This private property is beautifully landscaped from the entry to the upper gardens and lily pond, all the way down the great lawn to the shoreline where Kaneohe Bay beckons. Leilani Sim-Godbehere purchased this estate in 1995
I love both these houses and have lived many years in both of them until I had to move away. I enjoy sharing there uniqueness and beauty with our guests.
The property is convenient to southern Oahu as well as North Shore. We found it clean and comfortable for our family of 5. Clear directions and instructions were provided by the owner. She may want to provide instructions for the garbage disposal in the kitchen. It was unplugged, and given the number of switches for fans and lights, was somewhat confusing at first. The kitchen is adequately stocked for meal prep--cookware, silverware, serving. Seating for 4 at the dining table, but seating for six would have been appreciated. Of the three bedrooms, the two downstairs are quite comfortable and free of highway noise. The upstairs bedroom is subjected to constant highway noise, and is the reason I cannot give this property a higher rating. I would recommend this property to the right party--those who only require two bedrooms. There are adequate towels and linens, plus a washer/dryer. Outside is pleasant--both the deck and the downstairs lanai. The star fruit tree had ripe fruit, some of which was dropping and rotting. Some might find this unpleasant--both odor and sight--on a seasonal basis. The views were pleasant from the living/dining room, kitchen as well as the deck. Lawn games would be fantastic on the gigantic lawn--frisbee, croquet or badminton.
This property is very convenient to the Polynesian Cultural Center, Kualoa Ranch and the North Shore. We found several beaches within easy driving distance. Everyone recommends Seven Brothers restaurant--there are two locations relatively close. The food is quite tasty. The Shrimp Shack seemed a bit spendy, but is tasty as well.
We did visit Pearl Harbor--be sure to check out the web site for details. We opted to see all of the sites via the Pearl Harbor Passport deal. In hind sight, given how much we've seen on the West Coast (ships, submarines and aviation museums), we would opt to just visit the Arizona memorial and associated museum. The tickets are free for those, with an assigned time to visit the Arizona Memorial. You won't know your time until you obtain tickets; if you arrive early, your time will be earlier in the day. We went in at about 9:30, and our scheduled visit time was 12:45. Do try the pineapple soft serve at the Dole Plantation.
We stopped at Costco in Honolulu on day 1 of our trip. The parking lot is CRAZY to negotiate. We found other grocery stores, one south and two north of the property. Bring your own bags!
Overall, this is a good home base for exploring Oahu.
This property is amazing and the home is unique. Outstanding views and gorgeous lawn. However the property should have been cleaned before our arrival, the house had obviously been sitting empty for quite a while before our arrival, there was build up all throughout the house especially on the floors. Most disgusting was a large colony of dead spiders in the down stairs bathroom, at least 20. Also the down stairs shower did not work, the part to switch on the shower was completely missing. This makes getting everyone ready in the morning a bit difficult with only one working shower for 5 people.
Group of 6, enjoyed ever last minute of our stay. House was clean, the style of the interior was awesome, all the facilities we needed were there and then some. We had an amazing time, next time I come to Hawaii I will stay there again!
My family and I had an amazing time here!! The house is beautiful and the views of the mountains and ocean are absolutely stunning. Can't wait to come back!
We just spent a wonderful week in Oahu on this beautiful estate. Here is my review:
• Gorgeous property in a beautiful location, with amazing views.
• The wood on the house is incredible and it is filled with amazing artwork. There is also a very large and comfortable lanai. It was a perfect house for family members to gather and we really enjoyed the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. What a show!
• There is easy access to all parts of the island from this location, whether you want to head to the crowded North Shore or catch a show in Honolulu.
• Beds were comfortable with clean smelling soft sheets.
• Beautiful birds everywhere in the yard. Fruit trees and lush landscape.
• The property was very hard to find in the dark. This caused a lot of stress so please be sure and ask for mileage instead of landmarks when coming. If it’s at night, it’s very dark, in the country, so you won’t see the landmarks. Also my phone would not pick up the house address on it’s navigation. That would have made a big difference.
