Leilani Sim-Godbehere purchased this estate in 1995
I love both these houses and have lived many years in both of them until I had to move away. I enjoy sharing there uniqueness and beauty with our guests.
We just spent a wonderful week in Oahu on this beautiful estate. Here is my review:
• Gorgeous property in a beautiful location, with amazing views.
• The wood on the house is incredible and it is filled with amazing artwork. There is also a very large and comfortable lanai. It was a perfect house for family members to gather and we really enjoyed the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. What a show!
• There is easy access to all parts of the island from this location, whether you want to head to the crowded North Shore or catch a show in Honolulu.
• Beds were comfortable with clean smelling soft sheets.
• Beautiful birds everywhere in the yard. Fruit trees and lush landscape.
• The property was very hard to find in the dark. This caused a lot of stress so please be sure and ask for mileage instead of landmarks when coming. If it’s at night, it’s very dark, in the country, so you won’t see the landmarks. Also my phone would not pick up the house address on it’s navigation. That would have made a big difference.
• There are no instructions for the house anywhere. Five remotes for the TV and only one worked and this was after WE had to call the television company be told how to use the TV and which remote. The owner/manager did not have answers for us on this which seemed strange. She did give us the number to call the cable company.
• The home is so beautiful and yet the walls are dirty and inside drawers are broken, old items. Things don’t look taken care of, mold on fridge door and a rusted broken fridge in the laundry room. Be aware if you have kids so that no one climbs into it. Many of the window blinds are broken.
• Downstairs bathroom has a water pik shower head that broke twice and fortunately was put back together by my mechanic husband. Also to use the shower you have to know to pull down the tab on the bottom of the water spout. I hadn’t see this before.
• The pillows on the beds are the flattest pillows I have ever put my head on.
• No hangers provided in the closets for your stay.
• The cover on the ironing board was the most disgusting and old, crumbling so I ironed on a table.
• No grill of any type for cooking outside on the beautiful lanai with the gorgeous view.
We would stay here again, for sure, if the house was cleaned up and shown some love.
Bali Kai was such a great place to stay that I almost don't want to review it, so I can book it whenever I want. Living in Orange County, California I've often found that Hawaii is overrated and Honolulu, Oahu is described as the Los Angeles of the islands. So I had no great expectations when I was trying to find a place on Oahu that I would enjoy during my friend's wedding. My fiancée found this estate and everything looked great. I honestly was a little worried that it was too good to be true. I'm a worrier and I was completely nervous until I entered the gate code (my fiancée always thinks everything will work out, so she wasn't ever worried - kudos to her). When that gate pulled back and I saw (not only that I wasn't being deceived, but) it was better than any of the pictures on here... I knew we would be back.
The home is beautiful and comfortable. There are neighbors, but I never saw them. The mornings are beautiful to watch the sunrise (we ate on the patio every morning). The property owner was not available, however, her mother came by the next day to welcome us and check out any needs on the property. The only thing we noticed was that we didn't seem to have hot water, but that was remedied by turning on the water heater (they did it, not us). This is such a gorgeous location and very private. If you've been to Oahu you know that there are crowds of people and everything is so "touristy". Bali Kai is the opposite of Honolulu (in fact, you pass numerous homemade signs from locals protesting any hotels in this area of the island - I was happy and sad at the same time). Bali Kai is a little difficult to find the first time, but after that it's like home.
Pro tip - Stay away from the touristy waterfalls and search on Yelp for a waterfall near the house. I won't disclose the actual waterfall location (it's more of an adventure for you to find it on your own), however, I will tell you that the hike begins at the dead end of a street and through a gate that warns you not to trespass.
Extra pro tip - Hit the Costco in Honolulu after you land to stock up on food. Bali Kai has an inviting kitchen that's worth using.
To the owner - thank you so much for trusting everyone you lend your home to. We tried to leave it better than we found it (which was hard to do). I hope everyone respects your home as much as we did so it's available for future trips!
We rented the Bali Kai Estate for our wedding and we were absolutely blown away by this amazing home! We rented Bali Kai site unseen for our special day, and Lailani was so accommodating and attentive to making sure that Bali Kai was going to be right for us. As someone who researches heavily I had read some negative comments from past renters about Bali Kai, all of which were unwarranted. This place is perfect.
When we arrived at the property we walked through the gateway and were immediately transfixed by the site around us. From the mountains to the left, the ocean in front of us, and the view down over Kāne‘ohe Bay to the right, we knew our wedding was going to be very memorable. This place is one of a kind!
Our 5 night stay at the home was very comfortable, and walking up with the sun to perfect views made coming home very depressing. Our wedding went off without a hitch, and we will definitely be back to Bali Kai in years to come.
Thank you Leilani for this beautiful property. The house has it all, and you will not be disappointed. Definitely recommend.
We were blown away by this well cared for home and grounds. The pictures do not do it justice. This was the perfect place for our family vacation. Easy drive to all activities. Plenty of room for everyone to relax be it inside or out. The house is well appointed with everything to insure a comfortable stay. Leilani is a gem of a hostess and an expert communicator. We hope to visit again.
Beautiful home with well maintained yard.
We stayed with three couples here. The house is very noisy, the flushing of the downstairs bathroom could be heard throughout the home and on rainy days it was also very loud.
The place really needed cleaning. It appeared that it hadn't been used in some time and was dusty, dirty. Bathrooms weren't clean and had dried toothpaste in the sink and hair in the shower. For the price you pay, would expect it to be spotless.
While we enjoyed our time on the island very much, next time would choose different accommodations.
This beautiful house exceeded our expectations by far! The amazing sun deck for relaxing and watching the sun rise from the ocean and the stars at night, the luxorious equipment, the spacious lawn running down to the water. The kitchen is fully equipped, so that we didn't have to go out. The location is a perfect starting point for trips to discover Oahu. We will definitely return if we find a chance - the owner Leilani kept a constant lovely contact to us during preparation, our stay and afterwards.
Java Kai is away from it all but when you want city action Honolulu and Waikiki is only 35-45 minutes away. Airport is 30-35 min drive. Nearest grocery store is Times Supermarket at 7 min drive south to Koolau Shopping Center. There is a MacDonalds on the entry as well as Consolidated movie theaters, gas, and other restaurants, shops. Kaneohe town is less than 15 min drive and has lots more shopping options and the Windward Mall. Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center has Safeway, Longs, Walgreens, Blockbuster, multiple restaurants, Jamba Juice, Starbucks, banking, and gas station. The mall has Macy's, Sears, food court, restaurants, great shopping, and Consolidated movie theaters. Kailua Beach and town is 25 min drive south. Kailua has great eateries, shopping, and sandy family beaches and is world renowned for great windsurfing. Within 10 minutes drive visit Senator Fong's Plantation, Hart and Tagami Galeries for amazing art and gardens in Kahaluu, Byodo Temple, in Temple Valley.
