Provence village house in the Luberon with terrace views

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,140 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Terraced house with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4/5, air con/heating

Hiding at the end of a quiet pedestrian cul-de-sac within the walls of the oldest 13th century part of the village, this charming old stone terraced-house appears from the outside to be part of an earlier era. Tastefully restored and well appointed, the house does not have a garden but the roof terrace offers stunning views across the rooftops to the Luberon and across the valley the mountain St Victoire. This historic village dates back to 1004 and boasts restaurants, bakeries, shops and a cash machine all within easy walking distance. You can soak up the ambiance at the cafe in the shade of the plane trees by the renowned rectangular pond. Located on the gentle southern slopes of the Luberon, Cucuron enjoys clear light and blue skies with sunshine some 300 days per year. Life runs at a slower pace here and you will too, yet there is always something going on. The perfect place to relax, explore, walk and eat well!

About Jonathan & Eve Wort

We live near Basingstoke in England and, sadly, can only get to Cucuron for a few weeks' holiday each year. We have travelled to France on holiday over many years and love staying in our house in Cucuron. We offer the house for rental so that others can enjoy this experience!

Jonathan & Eve Wort purchased this house in 2004

Why Jonathan & Eve Wort chose Cucuron

I first travelled to the Luberon area with a friend's family during school summer holidays in the late 1960's. When we had the opportunity, it was logical for us to buy a second home in the Luberon. For us, our village house in Cucuron really makes you feel part of the local community.

What makes this house unique

For fans of Doctor Who, this is the tardis! From a small front door on a narrow village street, there is spacious accommodation within and a magnificent view across the village rooftops from the upstairs terrace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for all the useful info and for making it so easy for us to commit to this house. All was perfect - weather, house, location. We made many road trips - even down to Cassis, but loved coming 'home' to Cucuron!

The home is tastefully equipped and spacious. It will be most appreciated by a couple or two, or a family of 3 or 4 wishing to get away from it all to enjoy the relaxed pace of life in inland Provence, outside the fast lane. Reversible air conditioning units in each room provide cooling in summer and rapid heat in other seasons. There is wireless Internet access but no fixed line telephone in the house. It should be noted that the property has stone stairs between various levels, a terrace at roof level and does not have a garden or outside space. Therefore this home is unlikely to be suitable for young children (except infants). The owners use the property themselves when they can: they offer the home so that others can experience the charm of living in the oldest part of Cucuron, which they have so much enjoyed in recent years.

Delightful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Before even arriving in Cucuron, we had received excellent support from Jonathan who couldn't have been more helpful and always quick to respond.

On arrival, we were struck by how immaculate the house was. We liked the layout and spacious feel together with the very inviting ambience, topped by the stunning terrace overlooking the town. We spent so much time on the terrace and shall never forget it. From here we watched the flocks of birds going out in the morning and returning again in the evening and the numerous doves on the rooftops. Watching the sun rise in the morning and darkness slowly descending in the evening, bringing the town lights on and lighting up the church tower, was beautiful and peaceful.

Cucuron itself has so much to offer and has the feel of a truly working community. There are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

There are many places of interest within easy reach. One of our favourites was Lourmarin market on a Friday morning with its colourful variety of stalls and wonderful atmosphere. We trekked over to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which we love, (fantastic Sunday market) not least because, in our view, there is the best ice cream offering, from Isabella's, alongside the river followed closely by L'tang de la Bonde which is much closer to Cucuron.

We would love return to this lovely town and house.

The real Provence

  • 5 of 5

The house is a gem in the old section of Cucuron. It has everything you might need for a very confortable stay, A few feet away , two bakerys with fresh hot "baguettes and croissants ". Then, l'ètang around witch you can enjoy an apéro and a great supper. On tuesday mornings, a lively and rich " marché" offers fresh fruits and vegetahles, fine cheeses etc....

