About the property

CLUB MONTECCHIO( is located centrally in Tuscany, within easy reach of the main 'must see' destinations of Siena(20mins drive), Florence, San Gimignano, Arezzo, Cortona, Montepulciano and Montalcino(all around an hour). Further afield, but still easily accessed by autotstrada/highway are Pisa, Perugia, Orvieto, Bologna and even Rome.

What's more the Chianti Way(Chiantigiana) runs right past the Villa Arceno estate's front door, leading up into the Chianti, and all it's famous wineries(Felsina, San Felice, Brolio, Capannelle, Badia e Coltibuono, Castello di Ama etc), as well as picturesque towns such as Gaiole, Radda, Panzano, Greve etc.

But there is no need to roam afar, as Club Montecchio is surrounded by many beautiful and historic hillside villages, all worth visiting, and usually with bars and good restaurants.

Mainly because we want you to feel, from your first contact, as though you "belong",; the way you would in your favourite restaurant, or a members club. But also be ause area has so much to offer, that we hope guests want to visit more than once. Plus we offer so much more than a regular 'self catering' rental: "home from home" luxury, with lots of extras & treats. More detail on our own website

Our 'FULLY INCLUSIVE' weekly RATES cover: complimentary WELCOME DINNER at our favourite osteria, a huge WELCOME HAMPER of speciality foods & wines from top local suppliers(more than enough for the first weekend's catering needs), PLUS UNLIMITED FREE Club Montecchio HOUSE WINE throughout your stay. Our FREE COCKTAIL BAR of branded spirits and local liqueurs is also kept stocked during your stay.

Our 5 star CONCIERGE SERVICE, provided by local boutique hoteliers, helps with everything from booking the best restaurants, to fixing a cookery class, or even a massage onsite at Club Montecchio! More detail on our own website

ALL ENERGY COSTS are included - very expensive in Italy! ; all linens & towels are included(inc pool) with cleaning and change of linens every 3-4 days, and at end of stay; we provide bathrobes and a continuous supply of Fragonard bathroom toiletries and daily consumables (everything from dishwasher tablets to Club Montecchio's own Olive Oil!).

Indoor & Outdoor Games available, as well as Pool Toys for the Large Pool (19m x 6m , shared, open 01/05-31/09), in addition to DVD, Video & CD libraries offering a wide choice, and FREE High Speed WIFI.

The result, we think, is a truly comfortable vacation villa, that really feels like 'Home From Home', from the moment that you walk through the front door. We hope that you will be tempted to come and judge for yourselves!

Wonderful property - hope to stay there again!

  • 5 of 5

Initially I thought the property was too far out from civilization but came to find that it was very conveniently located to a few lovely towns and not far at all from many wineries in the area. We had two couples (4 people) staying in the property which was perfect, though the villa would also be fine for 6 people. All needs were met by the property owner, concierge and property manager on a very timely basis and in a complete manner. I would be pleased to stay at this property again and would recommend it without hesitation to any friends or other travelers in the region.

Owner's Response: Club Montecchio is ideally located to enjoy the full range of what Tuscany offers - breathtaking scenery in the Chianti Hills, easy access to famous name and “must see” cities(Siena, Florence, Cortona, San Gimignano, Pisa and even Rome), and top wineries and outstanding restaurants juxtaposed with villages which offer insights into daily Tuscan life. And as Michael experienced, our complimentary 5 star experienced Concierge can handle the most discerning guests’ needs in planning an itinereary, and making last minute adjustments, to accomodate new thoughts. Our full time onsite housekeeper also offers the type of support and assistance that comes only with experience - she has been with us for 15 years. The combination of all of 5he above makes Club Montecchio the ideal choice fort travellers wanting to enjoy Tuscany, whether for the first time, or return visits aimed at getting “under the surface”. Do come back Michael, you will be most welcome!

In six weeks of touring Tuscany, no place we stayed exceeded Club Montecchio! The Club is everything you would want. James Benfield said that he wanted a place where you could feel at home. Well thought out amenities that go so far to provide you with an enjoyable experience. It is not glitzy. It is a country place. But a country place that makes life satisfying and enjoyable. It is in the country less than a 30 minute drive from Sienna

The road leading into Montecchio is where the adventure begins. You turn off the paved highway and are soon provided with an avenue of 300 year old cypress trees. If you thought the entrance to Terra in “Gone with the Wind” was special, then you will appreciate this avenue. At the end of the avenue of cypress trees is a turn around that would have been used by carriages in ancient days with young, courting Tuscan couples.

