step back in time

Although built around 1900, the home has been extensively rebuilt and restored, including all new bathrooms, kitchen, bar-room, 3 porches, indoor & outdoor fireplaces and refinished floors throughout.

A truly unique part of the ‘east’ side of the lake is the right of way 2+ mile walkway between the houses and lake, which until 40+ years ago had been a narrow guage railroad. This walkway takes you along the lake to the Silver Lake Institute, while getting to know the neighbors and and enjoying family time exercise.

Relax with an evening fire at one of the 2 fireplaces or with a bon fire lakeside with the portable firepit. Plenty of wood available.

Hope you like music, there is a great stereo on the 1st floor with 5 sets of speaker (3 outdoor), extensive (oldies) CD library and hookup for your ipod, iphone, ipad or other MP3 player. Additional surround sound system on 3rd floor.

All the bedrooms boast ceiling fans, along with the living room and bar room.

The ‘7th’ bedroom is actually the 3rd floor of the house we fondly refer to as: The Orphanage (also known as: Crow’s Nest, Adam’s Attic or Astro Lounge) Has 4 distinct areas, main room with large ‘L’ shaped couch and other seating, bed area with 4 'full size' beds creating a camp like setting, additional sitting area over looking the lake with large couch and 4 other chairs, and finally a full bath / shower. This area is a favorite with the kids (and sometimes the guys) to get away and enjoy the views and their own surround sound stereo.

We have renovated to be very family oriented, with the bedrooms, orphange, flow, porches, etc.. Until our renting this year, we also did not have a TV or internet (it's does now), and spent time catching up with family with games, music and enjoying what the house, community and area has to offer. It's been over 14 years and we have not tired of it, and is still a favorite for our families to gather, and hope it becomes one for your family too.

Dogs &/or cats must first discuss with owners, and if agreed there is a $50 fee per pet.

Please no event gatherings, due to close friendships and proximity to our neighbors.

Other Area Activities:

• Letchworth State Park – The Grand Canyon of the East: hiking, rafting, 3 gorgeous falls, Museum, Glen Iris Inn - 5 miles

About Susie

Our families are from both, Europe (Holland & England) and the mid west (Michigan / Ohio), but we are both born in the US. Susie is one of 3 children, with many extended family across the mid west and the Silver Lake area. Tim is one of 9, mostly in the mid Atlantic, New England and Seattle areas, but there is a straggler that bounces between England and China (we still don't know what he does). The family continues to grow, both in the US and Europe, with the cottage as a great gathering spot.

We have lived in many areas, but call our ''work' home in the NYC metro area and upstate NY our want to be home.

Susie purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Susie chose New York

We had visited Silver Lake for many years, grew to love the area and people and ultimately purchased the cottage. It had good bones, but had never really been substantially touched, good & bad. When first working with builders on improvement, they suggested 'urban renewal and put a torch to it', funny sense of humor they have. We actually hired the 'urban renewal' builders, and knew it was going to be a long term improvement plan. So we laid out general objectives, created annual plans and we were off. The majority of the work was done over about 8 years, but continued to stay and work during that time. If you stay, there are 7-8 mini photo albums showing before, during and after photo's, which we even marvel about what we were thinking when we got into it. It has become a family favorite, and look forward to using it for more weeks when we ever retire and if we ever have grand kids (ha ha). And yes, the 'urban renewal' guys are now good friends and continue with new improvements and fixing as needed.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage benefits for us, was first being with family nearby, and later more family & friends coming to visit. To us, the location is wonderful, great lake, west facing for sunsets and the ability to take long walks between the lake and cottages on what was an old railroad line, getting to know the neighbors. Having the cottage mostly untouched for over 100 years provided an opportunity to keep the old, with some new, that looks like old. Our newest favorites are the 2 fireplaces, inside & outside. The inside one, with a traditional arched look, stone facing and bluestone hearth & mantel is really a wood stove that can heat the entire cottage on chilly days in the early spring and late fall. Add all that with the 5 sets of speakers, 3 of them outside, great stereo and it's a place we never really want to leave. Why do we rent it? As with anything costs go up to maintain and taxes, but we were only there a handful of time a year and thought we would test the waters. Little did we know the great interest, and most important we now having many guests coming back year after year and booking into the future. More important is they feel and treat it like a home, which it is to us.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Tim and Susie,

Our family enjoyed our vacation week at your cottage. You have done a nice job renovating and blending the old with the new. There were wonderful gathering spaces and 'nooks and crannies' for some personal chill time, enough space for all. Good amenities and well stocked. Thank you.