• There are no instructions for the house anywhere. Five remotes for the TV and only one worked and this was after WE had to call the television company be told how to use the TV and which remote. The owner/manager did not have answers for us on this which seemed strange. She did give us the number to call the cable company.
• The home is so beautiful and yet the walls are dirty and inside drawers are broken, old items. Things don’t look taken care of, mold on fridge door and a rusted broken fridge in the laundry room. Be aware if you have kids so that no one climbs into it. Many of the window blinds are broken.
• Downstairs bathroom has a water pik shower head that broke twice and fortunately was put back together by my mechanic husband. Also to use the shower you have to know to pull down the tab on the bottom of the water spout. I hadn’t see this before.
• The pillows on the beds are the flattest pillows I have ever put my head on.
• No hangers provided in the closets for your stay.
• The cover on the ironing board was the most disgusting and old, crumbling so I ironed on a table.
• No grill of any type for cooking outside on the beautiful lanai with the gorgeous view.
We would stay here again, for sure, if the house was cleaned up and shown some love.
Bali Kai was such a great place to stay that I almost don't want to review it, so I can book it whenever I want. Living in Orange County, California I've often found that Hawaii is overrated and Honolulu, Oahu is described as the Los Angeles of the islands. So I had no great expectations when I was trying to find a place on Oahu that I would enjoy during my friend's wedding. My fiancée found this estate and everything looked great. I honestly was a little worried that it was too good to be true. I'm a worrier and I was completely nervous until I entered the gate code (my fiancée always thinks everything will work out, so she wasn't ever worried - kudos to her). When that gate pulled back and I saw (not only that I wasn't being deceived, but) it was better than any of the pictures on here... I knew we would be back.
The home is beautiful and comfortable. There are neighbors, but I never saw them. The mornings are beautiful to watch the sunrise (we ate on the patio every morning). The property owner was not available, however, her mother came by the next day to welcome us and check out any needs on the property. The only thing we noticed was that we didn't seem to have hot water, but that was remedied by turning on the water heater (they did it, not us). This is such a gorgeous location and very private. If you've been to Oahu you know that there are crowds of people and everything is so "touristy". Bali Kai is the opposite of Honolulu (in fact, you pass numerous homemade signs from locals protesting any hotels in this area of the island - I was happy and sad at the same time). Bali Kai is a little difficult to find the first time, but after that it's like home.
Pro tip - Stay away from the touristy waterfalls and search on Yelp for a waterfall near the house. I won't disclose the actual waterfall location (it's more of an adventure for you to find it on your own), however, I will tell you that the hike begins at the dead end of a street and through a gate that warns you not to trespass.
Extra pro tip - Hit the Costco in Honolulu after you land to stock up on food. Bali Kai has an inviting kitchen that's worth using.
To the owner - thank you so much for trusting everyone you lend your home to. We tried to leave it better than we found it (which was hard to do). I hope everyone respects your home as much as we did so it's available for future trips!
Java Kai is away from it all but when you want city action Honolulu and Waikiki is only 35-45 minutes away. Airport is 30-35 min drive. Nearest grocery store is Times Supermarket at 7 min drive south to Koolau Shopping Center. There is a MacDonalds on the entry as well as Consolidated movie theaters, gas, and other restaurants, shops. Kaneohe town is less than 15 min drive and has lots more shopping options and the Windward Mall. Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center has Safeway, Longs, Walgreens, Blockbuster, multiple restaurants, Jamba Juice, Starbucks, banking, and gas station. The mall has Macy's, Sears, food court, restaurants, great shopping, and Consolidated movie theaters. Kailua Beach and town is 25 min drive south. Kailua has great eateries, shopping, and sandy family beaches and is world renowned for great windsurfing. Within 10 minutes drive visit Senator Fong's Plantation, Hart and Tagami Galeries for amazing art and gardens in Kahaluu, Byodo Temple, in Temple Valley.