Then you continue on (remember, the roads are all dirt or gravel at this point) until you reach the villa.

When we arrived we found that the refrigerator had been stocked with enough food to keep us going for several days. Not only that, there was Prosecco, and several other wines.

How often have you come to a place that says: “if you need more wine, leave the empty bottles outside the door and we will provide you with more”. There was also an excellent selection of liquor. That is the kind of place Montecchio is. The refrigerator was stocked, and so was the larder. An excellent (big!) wedge of local Parmesan cheese, fruits, spaghetti sauce, pasta, everything you need to enjoy yourself and never leave the house if you don’t want to.

The villa sits on top of a rise and in the morning the views are wonderful. The grounds are immaculately maintained.

Parking is under a beautiful pergola. It was plenty big enough for our mini van to fit under.

There is a wonderful arbor with a table and chairs to enjoy outdoor meals.

Inside where all the comforts of home. They provided an ironing board, heated towel racks, wonderful shower and bathroom facilities, bidets, coffee makers, range and oven, you name it, it was there.

In out unit the “gathering room” was upstairs. It had a fireplace with wood provided. And, on Wednesday when Christina came to clean midweek, she restocked the wood for the fireplace! They think of everything.

You must stay here! We loved it! The rate for what you get is outstanding, especially if you compare it to a hotel.

Wonderful Villa in a great location in the heart of the Chianti region

  • 5 of 5

This is an upscale property located on top of a hill within a private estate community with an expansive outdoor yard and patio, affording gorgeous views. The villa is beautifully appointed and comes with a generous welcome basket filled with thoughtful goodies to help you settle in for your stay. Rita the concierge, provided us with wonderful options and made all of our reservations for several excellent wine tours and gave us great suggestions for other things to do. This is such a nice service offering when coming to to new region that you are not familiar with. Cristina the housekeeper also did a great job checking in with us and changing the bed linings and towels mid week. James the owner is a gracious host. He went out of his way to contact us before, during and after our stay to make sure that everything was to our liking and also provided valuable insights on places to go and things to do during our stay. The location is perfect. Not only is the property in a beautiful spot but it is a 10 minute drive to three medieval villages with nice restaurants and wonderful views. We loved this villa and would highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: The Partridges and their friends were a joy to work with both ahead of, and during their stay at Club Montecchio. They had done their research about where and what they wanted to see, but welcomed the opportunity to finesse their itinerary with our suggestions for better wineries, and the best local restaurants. It is a joy for us when guests allow myself and Rita, our Concierge to give the benefit of our up to date local knowledge and contacts, to make sure guests have amazing experiences, whether winery tours, special places or the hottest local restaurants. We aim for real “home from home” luxury and comfort from the moment guests arrive(the Welcome Hamper means no need to rush out to the store!), and it is hugely rewarding when guests notice the effort we put in. Thank you Beverly & Bill

Absolutely the loveliest property!

  • 5 of 5

There are not enough superlative words to describe how perfect this property is. The location is in the midst of one of the loveliest areas of Tuscany. The owners, James and Penny, are gracious, responsive and never intrusive. The housekeeper, Cristina, keeps the property immaculate. The concierge, Rita, is wonderfully helpful with any requests.

We especially loved the living room and the views from the windows...the sunrise will take your breath away. The bedrooms were roomy with plenty of closet space and the beds were all extremely comfortable. The bathrooms were all updated and very, very clean. The kitchen is very large...we spent a lot of time there cooking and eating...and has everything one might need.

We cannot thank you enough, James, Penny, Rita and Cristina, for making this visit truly memorable!

P.S. Dinner at Osteria alla Villa with Rodolfo is not to be missed! We ate there our first night and had to return on our last night because it was so wonderful.

