The Birdhouse at Willard Beach ~ a Maine cottage at the beach

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage located in a quiet, family neighborhood; the Birdhouse is a dog friendly (sorry, no cats) cottage with three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one and a half baths. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one and a half baths, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, dishwasher, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

About Susan and Tony

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Ernie, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Susan and Tony purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Susan and Tony chose Willard

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

What makes this cottage unique

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

Cute cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

This is a very well-stocked cottage, located a minute's walk from Willard Beach, which is heaven for dog walkers (the dog owners AND the dogs around here are very cool) or for dogless walkers, too. A cool little strip of sand that's beautiful in the morning. Portland is a 15-minute drive away. If you stay local, there are a couple great breakfast spots (Toast Bar, Scratch Bakery, 158 Pickett) and one seriously good dinner spot (David's 338). All in all, a great place to get away from it all.

Divine solitude

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Birdhouse was a welcome respite in our all too busy lives. For both of us the months of September through November have us so busy, flying all over the country and never spending enough time with one another and our dogs. We plan this rejuvenation time around Thanksgiving every year. This was our first time at the Birdhouse and will not be our last.

I confess we did not do a lot. We slept, played with dogs, slept more, cooked, laughed and relaxed. It was just what we order for ourselves. From the perfect backyard for our 15lb dogs, to the gourmet kitchen, to the peace and quiet we did not want for anything.

Thank for the beauty of your home and your kindness in sharing it.

Superbe séjour!

  • 5 of 5

A Cozy and Welcoming Beach Cottage Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The warmth and cozy feel of the cottage upon arrival was like an embracing hug inviting us in to let go and relax and that's exactly what we did. Only steps away from the beach welcomed daily morning and evening walks along a pristine coastline from which you could see a skyline of boats and two lighthouses. The location was also ideal for a morning walk to get a cup or two of coffee and a breakfast goodie from Scratch Bakery; those I met walking in the neighborhood each day were genuinely friendly. A couple of mornings we ate at a unique crepe suzette eatery called Flip that served delicious and hearty breakfast crepes and also sweet and decadent crepes. The Willard Beach location was perfect for our stay to celebrate Mom's 75th birthday and we were only a mile away from where my son lives. The location in particular is in close proximity to (3) lighthouses, one of which was just a short walk North from Willard Beach. There are delightful eateries nearby and we enjoyed outings to Wolf Neck Woods, Macworth Island and also picked apples at an apple orchard. My homemade apple pie was a must to make from our basket of picked apples! The birdhouse was a sanctuary retreat to return to at the end of each day of sightseeing...a true "Welcome Home" was felt and we enjoyed a comforting night's sleep each night! Although we didn't utilize Lisa's concierge services it was reassuring to know that she was just a phone call away if we needed anything. The kitchen was fully equipped; the only item we had to borrow was a blender for Mom's protein shakes. We experienced beautiful sunny and cool Fall weather and the colors peaked during the week of our was truly magical! As long as my son lives in South Portland I hope that the Birdhouse at Willard Beach will continue to embrace us with it's warmth and charm upon each returning visit. The Birdhouse is a Gem and I treasured the memories made and will look forward to making many more. Thank you, Susan and Tony for the warmth of your hospitality!
