The Birdhouse at Willard Beach ~ a Maine cottage at the beach

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage located in a quiet, family neighborhood; the Birdhouse is a dog friendly (sorry, no cats) cottage with three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one and a half baths. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one and a half baths, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, dishwasher, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About Susan and Tony

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Ernie, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Susan and Tony purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Susan and Tony chose South Portland

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

What makes this cottage unique

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Another great week in a lovely setting. House is in a terrific location steps from the beach. Recently kitchen and bath were remodeled and a new 1/2 bath was added, making the Birdhouse even nicer.. I think we have stayed here in 4 different summers and we always love returning. The best possible owners to work with, too. Enjoy!

Great location in Willard Beach area!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week at The Birdhouse! We stayed there with our toddler son and took advantage of the close proximity to Willard Scoops, Scratch Bakery and the beach. We didn't not do a ton of cooking at home (we were on vacation!).

If you're looking for a house in the South Portland area, it's a great place. Here's a quick list of our personal pros/cons:

- SO close to the beach. Easy to walk back and forth with a toddler (who may only want to spend 30 minutes on the beach, so you were close to home in that situation!)

- Walking distance to Scratch Bakery (great homemade treats and bagels for the morning) and Willard Scoops (ice cream)

- Easy to get in/out of Portland - about a 12-15 minute drive

- Great fenced in yard/outdoor space

- Quiet neighborhood

- A few updates could be made. While I love the rustic charm of cottages, I think a few furniture pieces could be updated, such as the dressers. Both were older (read: no rolling tracks) and with the humidity and sea air, the drawers stuck pretty badly. To the point that it was hard to open draws without rocking drawers back and forth and making a TON of noise (not ideal for me, who wanted do sneak out for a morning walk and breakfast without waking anyone).

- The front porch was a nice addition, but there was a slight underlying smell of mildew, probably due to the fact that the rain can come in under the door (which the owner tells you in their binder)

- No cleaning fee. Why is this a con, you might wonder? Because without the fee, there is the expectation that the renters will do a bit of cleaning for the house. This might be great for some people, but for us personally, we would rather pay a cleaning fee and not need to worry about cleaning the tub, doing towel laundry, etc while trying to entertain and wrangle a toddler while trying to pack a car to get leave by 11am.

The area is great, the beach is the perfect size for families, and the neighborhood is great for walking!

Semaine de relâche dans le Maine

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Merci. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Birdhouse. We hope that you will return when the weather is warmer, to truly be able to enjoy the beach! And for others, who, like us, may be not very good at French translation ~ here is Google's translation: Spring break in Maine ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We are a family of 4 from Quebec. The house is really charming, comfortable and very well equipped. It is well located near the ocean. We also went for a stroll along the seaside of Old Orchard Beach and Popham Beach to bring teenagers to our childhood memories. In short, a very nice stay at The Birdhouse and we are sad to leave ... Thank you for making us enjoy your beautiful home.

Very nice!

I have rented this property previously and enjoyed it both times. It was clean and everything we needed was available. I liked the changes they have made with installing a bathroom upstairs. We also enjoyed the gas stove because it was very cold.
