Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage located in a quiet, family neighborhood; the Birdhouse is a dog friendly ( sorry, no cats) cottage with three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one and a half baths. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.
Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.
The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one and a half baths, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.
The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.
While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Ernie, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.
Susan and Tony purchased this cottage in 2011
We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!
How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.
We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!
I have rented this property previously and enjoyed it both times. It was clean and everything we needed was available. I liked the changes they have made with installing a bathroom upstairs. We also enjoyed the gas stove because it was very cold.
Cosy home with beach views and easy access to beach. House nicely maintained with all that's needed for a cosy family getaway with a fenced in yard for your favorite dog!
This is a very well appointed, comfortable home. The seating in the living room has comfortable furniture, and the bed in the master is very comfortable - complete with flannel sheets and down blanket! All the sheets are 100% cotton, and there is scent free laundry soap. There are more acutraments in the kitchen than you could ever use. This is more like a home than a rental. 5 minute walk to the beach. Many of the basic cooking and baking needs are provided. Lots of spices - alphabetized. We had 6 inches of snow, and the owner had even hired someone to shovel the driveway! The beautiful blue enameled gas stove in the living room is delightful. Thanks for letting us stay here.
We consider the Birdhouse our home away from home. This was our second stay at the cottage for the Holidays. We love being close to the beach, having a fenced in yard for our Old English Sheepdogs and being close to some really great restaurants without having to go into downtown Portland. The kitchen is well equipped and I was able to make my traditional Pork Pies and Christmas Cookings without having to bring anything from home. Our family and friends enjoyed coming to visit us at the cottage. We are looking forward to Christmas 2018!
What a wonderful place to stay, the house was perfect! We visited for a girls getaway, and we were welcomed with treats and a lovely note! We used uber for the evenings that we were out for dinner and drinks, but we also rented a car and were able to drive to a couple of the towns nearby during the day. The house was quiet, clean, and comfortable. Few steps away from beach. We absolutely loved it! Thank you Susan and Tony for sharing your home with us!
We had a wonderful stay st the birdhouse. The owners thought of everything, even providing food and water bowls for our dog. Enjoyed Willard Beach and Scratch Bakery. Our friends were right around the corner so we could walk everywhere. Haven't been that relaxed in a long time. Can't wait to come back
