The peninsular of Istria is a gem on the scale of Cornwall but with a Mediterranean climate. Set among vineyards and olive groves in the hills of central Istria the house has views across open country with the church spires of other villages dotting the romantic landscape. Sitting in the middle of its own grounds the newly restored south facing house has gardens with walnut, figs and vines surrounding the 12 metre pool with summer house and sunbathing terraces. Local restaurants serve Istrian truffles with steak or fusilli, farm dried hams, sheep’s cheese, wild boar with pasta, raw fish gazpacho as well as sea food caught daily and fantastic local wines. Spend the morning by the pool and drive to the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic for the afternoon. On the way home you can visit the nearby Venetian hill towns to explore new restaurants.

How to get there: There are several routes:

There is a Ryanair service direct to Pula on Wednesdays and Sundays which gives the shortest transfer of 40 minutes to the villa.

Thomson fly from London Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester to Pula on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Ryanair also fly to Pula from Oslo (Norway) ,Brussells and Frankfurt in Germany.

Ryanair flies daily from London Stanstead to Trieste (2 hour transfer).

Easyjet, Ryanair and many other airlines fly to Venice and there is a daily boat run by Kompas or Venezialine from Venice to Porec. This can be booked through any local travel agent. Every day it leaves at 5 o'clock local time from Venice and on the return leaves Porec at 8 o'clock in the morning. A great way to include a day in Venice in the holiday.Otherwise you could drive from Venice to Istria in about 3 hours.

Just a quick update since our visit to istria

We thought the location and the house were wonderful - we have been on multi-family villa holidays for 20 years now, and this was close to the top of our league - well done!

Definitely the best pool we have had, and the pool house and shade were very welcome.

Top day-trips we recommend were to Groznjan, and to Rovinj + Red Island by boat.

About Gordana Fox

We are a Croatian/English couple so we have some inside knowledge of Croatia, its history and people. Also the best things to see and do as well as the visitor's needs and desires while on holiday. Gordana was a journalist at the BBC and Roger works in property, building and renovation. With our two kids we have spent many happy holidays at the villa which is perfect for families and groups of friends. We are based in London but we spend a few months a year in Croatia. Over the last few years the popularity of Istria has increased dramatically due not least to the Istrian truffle and fantastic local wine.

Gordana Fox purchased this villa in 2002

Why Gordana Fox chose Porec area

The country can be compared to Tuscany but it has the added advantage of being very close to the beautiful Adriatic sea. From the house you can drive to the seaside in 25 minutes. With Venetian hill towns, vineyards, sleepy villages and the beautiful coastline Istria offers everything for a perfect break.

For some culture;Pula has an extensive Roman centre including the amphitheatre overlooking the sea, while Rovinj and Porec were fortified Venetian ports. Inland, Motovun, Groznjan and Oprtal are fortified Venetian hilltowns.

For the energetic there are marked cycling trails around the tranquil country. Once the appetite is raised the restaurants serve a gourmet delight of homemade pasta with truffles, home cured ham [prsut] and a wonderful selection of fresh caught seafood daily.

At the villa the stars are brilliant and the sound of church bells carries on the cool night air.Its peaceful location means you can spend the day on the busy coast but return to the hills for some rural calm.

What makes this villa unique

We fell in love with our house for its elevated position above the village, peaceful location and over an acre of gardens. There are fantastic views from every window and from the loggia one can see Ucka, the highest mountain in Istria. We carefully renovated the house exposing the old stone and designing it in Istrian style with wooden shutters, traditional fireplace, loggia, stone arches and original wooden beams. We used local stonemasones, father and son, who have renovated some of the finest protected buildings in Istria. The house offers a peaceful location, stunning viewsand a large garden with a swimming pool to match.

Fantastic Villa

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic villa. We really had a wonderful holiday and loved the beautiful surroundings at the villa and the local countryside. We were on a month long holiday in Europe and our week at Villa Moncitta was without doubt the highlight. There was plenty of room for our group of 11 and the kids spent every waking hour playing in the large beautifully clean pool. The packet of information and all of the other background information about the local area was invaluable. Having never been to Croatia before we now sound like the tourist board and have been recommending a visit to all of our friends back here in the USA. We will definitely be back.

Amazing villa and great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great holiday at this villa and would definitely go back. We found that the owner was very helpful and accommodating from the initial enquiring through to the end of our stay.

The villa was well presented and clean on arrival. We found that there was plenty of room for all of us in the living areas, bedrooms and garden. It's located in a quiet village in Istria close to the sea and hill towns, so is ideal for visiting both.

A great property

  • 5 of 5

Villa Moncitta was an ideal place in which to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with the family. There were 14 of us - 3 generations, 8 adults, 2 teenagers and 4 between 7 and 11, and everybody enjoyed the villa which is as lovely as it looks and everything we needed was supplied - including being very well equipped for preparing food for large groups. Fine weather meant we were able to eat al fresco at the villa all the time. When we ate out, we found that restaurants were happy to cater for 14 people, though it made sense to give advance notice. We enjoyed traditional Istrian food at a nearby agrotourism farm . There were plenty of interesting places to visit - we enjoyed seeing the Roman remains of the Basilica at Porec, and the nearby hilltop villages especially Groznjan. The children enjoyed the beaches, in particular balancing on a floating bouncy castle at Porec.

The large well maintained pool was a very important part of the holiday and we usually spent half of every day relaxing near the house. We stayed up very late one night watching an electrical storm from the top balcony - a magical experience. Plenty of information was supplied at the house, and a person was on hand for any queries. Contact directly with the owner by email or phone was easy. We thoroughly recommend the villa as a holiday venue.

Relaxing stay for three families

  • 5 of 5

We had two weeks of great relaxation in Villa Moncitta, and everybody in our group (ages from 2 to 77 years) had a good time. The pool was cooling on warm days, Alto in nearby Mocibobi provided us with great pizza and Motovun had spectacular views.

Will definetly return someday

superb villa

  • 4 of 5

"We were 17 persons celebrating our wedding in the villa. The house was absolutely gorgeous with enough space for also a quiet moment in a bigger group.

The big pool was an absolute hit amongst the children as well as the adults.

No matter where we needed help or had questions there was always helpful people to guide us.

We would be very happy to return to Villa Moncitta and can definitely recommend it to anybody who wants to have a vacation in beautiful surroundings in an absolutely top notch villa".

We are definitely going back to this villa!

  • 5 of 5

Villa Moncita lives up to it's description exactly.

It is a beautiful period villa in an unspoilt hamlet set in attractive gardens. It has the benefit of a large, inviting swimming pool.

The accomodation within the villa is tastefully designed with bedrooms large and airy and living rooms similiarly proportioned. With a large family this was ideal.

Getting to the property was easy by car from Pula airport, all information provided by the owners was excellent.

Once there we quickly relaxed into our holiday, enjoying the recommendations, by the owners, of local sights to visit and reaturants to sample. All information can be found in a large visitor guide in the living room.