So much more than expected !!!

  • 5 of 5

When looking for a place for our annual family gathering, we had never heard of Silver Lake, but the Sunset Cottage pulled our attention right away. From our initial contacts and long phone call with Susie who helped answer any questions till the day we left, we were excited to get there and hated to leave. Every part of the home was so special in keeping the old character while having modern conveniences and each room is like a new treasure to look around. With the lake, boats, daily walks along the lake and lounging on the 3 porches, deck and side patio with outside fireplace, you couldn't find a better setting for our family. We hope to come back for many years to come. Thank you Susie & Tim to opening up your lovely home to our family.

Wonderful large home right on the water and plenty of room to sleep three families of 4!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed Sunset Cottage! It has everything you need right at the house and all we needed to bring was food, drink and clothing. We caught fish off the dock daily and hiked nearby Letchworth Park. Perfect place for a large family or several smaller families!

Perfect gathering spot.

  • 5 of 5

We recently booked Tim and Susie's home for an extended weekend to gather family from all over the country for the occasion of our mother's funeral. To have time together in this lovely cottage on a picturesque lake was the perfect way to celebrate our mother's life. We gathered around a cozy fire to share pictures and memories, enjoyed great meals, got reacquainted with cousins at late night board games, and were even able to get in some hiking at Letchworth State park. The configuration of rooms and beds was perfect to accommodate a large diverse group of siblings, spouses, and young adult children. The cottage itself had so much to offer in terms of a well stocked kitchen, music CD's, games, books, great indoor/outdoor gathering spaces, and four full bathrooms. Tim and Susie were always helpful and quick with answers.

Although it was a sad occasion, we were very grateful to have this perfect spot to be together, rather than staying in a hotel.

Great place for a big group!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time staying at Sophie's Cottage. Plenty of room for all of us. The lake was beautiful and being able to use the canoe and kayaks was an added bonus. Plenty of places available to sit down on the dock and just enjoy the scenery. The area around Silver Lake in New York State is beautiful. We traveled each day to different state parks and hiked the trails and also went to Niagara Falls. We had a great week. Everything at the cottage was ready for us when we arrived and we received our deposit back in just a short time. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to all stay together.

Another Week of Family Fun at the Lake

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented the house for a week late last summer for our kids and grandkids to have some family time together to relax and have fun. It was a great time so we rented the same week again this summer. We were not disappointed and everyone had a wonderful time. The house itself is perfect for our large group of kids and grandkids, with plenty of bedrooms for all. The older kids especially enjoy the "orphanage" on the third floor where they can have some space of their own. The adults enjoy that too :-) The main floor is roomy as well with plenty of space for all. On our one rainy day we all relaxed in the family room watching videos on Netflix and were very comfortable. Even a rainy day at the lake is a good day! Much of our time was spent though either out on the lake itself, or enjoying the very large deck on the back of the house, watching the kids play or just rocking in a chair and enjoying the view. At night after the kids were in bed the adults all had a wonderful time relaxing with a drink in front of the outdoor fireplace. A great way to unwind and relax after a busy day of chasing little ones. The house as always had every amenity we could need, is wonderfully maintained and clean and offers everything a family could wish for to enjoy some relaxing family time enjoying the "lake life". Can't wait to come again!!

Great view of the lake. Swimming area is wonderful for children. Home was clean and equipped nicely for our group of 12. We definitely want to return to this cottage. Homeowner was very helpful with instructions. There are many nearby activities for families with children. WE definitely would recommend this cottage to our friends.
