Pack your bags and treat yourself to total rest and relaxation at Casa Colibri (Humming Bird House) a lovely beach house situated at Costa Cumana one of Puerto Escondido's most exclusive communities.

This lovely architecturally designed home is literally on the golden sand beach which stretches for kilometers in either direction. Built for comfort and relaxation, Casa Colibri is beautifully decorated and landscaped, yet is family friendly. Call us today, its as simple as that!

Costa Cumana is an ecological beach resort just outside of Puerto Escondido.

Fronting directly on to the beach, Casa Colibri is the place to watch the waves, count the pelicans, enjoy the mantas that dance in the surf and 'ooh' and 'aah' at the dolphins and whales that make regular appearances. The beach is an active nesting area for turtles and if you are lucky you will get to see a 'nido' or turtle nursery as the baby turtle’s hatch and make their way to the sea.

Casa Colibri is a perfect rental for families with kids; girlfriends on 'retreat' or anyone who wants to escape the hustle & bustle of day-to-day life and soak up the sun, sleep in a hammock, sip margaritas in the pool or walk the beach at sunset. Our wonderful staff, Pablo, Juana and Mauricio will take great care of you!

Humming Bird House is great for families. The outdoor living space and dinning area allow you to soak up the heat whilst staying in the shade (and keeping an eye on your kids)! The kitchen is fully equipped and opens to the palapa so if you are cooking you can hang out with your friends & family. Our beautiful palapa is the heart of the home providing indoor/outdoor living. With a constant light breeze from the ocean, and two overhead fans this is a delightful space. Lounge on the comfy bancos, hang out in the hammock swing, watch the waves and count the dolphins!

The house comes with two pools - a back garden pool and a large pool facing the beach. Choose where you want to spend your time!

The master bedroom is light and airy and sophisticated featuring a King-sized bed, lounge area and gorgeous onyx lighting . With an en-suite bathroom, plenty of closet space and a lovely private patio- which is perfect for morning coffee - this space is bound to please. Wake to the morning sun and sleep to the sound of the ocean. Patio doors open directly on to the ocean at the front and and on to the pool to the right.

The guest bedroom features two queen sized beds, a large closet and a safe. With its own private patio, and a great view of the beach, this is a relaxing space for your family or friends. With both air-conditioning and an overhead fan it is wonderfully cool on the those hot Mexican nights. The guest bathroom is cool and calming featuring plenty of cotton towels, and all the amenities you would expect.

The media or TV room is a multi-purpose space. By day it is a work space or TV room. There is a flat screen TV, Sky satellite, internet, DVD player, IPod Dock and space for two computers. With double doors at both ends, during the day you can open it up and make it part of the outdoors. At night it converts to another bedroom comfortably sleeping two adults and one child. With air-conditioning and an overhead fan this is a cool comfortable space at night.

All bedrooms have Sealy pillow top mattresses and 100% cotton sheets. Whilst the bedrooms and media room have air conditioning all of the rooms have ceilings fans - so you never get too hot! With two bedrooms in the main house (1 with a King, 1 with 2 Queen’s), a media room that can comfortably sleep two and a single bed that can be placed in any room as required there's space to spread out!

The kitchen is clean, bright, comfortable and functional - the owner is a foodie and always makes sure to leave the pantry with some of the basics you'll need for your stay - olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar and some spices. Bottled water is provided, the fridge produces ice on demand, and there is a second fridge to hold all those important beverages you'll want to keep cold! Our housekeeper is a wonderful cook and worked at a restaurant for many years, she is available to cook at an extra cost, give us a call to find out more!

The pool deck provides both sun and shade. The pool is designed to be family friendly with a lovely shallow area for toddlers. The pool can be seen from everywhere in the palapa, so children can be in view but not underfoot. With sun loungers and hammocks and fabulous views of the ocean, this is where you'll spend much of your time soaking up the rays and enjoying a cold Corona.

