Why Virginie and Richard Thompson chose Écrosnes
The cottage is situated on a large private estate that has been in the family for several generations. On the property sits a chateau, which we have been running as a B&B for nearly 20 years, and another cottage. One of the cottages was the old gamekeepers house. The other was the concierge's house. One was restored in 2007 and the other in 2011. We rent the cottage and run the B&B as a way of maintaining the property and keeping it in the family.

Very pleasant property with delightful décor! We found both the cottage and extensive garden very peaceful - having an entire forest to explore was an unexpected bonus!
Virginie was extremely helpful - particularly regarding local amenities and the places we wished to visit. We were able to visit Chartre, Giverney, Fontainebleau and Versailles from Ecrosnes - but our 4 days were not long enough to take full advantage of the cottage and area! Would definitely recommend to friends.
Beautiful and Serene
This was a beautiful getaway for my husband, 4 children and I. Very close to markets, trains to Paris and Chartres and easy day trips all over central and northern France. Virginie was a wonderful host and this home had all the amenities a family could want. It was peaceful to walk through the woods and explore the grounds of this pre-French Revolutionary estate, We will definitely make our way back! The only remark I have for visitors is when you use Google Maps to find the address, go to the village where houses are and the road as the addresses go up on one side and down on the other, the driveway is at the end, Google takes you to the back side of a gate that has been closed and without a road.
Charming Country Paradise
The generosity and welcoming spirit of the hosts, Virginie and Richard, complemented the tranquility and pastoral beauty of this setting. A spacious country kitchen, brightly lit by large windows that captured the morning and evening sun. A well stocked kitchen with everything needed for perfect meals. All amenities, parking, washer dryer and dishwasher!
Lots of books and information about attractions in the area. So cozy and comfortable that you won’t want to leave this charming country paradise! We travelled all over the place on day trips from here! Versailles, Chartres, Monet’s Garden, Auvers Sur Oise to see Vincent Van Gogh’s apartment and grave, Chateau Maintenon—we attended the Artisanal market in Chartres—it was a perfect location and then retreat to savor the day’s treasures and experiences. Virginie and Richard are the most gracious, wonderful people. We hope to return!
Beautiful, authentic french property
We are a family of 5, and all had a terrific time staying at this property. The accommodation itself is perfect. Very comfortable and set in a fabulous, remote forest location.
We used it a base for exploring paris and it was great for that. Only around a 40 min drive to versailles and the West side of paris.
Accommodation has great Wi-Fi so kids didn't have withdrawal symptoms 😀.
Overall we were really happy with this holiday. I would say it represents great value for money and I thoroughly recommend staying here!
Great location. Lovely house
This was a very comfortable house - super beds and showers - that was a pleasure to stay in. Very quiet but not too far by car from good supermarkets and a baker. And very easy to access Chartres and so many French castles and delightful old villages. We particularly loved Maintenon, so welcoming after the bustle of Versailles.
Poor weather meant we couldn't eat outside or make much use of the garden furniture and loungers but the courtyard looked as if it would be good in the summer with an umbrella over the table and not too far to carry food etc. The kitchen worked splendidly.
It was lovely too to walk round the park, especially before breakfast or in the late afternoons. We saw hares and red squirrels, as well of course as the family's hens.
Virginie and Richard were very welcoming and responded quickly to our queries before arrival. All in all a lovely break.
Spacious, clean cottage in beautiful French countryside
We had a super 11 night stay here with our teenage children. The cottage was well equipped, spacious with a pretty courtyard garden and acres of woods to explore. The location was good. We enjoyed two day trips to Paris from a nearby station using the mobilis rail travel ticket which also allowed us to use the metro. We visited Versailles and Chateau de Maintenon which were beautiful. We also enjoyed visiting the cathedral, illuminations and Odyssey swimming complex in Chartres.
The cottage is situated about 1 hour southwest of Paris, between Versailles (home of the famous chateau) and Chartres (home of the famous cathedral). It is an idea base for trips into Paris, Versailles, Chartres, Fontainbleau and Giverny. It is located in a quiet country village. You will need a car if you plan on staying here.
Paris is a 45 minute train ride from our local station in Epernon.
The eastern end of the Loire Valley is an easy day trip.
