Willard Beach Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage located in a quiet, family neighborhood; the Birdhouse is a dog friendly ( sorry, no cats) cottage with three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one and a half baths. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one and a half baths, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About Susan and Tony

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Ernie, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Susan and Tony purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Susan and Tony chose South Portland

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

What makes this cottage unique

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Wonderful

We had a wonderful stay st the birdhouse. The owners thought of everything, even providing food and water bowls for our dog. Enjoyed Willard Beach and Scratch Bakery. Our friends were right around the corner so we could walk everywhere. Haven't been that relaxed in a long time. Can't wait to come back

Just what we hoped it would be.

The Bird House was clean, comfortable, cozy, and had plenty of hot water! Any cottage that can support the creation of a Thanksgiving dinner of Lobster, Turkey, home made pie, and all the trimmings, is a great place to stay. Thank you Susan and Tony for creating such a comfortable place for us to stay while visiting family in Maine for Thanksgiving week!

As comfortable as home

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the birdhouse, the first stay with our dogs. This home is one that I would return to again and again as many people do .

The location is fantastic. Morning walks to Willard beach and Scratch bakery, close to Portland for all the wonderful city has to offer. The best thing for us was how easy it was to care for our dogs. The back yard is fenced in and there is a dispenser on the back deck for doggie waste. If you stay here please clean up , I want this house to always stay pet friendly. The house is very comfortable, it appears several renovations have been done since our previous trip. The day we left we headed to Boothbay and got a call from the caretaker Lisa. We had left our prescriptions at the house. She went out of her way to make sure we got them back. The Birdhouse is essential Maine.

Perfect place to experience life as a Mainah your

  • 5 of 5

This place is fantastic. Everything went as smooth as can be from booking to check-in to check-out. Susan and Tony are very responsive and informative, they even send you a cute little packet of information about the house in the mail 2 months in advance. They have thought of absolutely everything, any questions that arise there are answers either in the booklet in the house or labeled somewhere. It's wonderful! They allowed my mother and I to split up the week so we could both enjoy it separately and so we could split the bill, which was a huge relief. Now onto the fun part, the house is literally steps from Willard Beach! It's also a short walk to the Scratch Bakery, Willard Scoops and the Whole Dog Market. We took full advantage of all three every day. Coming from a city it was wonderful to be able to let our dog explore the backyard knowing she couldn't escape. Humans who have trouble walking might want to be careful not to trip on the apples in the yard from the beautiful apple tree. What a refreshing scent to wake up to...salt air and apples!:) You can walk the dog on the beach in the mornings and evenings, we had to keep ours leashed because she isn't the friendliest with other dogs and there are a lot of other dogs off leash on the beach. Luckily other people and dogs were respectful of our space. Willard Beach is beautiful and not that crowded. There's even a grassy area where yoga classes were being held with a spectacular view. This location in South Portland is 10 minutes from Portland and 5 minutes to Fort Williams Park which I highly recommend...great to take the dog and get the most delicious Lobster rolls at the Bite Into Maine food truck. We had plans to eat out in Portland but actually favoured staying at the house and cooking some nights because it was so peaceful and pleasant. There is even a gas grill to use on the deck! The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need. The house itself is very comfortable and cozy and there is even cable with DVR capability! And WiFi! It all worked really well too. I love the remote for the TV, high tech but easy to use...just remember to turn on the speakers below the TV if they don't turn on automatically, really enhances the sound. There are 3 bedrooms all a decent size, master is quite large. There's even a second half bath upstairs. There is no central air but we didn't need it at all. There's a wonderful breeze and nights are cool. I really can't wait to go back! It's the best of Maine!

Fantastic property

  • 5 of 5

We keep coming back to this wonderful house that is 1 minute walk from a beautiful sand beach. The property is well-kept, the neighborhood quiet and peaceful, and close to good shops and restaurants. Fantastic kitchen, we also grilled on the deck, and took advantage of being 5 minutes from downtown Portland (Old Port). Can't speak highly enough: clean, well equipped, got notes and calls from the owners making sure everything was just right. Thanks!
