About Tom and Loretta

Tom has lived in the southern Adirondack area his whole life and Loretta grew up on Long Island. Despite our different backgrounds, we both share a love of the outdoors and nature.

Why Tom and Loretta chose New York

This property has been in Tom's family for many, many years. It has been completely renovated. Our goal is to provide a memorable getaway for all of our guests. We are very attentive to special requests and provide a 'Welcome Book' that is full of information on 'things to do' in the area. We are meticulous when it comes to the cleanliness of the cabin and we believe there is everything there that our guests would expect for a stay.

What makes this house unique

The property gets plenty of sunshine throughout the day. The property has lake rights and access is very close. We offer kayaks, bicycles, snowshoes, hammock, fire pit and we supply the wood! No additional costs for these amenities. There are many bears inside the cabin. One of our previous guests even left us count of every bear in every room!

Lovely cabin in the Adirondacks

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a 3-night stay in this cabin. It was so relaxing and refreshing! The description was right on with one tiny exception -- the cabin does not have a dishwasher. It was not a big deal at all for us (there were only 2 of us), but if you are expecting a dishwasher, you are it. :)

Everything else was just as the description lists. We used the kayaks every day, sometimes more than once -- the lake is very close and the kayaks are on these wheeled contraptions that makes it very easy and convenient to walk them the distance of about 2 city blocks to the lake and put them in. We also rode the bikes and used the fire pit. And if you like stars at night, there are a huge number of them in the Adirondack night sky! We even saw shooting stars! There are also many great hiking trails nearby. We hiked the nearby Auger Falls (a short hike to a beautiful waterfall) and Goodnow Mountain, which is further away, but has a fire tower at the top with really great views of the high peaks to the north. The owners had placed many helpful brochures and maps in the cabin to help in our decision making about where to go and what to do.

We ended up driving the 12 miles north to Speculator for groceries (at Charlie John's) and eating our way through restaurants around the Wells area. We found that some restaurants/stores in the area only took cash and not credit cards, but some establishments do have ATMs located right in the restaurant for convenience sake.

So, to sum up, this is a wonderful, clean cabin with lots of fun amenities in a stunningly beautiful location. This was probably one of our best trips because I didn't have to worry about much of anything! Thanks, Tom and Loretta!

had a great stay

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was wonderful, but the weather did not cooperate. We were so excited to have the lake and the kayaks, but the 70 degree weather didn't allow us to take advantage of these things. The cabin itself was perfect, exactly what we had looked for. It was meticulously kept and it is obvious that Tom and Loretta take great pride in the cabin. We spent a great deal of time driving - Lake Placid and Lake George, and tended to only be in the cabin at night. Their movie library was our nightly activity before bed, and listening to the wildlife with the windows open while we slept was amazing.

Best Relaxing Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

The Lazy Bear Cabin was better than we expected, the pictures don't do this place justice, once you walk onto the property you feel at home. Walking distance to a beach, short drive for an awesome breakfast at Over Rock Cafe... Everything was perfect :) and all recommended local restaurants were a HUGE hit. Highly recommend staying here, and we may do the same next year too! Thank you Tom & Loretta, for a memorable and lovely vacation.

An amazing gem for a great price

  • 5 of 5

In general the cabin itself is amazing! First, the cabin was super clean!!!! The beds were comfy and the kitchen was very well equipped. There was a queen bed in the master with TV, a full bed in the second bedroom on which we put to sleep our 7 and 5 year old boys and a folding single bed for another adult. We asked and received a good pack N Play for our 1 yr old son. Bathroom was super clean with plenty of extra towels. The living room had games for the whole family, cable TV and some books on hiking in the area. The laundry room had a good washing machine and dryer and also a clapboard with life jackets for the kayaks. In the garage there were two kayaks with two carts that allow you to pull them all the way to the lake. Also in the garage there were beach chairs, outdoor games for the family, grill equipment and three fishing rods and a fishing box with everything required.

In the yard there were hammock, picnic table, four Adirondack chairs, a fire pit with plenty of complementary wood!! And a nice charcoal BBQ grill.

The three drawbacks of this cabin:

1) the hot water supply is provided by a 30 gallon electric tank that tends to empty out after two short showers. This means that for a family of five you have to budget a 30 min break after the first two to let the water get hot again.

2) the town is very small so it doesn't have a super market and you have to drive either 20 min south or north to the closest ones. There was also an issue to get a fishing licenses so I suggest to purchase them in Walmart before coming

3) the house is not on the lake but a five minutes walking distance from it

I gave it five stars despite the above three points because the cabin is so well equipped that it more than compensated for these drawbacks. Tom and Lauretta are super nice and responded quickly to any question I had at any hour.

Highly recommend

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed our cabin and your vacation overall. It sounds like you had a lovely time! We have previously had families over the years stay at the cabin and have not received any feedback on lack of hot water so we will look into that. One of the nice things about Wells is that it is a quaint town...away from it all which most of our guests are looking for. In both our Welcome Book, which we send to all our guests prior to arrival, and the Hospitality guide we provide information on obtaining fishing licenses so our guests can plan ahead. Also provided is information on grocery stores and recommendations to stop prior to coming into Wells, drug stores and other locations that we feel our guests would be interested to know about. Our lake access right of way is across the street from the cabin, but as mentioned the beach area is a very short walk (less than 5 minutes) and with the beach chairs, beach towels, flotation noodles and cooler bags we have for our guests, it is an ideal spot to spend a nice sunny day.

More than expected

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for 7 days with 4 adults and 2 children and couldnt have been happier. I had the pleasure of meeting tom personally and was great guy. The entire house is like brand new inside and out. Very centrally located only few mins from beach, store etc. All in all could not have been happier with quality of rental property as well as owner would definitely consider making this a yearly vacation spot.