Owner's Response: It is so rewarding when guests are charming, and gracious enough to notice the effort that goes in to ensuring they have an enjoyable stay. As Pat says, we are blessed with a location on the highest point of a magical private wine estate, in the most beautiful part of the Chianti Hills, which gives us a great head start. Then we work on the basics, and cleanliness is the most important of all. It is a joy that guests notice what a great job Cristina, our full time housekeeper(onsite daily) does in this regard. Rita, our professional Concierge, is available from the moment guests book, to help pre-plan guest itineraries, and secure bookings for the best restaurants(often small) and most exclusive wine tours(often difficult to get into). Our "welcome dinner" was a very successful trial this year, and will become part of our standard package of extras for all guests in 2018. Thank you Pat, Jeff, Barbara & Tom!

A 5 Star Home from home!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about L’Oliveto makes you relax as soon as you walk through the garden gate. Incredibly well-equipped and very well cared for and in beautiful surroundings. Great restaurants nearby and lots of wonderful towns and cities to visit.

Hosts are very generous - free wine and drinks tray, regular sheet changes, a humongous welcome basket and all the basics regularly restocked (include nespresso pods). Would love to say it’s horrid so no-one else goes and we can keep it for ourselves!! We’ll be back

Hope to see you again soon Jody!

First Class!

  • 5 of 5

Club Monteccio is simply idyllic; we enjoy it so much that we have visited several years in a row.

It offers beautiful 360 degree views of the Tuscan rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves. The villa with its charming traditional architecture, stunning pool and exceptional facilities (including reliable and fast wifi so my daughter could still get her fix of Netflix!) was perfect for our family's break.

The nearby village of Villa a Sesta is gastronomic heaven where you can enjoy Michelin rated food at La Bottega del 30 or chianti classico and bistecca alla fiorentina at Villa di Sotto - it doesn't get much better!

Owner's Response: Thank you Paul! We love returning guestd, and tge fact that you have mow come back several years in a row, is greatly appreciated. We are fortunate that so much of our business(about 50%) is repeat, or word of mouth referral, encourages us that our approach of always adding new and better facilities, is the rigt course. So it was good to read that the new high speed wifi network coped with streaming Netflix for your daughter. For 2018 we are inviting all guests to have dinner on us at Osteria alla Villa, which is our personal favourite, of the 4 restaurants in Villa a Sesta. Do come and enjoy dinner......on us!

About James Benfield

Montecchio is home in Tuscany to James and Penny Benfield, where we spend half of the year, and which we enjoy sharing with guests. To get a feel for this, do call James on his cell phone (UK code +44) 7879476002.

Penny & James had the great good fortune to 'fall over' the best spot on the highest point of the beautiful Villa Arceno wine estate, when contemplating the right place for a vacation home. After 30 years of living in Central London, and spoilt by a corporate lifestyle with lots of pampered travel, we needed something exceptional, in a beautiful setting, away from the developed centres of tourism.

If you want to know more, call James on his cell phone (UK code +44) 7879476002.

James Benfield purchased this villa in 1998

Why James Benfield chose Castelnuovo Berardenga

Because, as per the video on our website( it's "a little piece of paradise' :

- off the tourist track,

- in a stunning location on a hilltop, with breathtaking 360 degree views of the Chianti hills,

- in the countryside, but surrounded by picturesque villages, and just 20 minutes from the Renaissance gem of Siena,

- close to major roads, giving fast and easy access to Florence, San Gimignano, Cortona, Perugia, Orvieto, and many more 'must see' places,

- and most important for self confessed 'foodies', the area offers a wealth of good restaurants & quality wineries. There is a lot more detail on our own website

What makes this villa unique

"HOME FROM HOME" with 5 star standards of comfort and luxury; Countryhouse style & living with hospitality to match.

Because we controlled the renovation of the large Tuscan farmhouse from the very beginning, we were able to develop the property with the emphasis on privacy. As a result, Montecchio is made up of PROPER HOUSES, and NOT APARTMENTS, as would be the norm in Italy. Club Montecchio's Villa L'Oliveto has it's own outlook, large terace, private garden, and segregated parking pergola.

Villa L'Oliveto was designed and furnished in the same style as our own place at Montecchio; it was filled with pieces of art & furniture from our own collection. The kitchen was generously equipped to professional standards.

The result, we think, is a comfortable Vacation Villa, that feels like 'Home from Home', from the moment that you walk through the front door.

All this plus the owners' in-depth knowledge of the area, and it's amenities, with the 'inside track' on everything from which local retaurants are currently "hot", to where to park safely & legally in Florence|!
