|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Ewing House is on a hillside, 60 feet above sea level, bordered by the ocean on two sides and overlooks the ‘mile-long” Long Bay Beach. From all bedroom and common rooms you can see a number of other islands, the most well known being Jost Van Dyke and St. Thomas while enjoying views of endless sailboats, various birds and fish in the waters below. You are a 1-3 minute walk to the water as the beach begins at the foot of our driveway- about 50 yards from our house. We are one of only a few houses on the island that are really located right on a usable beach. This is a very beautiful beach, which you may recognize as our view often appears on calendars and other publications on the Caribbean. We do feel that we have the most beautiful view on the island. Others must feel the same way as we have had one couple take the house for a month each year for 25 years and a number of other couples who have come in the area of five years or more.
Located on Tortola’s West End, Ewing House has walking access to excellent beaches for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and surfing. West End has many excellent restaurants, a number of running/walking loops along the ocean, tennis and sailing as well as scuba diving day trips leaving from nearby Soper’s Hole. Of course, one can also just read in the shade of the porch or sun bathe and watch the waves roll by. The house has 3 bedrooms, each with the same view and size. We had rented numerous houses and generally someone was disappointed when their room was smaller. Each bedroom has its own bath and dressing area. While we prefer ceiling fans and open windows, the bedrooms now also have air conditioning so you have the choice.
The house comes with daily maid service and the maid always gets great reviews. Dion Stoutt manages our house. He has been one of our neighbors and friend for many years. He is very easy to deal with and has an amazing knowledge of the island. Both he and the maid can help you with any problems or questions that you might have. There are so many things to do on the island and ferry trips to numerous other islands are possible. We always visit at least one other island every time that we are there.
We originally built the home as a family with my husband, myself, my sister and my mother. The house was managed by my mom who was a pediatrican in Ohio and although she died in 1994, the house is still sometimes referred to as Dr. Ewing's house. My husband and I live in Greenwich Connecticut and my sister lives in New Rochelle, New York. I have two children, ages 32 and 34, and my son, Chris Relyea, has helped with the rentals of the house for several years. The web site has lots of nice information on the island. My children have each come to the island since they were a few months old. They now have small children. It is a great place for children as they can play in the house during the day and as the living room is open to the sea side, you had the feeling of being at the beach without the sun. We would take them to the beach in the early morning and afternoon and then maybe have lunch in some protected restaurant in between.
Owner/Manager purchased this villa in 1973
We first visited the island as a family in 1973 and left the island 9 days later having purchased our site. The island really opened to tourists in 1966 when a small bridge was built connecting the small island called Beef Island to Tortola and an airport was built on Beef Island. We were one of the very first non-native families to build on the island and feel that we bought a particulary beautiful sight. We walk down our driveway to the beach. We are off a good paved road. This was important to us as so many homes are not on paved roads and we don't mind bouncing around sometimes, we don't want to do it constantly. Also we are in walking distance to a number of good restaurants and hotels with their amenities. As we are on a point, we have a lot of privacy.We like being just above the beach as we don't have a sand fly problem if there is one and we get more breeze.
We do have the view that we have seen on many calendars. It was on the Costco brochure last year for cruise travel. My mother was once in the dentist chair and saw it on his calendar hanging before her.As I said ,it is a very short walk to the beach. It is easy to pop down and have a swim. We do have beach chairs if you want to stay but we frequently just go down and swim and then come up and enjoy the comforts of the open house as the walk back and forth is so easy.. We are very close to a number of good restaurants.
Overall very nice and comfortable house for 4 adult and 2 kids. Good and convenient location to all nice beaches and attractions . House keeper arrived
Daily to clean she was very attentive.
Only problem, was challenging to find the house when arriving at darkness.
The views are amazing! The house was clean and well maintained. The housekeeper came daily and was very informative. The owner was very helpful and always got back to me quickly with all my questions answered. It was a fantastic week of relaxation and quality family time in paradise. We will definitely be staying at Ewing House again in the future!
This is our 3rd stay at the Ewing House, we find it to be one of the best spots on the island! Convenient to beaches, restaurants, and yet still secluded overlooking Long Bay. 5 of us stayed there over Christmas, and had a wonderful time. We highly recommend this house. Dion and Christine keep an eye on the house, and do a great job of keeping it neat and tidy.
