Best Location on this River!

The Santa Ana River upper headwaters of the river in the San Bernardino Mountains still retain a free flowing character and outstanding natural values. The upper headwaters, including its sparkling waters, scenic verdant meadows, rich riparian habitat, and thick forests of pine, fir, and oak offer an outdoor recreation mecca for hikers, bicyclists and fishermen. Perfect place to reconnect with family and friends in a green and pristine mountain wilderness. Come and surround yourself with the natural beauty and privacy of a wooded landscape.

Give yourself time for writing and hiking, painting and reading and stargazing in this peaceful sanctuary. Sit back and take delight in the breath-taking view from the deck as the sun sets and listen to the soothing sounds of nature. Birdwatchers often spot owls, herons, ducks, woodpeckers, hawks and quail.

This is a quality rental for families, perfect for family reunions and quiet retreats.

About R.J. Hendrickson

Originally from the lake country of northern Minnesota. Robert hand-scribed this fabulous home and all the amazing details. Robert likes to tinker and invent. Anna enjoys landscaping this five acre canvas. Their hospitality experience included owning a bed and breakfast in New Zealand. The log house shares this five acre property with the owner’s cabin - 300' away from the house. We respect your privacy, but if you need anything we can assist immediately. We are very interested in making sure your stay is comfortable.

R.J. Hendrickson purchased this house in 1997

Why R.J. Hendrickson chose Inland Empire

We handcrafted this unique log home ourselves, with much attention to detail. Located in a beautiful green wilderness, the Santa Ana River is unique for So. California - green and pristine. Love the apple blossoms and yucca in the Spring. Bird watching includes herons, owls, quail and hawks. Stars are a lot brighter out here. We encourage our guests to learn about our region's rich history, encouraging stewardship of this rich and unique riparian environment.

What makes this house unique

Private gate, 1/2 mile to the cabin. Only ten neighbors, all homes are on 5 acres surrounded by 30+ miles of beautiful national forest. Private gate, cabin is 1/4 mile away from the paved road on a private road. Fabulous views. This is not crowded like Big Bear, even on holidays.

Guestbook comments from the owner

RJ…just want to add my 2 cents worth.

We really enjoyed the 2 night stay at your Log cabin. What an accomplishment. My daughter and her husband flew out from Dallas just for my Mom’s 90th birthday celebration, so you know this was a big deal for me and Tammy to have our mom honored like this. Your place was perfect. And added to that was the warm feeling you gave us to be around you. We have been emailing each other back and forth saying how we hope we can all get together again and do a repeat.

Expansive mountain retreat full of character and charm.

  • 5 of 5

I had no idea how awesome a log cabin could be. R.J. And Anna built this place themselves and all the hard work, care and attention to detail really shows. We shared the cabin with 2 other families. There was plenty of space and tons for the kids to do: playing in the creek, picking apples, swinging on the giant swing, and more. Anna was an excellent host as well and we hope to be back very soon.

Unforgettable place to hang out in the nature with kids

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay!

6 families could stay 3 nights very comfortably and had a lot of fun inside and outside with kids from 1 year old to 6 years old.

Kids loved the swing on the big tree and apple on the tree. We picked the apple and ate beside the creek. Kids love that! Babies hanged out at the yard in front of the lodge to enjoy the breeze. My daughter had her first encounter to the little baby frog. It was so cute. Star-filled night sky was unforgettable! I saw see the Milky Way first time in my life. We still cannot believe it's 2 hour away from Los Angeles.

The lodge is very organized and most of the kitchen staff we needed was there. Beds were nice and comfortably organized and 12 adults and 7 kids had really good sleep.

Ana, the owner is very nice lady. We love everything about this property and people!! Defiantly we will revisit for sure!

Thank you so much.

Gorgeous cabin for our family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our entire family enjoyed every second of our family reunion. This cabin is absolutely beautiful, and the grounds are gorgeous! All the cousins had the best time playing in the river, picking wild blackberries, swinging on a huge swing, hiking.... Just an all-around great time.

We hope that we can make this an annual event!

The owners were very kind, thoughtful, and extremely easy to work with.

Can we stay here forever?

  • 5 of 5

Our five night 'retreat' with our children and grandchildren to Anna & R.J.'s log 'cabin'(it is difficult to call it a cabin...more like a luxury lodge filled with artifacts and art!) was incomparable.

This place is simply unique: all the beauty, quiet and solitude of being 'in the mountains' and 'away from it all', yet much closer than driving to other nearby and more touristy locations. The grounds themselves are simply beautiful... various flower gardens interspersed with lawns and tall trees, plus a small apple orchard, vegetable garden and raspberry patch. Upon arrival, my wife spent the first ten minutes just investigating the nearby flowers as a many types of butterflies were flitting about...

Our family took walks up and down the river and into the forest, fished (and caught!), played games together each day on the large lawn in front of the home, bbq'ed, had a picnic at Jenks Lake (about 20 mins. away), drove to Big Bear Lake to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July(we enjoyed the show but are VERY glad we decided against staying there), played board games together in the cool evenings and almost never opened up an electronic device the entire trip.

Anna and R.J. were perfect hosts...warm, friendly and responsive but never intrusive. Anna was such a blessing to our kids and grandkids, helping them get set up for the 'swing across the river', encouraging them to 'go higher!'

Our focus for this trip was our family, but my wife and I hope to return soon for a shorter trip, hopefully to be repeated regularly!

Thank you, Anna and R.J., for creating such a special place for others to enjoy.

Great large place to spread out/relax/explore

  • 5 of 5

Away from the crowds and so much to do. Anna, the host, was so helpful and showed us around in day one... And then it was just us and our guests to enjoy/relax/explore away from the crowds. Capture the flag on the beautiful grass lawns and Bbq'in on the deck and plenty of beds in the incredible cabin. Hope to be back soon! Thanks Anna!
