This gracious home is ideally located on Hillside Drive in one of La Jolla’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods. It is a short two or three minute drive from the village’s shopping and restaurants, and from La Jolla Shores, the area’s premier swimming beach.
Situated near the foot of Mount Soledad, the site was chosen when La Jolla was still an unfilled canvas. Acquired soon after it was built in the late twenties by one of La Jolla’s first doctors, the family later remodeled it in the fifties. Now owned by celebrated cookbook author, Jim Peyton, a La Jolla native, it was recently completely remodeled and restored to provide contemporary amenities with the elegance of old La Jolla. A striking feature is the extensive garden that occupies two full lots, a rare amenity in La Jolla.
The house has a spacious living room and a large kitchen with tile and granite counters. The family-dining room overlooks the gardens and adjacent canyon. There are two one-bedroom suites with private, attached sitting rooms and bathrooms, and a third bedroom and bath. All three bedrooms have kingsize beds. Two of them have top quality pillow-top mattresses and the third bedroom features a Tempurpedic mattress. The sitting room of the master suite has a library that includes historical books on the area. Each bedroom has its own television, and there is a rollaway and futon for extra sleepers.
The entire house is furnished with oriental rugs, antiques and appropriate contemporary pieces. The expansive grounds feature a covered outdoor entertainment area and private nooks, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. There are grills in the entertainment area and in the kitchen patio, where guests are welcome to pluck fresh herbs from the herb garden.
The rental rate ranges from $2,250 per week to $2,950 per week, with discounts available for longer stays and during the off-season. For small parties, the street level, with the one-bedroom, master suite, living room, kitchen and family-dining room may be rented separately during the off-season for $1,850 per week. If that option is chosen the remaining two bedrooms remain vacant.
Features and Amenities
The kitchen includes a Miele stove and stainless steel vent, an oven, a microwave, a refrigerator with ice-maker, a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, all cutlery, china, and many small kitchen appliances and tools. Four telephones, including one in each bedroom. Four televisions, including one in each bedroom. High-speed internet connection in the master suite. Electronic security system; guests wishing to use it will be assigned a temporary code and password. Five AM/FM radios, two with CD players. The house is ideally suited for walks in the neighboring hills and a short fifteen minutes from the Del Mar racetrack, the San Diego zoo, Sea World, and most other local attractions. There are two garages and a long driveway for off-street parking.
All linens, tissues and other supplies are included in the rental rate, as are utilities, and taxes.
Since shortly after it was built, the house has been in three generations of the same family, spanning over eighty years. The current owner, Jim Peyton, was born and raised in La Jolla. He is a writer, with four well regarded books on Mexican food and culture in print. He is also a restaurant consultant.

The house is located in a perfect central location, equidistant between La Jolla village and the area's best swimming beach. The neighborhood is quiet and exclusive, and the home occupies two large lots, a rare amenity in La Jolla that permits privacy. It also has ample offstreet parking, another rarity.
The home's location allows access to beaches and the restaurants and shopping in the village within minutes. The amenities of San Diego are but ten to fifteen minutes away as is the racetrack in Del Mar. The world famous Torrey Pines golf courses are just a few miles away.
We have been renting this wonderful home for over 10 years. We previously lived in La Jolla before moving to Phoenix. When we first rented when our first child was 9 weeks old and recently returned with our two children. We have rented the house at least a dozen times over the years. The house is perfect for families who enjoy both beach time and playing in the lush yard. The owner meticulously maintains the home and provides so many little extras that make it feel like you are not staying in a rental but staying in your own home. Our family feels like we are coming home every time we run up the front steps. We hope to continue to stay in the home for many years to come!
Our family, which includes our four children, rented this home to visit Sea World, Safari Park, USS Midway, the beach, and Legoland. It was a wonderful vacation and this was a great home to return to after a busy day out and about. Beds were comfortable. The front patio was a wonderful place to unwind and to enjoy our meals. The owner was a wonderful person to work with to make the reservation. He included a list of restaurant recommendations that was priceless. I would recommend this house to anyone.
My family gathered in La Jolla for a family reunion and some of the family stayed in this house. The bedrooms were very comfortable and allowed plenty of privacy. The patio in front was so nice to sit and chat. La Jolla is a beautiful location and this house is ideally located for beach and shopping in the village. You do need a car but there is plenty of parking. Very nice helpful neighbors as well!
My friends and I get together every year for a week of relaxation and fun. This October we went to LaJolla and this home was recommended to us. It was one of the best vacations we've had! The home was absolutely beautiful, comfortable and cozy. The rooms were spacious and filled with lovely furniture. We felt so relaxed here and wished we could stay longer.
Our family had a wonderful stay at this cozy home in the hills above LaJolla. The three separate bedrooms/baths gave each couple privacy, and the beds/bedding were very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the open space in the living room area for children to play, and the kitchen/dining areas were well-stocked with dishes, pans, and utensils for cooking. The front patio area is great for catching the morning sun while drinking coffee and reading. The owner was extremely helpful and gave us very good recommendations for restaurants in the area. This is a home where we felt welcome and "at home."
My husband and I and our three children ages 8, 13, and 16 rented this perfect family home for the entire month of July. The home is situated in one of the higher end residential neighborhoods. This property is unique as it sits on a double lot. The seconds lot is a huge grassy lawn, with it's perimeters landscaped lushly with fruit trees, and colorful bougenvillas. The three bedrooms are very spacious with tons of closet space. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances. We thoroughly enjoyed most of our meals on the outside patio with a view of the ocean, leaving us a feeling as though we could be dining along the Cote d' Azur. The home is very casual, and easy to maintain with children. Our kids loved playing in the yard and exploring the gardens. We were able to drive within five minutes to our favorite beaches, wind and sea and marine street. The pictures the owner has posted are completely accurate. The owner is wonderfully easy and very accommodating . The location is supreme. You are moments away from downtown La Jolla, filled with great restaurants, shopping, and gorgeous beaches. This is a classic Spanish home with lots of character and very comforting. The breakfast room off the kitchen feels as though you are in a beautiful tree house. As you look out the windows at a tree blossoming with purple flowers. There is a plenty of room in this home, and a great place to create fun family memories. We would love to rent this home again.