Nearby, many " villages perchés " and a spectacular scenery and, of course Aix- en - Provence thirty minutes away. The owners are easy to reach and prompt to answer any question. Formidable !

Just right!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Chez Wort in Cucuron. The house is exactly as pictured, very comfortable, and well-equipped (especially the kitchen). Walking into the village for coffee, a glass of wine, lunch or dinner was the highlight of our day -- after spending an inordinate amount of time on the terrace reading and taking in the view. We'll definitely be back.

Perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Well-equipped kitchen for cooks. Beautiful terrace overlooking the village and nearby mountains. Comfortable bed. Village with all conveniences including a grocery and a starred Michelin restaurant. What's not to like? Only thing missing was wood for the fireplace for chilly nights. Would highly recommend this rental!

Owner's Response: We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. In fact, wood is widely available in supermarkets though guests typically find our paraffin heater (oil provided) convenient for glow at the fireplace.

Supreme comfort in a perfect Luberon village

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful, welcoming house, our happy home for two splendid weeks, gave us access to the Luberon at its best. From the private terrace, one has views of the lovely village, the mountain range, and Mont Sainte Victoire, beloved by Cezanne. The house is very clean and well equipped, and Jonathan and Eve could not have been more attentive to our many questions beforehand. Although we haven't met them, we feel as though we know them. Cucuron itself is well located for exploring the glories of Provence, but is also a jewel itself, with three bakeries, a butcher, a pharmacy, a grocery store, and, above all, a weekly market around the pond that serves as the central square. Recommended restaurants: Le petit Resto in Vaugines, L'Argelas in Lauris, and L'Arbre de Mai and La Petite Maison in Cucuron. However, smoked trout, delicious tomatoes, salad, and wonderful bread and wine, served on the terrace, was hard to beat! We highly recommend this house, without any reservations. And as for us, perhaps an entire month next time?

Wonderful time in Cucuron!

  • 4 of 5

Our stay in this lovely apartment in Cucuron was wonderful. We stayed for a month. The owners were delightful to work with, and responded quickly and easily to all inquiries. The house itself was lovely and peaceful. Not luxurious, but very comfortable and cozy, with plenty of room for a family of four to spread out. The air conditioning was a blessed relief during a particularly hot Provence summer. The views from the terrace were breathtaking and when it wasn't too hot, we spent much of our time just relaxing, reading, playing board games, and eating on the terrace. The boulangerie (the good one, down the hill) was fabulous, and the Tuesday Market day was the source of many simple meals for us of cheese, bread, olives and roast chicken or pork loin. Also, don't miss the Friday market in nearby Lourmarin, which is much bigger and also great!

Cucuron itself is very quiet, which suited us nicely, but if you are looking for more action or things to do right at your fingertips, it may not be the place for you. Aside from the lovely L'Etang restaurant, we were also underwhelmed by restauant choices, and mostly went to nearby Lourmourin or Bonnieux to eat out. But for those who seek quiet, relaxation and peace in a rustic Provencale setting, this village and house are perfect!

With low cost airline flights to Marseille (e.g. EasyJet and Ryanair), Nimes, (Ryanair) and Avignon (FlyBE), why not consider a short break in Cucuron? Fast Eurostar and TGV links mean the train journey from London to Aix TGV station is just 7 hours and becoming competitive with the airlines . Car rental is widely available at airports and stations. Situated at the edge of the Luberon National Park, this is paradise for walkers and lovers of the outdoors. Nearby Lourmarin, designated one of the 'most beautiful villages in France', has a bustling Friday market. There are more villages to explore north of the Luberon including Bonnieux, Menerbes and Gordes. Yet the buzz and culture of the university town of Aix en Provence is only 40 minutes drive, with historic Avignon some 60 minutes away. For those who cannot resist the Mediterranean, the port and beach at Cassis is just over an hour. During the summer, check out the art exhibitions and music festivals which are arranged throughout the region.