Our family has vacationed the past two years at The Ewing House and will be returning again in 2016. This house has many wonderful things to offer. The house has so much personality and charm. It is the perfect beach house offering the best view on the entire island of Tortola, an open living room so that you always feel like you are on the ocean. You can hear the roar of the waves in every room. Every room has the spectacular view of Long Bay Beach. The Pelicans entertain you all day flying and diving down for fish and even sat and perched on the limb by the deck to rest and clean himself while I had my morning coffee. Another morning while watching a morning shower quickly pass through I looked up from reading and a beautiful double rainbow stretched from one end of the beach over the water into the ocean. One of the most majestic sights I have ever seen. The bathrooms also offer a special beach touch. The showers have screen windows with wooden slats that can be open or shut. I loved taking a shower in my screen tub watching and listening to the beautiful blue ocean. The bedrooms have air condition if you wish to use it. The kitchen is fully equipped if you wish to cook while staying there. We found everything we needed in the cabinets. They have added a mosquito net along the deck and living room. The bugs were never a big problem for us but it is a nice feature if the bugs get bad. The beach is just a quick walk down the driveway which makes the perfect place for hanging out on the beach. In the summer the snorkeling is great right down below the house. The white sand on Long Bay beach is the silkiest sand my feet have ever touched. The beach is one mile long and offers several restaurants. The Tropical Fusion restaurant has the awarding winning Chef Kenneth preparing the food and everything there is fabulous! His cheesecake is the best I have ever tasted! Long Bay Beach Resort also has a restaurant, gift shop and spa services that you can purchase. The house is located close to Soffers Hole which is the home of a lovely grocery store called Harbor Market. You can also find several cute shops there and a great breakfast restaurant and also the restaurant, Pussers, that offers a variety of different food on their menu. Soffers Hole is only a 5-8 min drive away. You are also not far from Cane Garden Bay which has many restaurants and lots of water sport toys to rent on their beach.
6 of us (3 family member couples) stayed at Ewing House last week- as we came in the door right at sunset and saw that the room was completely open to the patio balcony overlooking the ocean, we knew we had arrived at paradise. Every evening we sat together on this wide balcony sipping wine and commenting how we couldn't believe our luck in finding this place. It was everything it said it would be. I love the beach and waves. My sisters love to swim. My husband loves to snorkel. We had it all. Early in the week, the ocean was quiet and we enjoyed lots of swimming and snorkeling. Later, when the wind and waves picked up, I loved the breakers and pounding surf. I have been to Hawaii and other Virgin Islands and Mexico, and I do not believe there is a more beautiful beach anywhere! One thing I loved about the house was that our rooms were air conditioned, if we wished. The tempterature never varied all week from 70 at night to 82 during the day. I prefer to sleep cooler, so we would turn on the air, but the machine was so quiet that we could still hear the surf all night. The kitchen was adequate to our needs, and we loved charcoal grillling down on the patio. Having a washer/dryer and maid service was great. It was a little climb down the drive to the beach and back, but very doable. Food in Tortola was a bit more expensive than we had expected, so we were glad to be able to take one or two meals a day 'at home'. Some of us also took an excursion to another Island, but there is so much to see and do on Tortola, I stayed put. Mimi, the owner, is a great help and always answered our questions promptly, both before and during the trip. I give it 5 stars.
It's all been said in the previous reviews, but the Ewing House is in an amazing location (less than 1 minute walk to beach) with simply stunning views from every room. We were worried about the heat being there in the summer, but with a gorgeous beach steps away, as well as air conditioning in all the bedrooms, it was a non issue. The property owner (Mimi -- thank you!) couldn't have been nicer and more helpful with every aspect of our family getaway, as was Christine, who gave us the local scoop besides the great housekeeping. As far as the island, it's drop dead gorgeous and a wonderful adventure, very different from our usual Hawaii vacations. The people of Tortola are extremely warm and friendly; we felt safe everywhere we went. A side trip to Virgin Gorda is highly recommended as well -- be sure to visit Spring Bay and not just the Baths, which can get very crowded (Spring Bay was practically deserted and even more beautiful). All said and done, it was a fantastic trip!
We walk to several restaurants and quite a few more are withing 1-2 miles. Horseback riding has been available in the past but we do not know if this is still the case. The island has a botanical garden and a national park for walking on the top of one of the mountain peaks. There are a number of nearby grocery stores but a rental car or taxi is needed. There are many nearby beaches and each is unique. The house has two bedroom upstairs and another on the floor below. The downstairs bedroom has a small additional kitchen. The beds can be made up as twin beds or king sized. Beach chairs are usually available but they deteriorate quickly, can not be bought on the island so they will not seem special. We are within 10-15 minutes of ferries to other islands.