The sunset bench is the perfect place to sit and sip aperos, snack on appies and watch the magnificent sunsets

Our staff is available during the day. Pablo takes care of the landscaping and pool, and Juana takes care of the house keeping, including your laundry, the dishes, and cleaning. They are both super sweet and helpful. There is a laundry room with a washer, dryer and iron - so no need to pack too much!

Our manager Mauricio is fluent in both English and Spanish and he and his team are available to ensure your stay is perfect offering first class concierge service. If you need something special, ask Mauricio he can help arrange:

Massages out on the patios

Manis and pedis

Yoga in the sun

Deep sea fishing

Dolphin watching

Lagoon kayaking tours

Birdwatching at Manialtipec with a naturalist

Paddle board or surfing lessons

Cooking classes

Market tours

Taxis in to town

Whilst many people rarely leave the house, Casa Colibri is just 10 minutes from Zicatela beach and all that Puerto has to offer - surfing, deep sea fishing, bird watching, kayaking, and dolphin watching, sailing, and hiking.

Puerto is home to loads of good restaurants (everything from Japanese, Argentinean, Italian and of course Mexican) and oodles of fresh seafood. The local mercado is a lively authentic daily market with everything from food to flowers to artesania available; and the Adoquin and Zicatela offer up lots of shopping.

Whether you want to listen to the ocean waves at night, relax in the pool, entertain under the large palapa in the spacious living/dining room areas, enjoy the sun in the poolside lounge chairs, or watch the sunset over the ocean, Casa Colibri and owners Penny & Joe welcome you, your family and your friends to a vacation you won't forget!

Casa Colibri offers the perfect vacation mix – sunshine, sea, and sand in a luxurious, relaxing setting with all that Puerto has to offer just 10 minutes away. We invite you to come and discover this wonderful part of southern México. Welcome.

About Penny Loome

Penny & Joe have lived and worked all over the world. They are both educators and currently own and operate their own education business on Vancouver Island, Canada and in Miami, Florida . They first came to Puerto in 1995 and fell in love with the area. After searching high and low for a location to build their dream retirement home they found themselves back where they started in Puerto Escondido in 2008 and after buying land began building in 2010. It was really important to them to build a house that had enough space that visitors and renters could find privacy, but also wanted it to have the feeling of a home not a hotel. With elderly parents and grandchildren it had to be not only family friendly but easy to get around. Penny and Joe love escaping to the peace and quiet that Cumana offers, and particularly love being so close to nature – seeing turtles, dolphins, whales and rays up close on a regular basis is a real treat. They also love exploring the local area. Oaxaca is rich in culture and is the centre for artesania in Mexico. Equally important, particularly to Penny, is the food! She loves to cook and is enjoying exploring the markets and learning to cook with new ingredients. The abundance of fresh fruit, produce and seafood is a definite plus. The house is pet friendly – we wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without our two dogs Gordo and Dushi, who have come to love the beach and playing in the waves as much as we do. Penny & Joe both speak some Spanish and are working hard at improving their fluency. Their staff Pablo, Juana and manager Mauricio who take care of the house and guests have been great at helping them with this goal

Penny Loome purchased this villa in 2008

Why Penny Loome chose Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port) is a unique location on the Pacific Coast in that it is an authentic Mexican town where tourism has developed slowly and organically. There are no ‘all you can eat’ inclusive resorts or high rise hotels. It is the destination of folks who are interested in the environmental activities the area has to offer (bird watching, hiking, climbing, kayaking etc), the surfing - Puerto has one of the most famous surf beaches in the world, the culture and the food. The town has all the fun amenities and activities you would want on vacation, but at the same time it is a relaxed and restorative place. We found Puerto in 1995 and are so happy to have a home here. There is so much to do, so many beautiful beaches and just enough foreigners with out feeling like you live in an expat enclave. There is a great mix of North Americans, Europeans and folks from across South America. It is great place to re-charge your batteries, but if you are up for adventure there are lots of places to visit from Oaxaca City to Hutaulco to the villages around Pinotepa Nacional or the coffee plantations in the Sierra mountains that frame Puerto. Oaxacan's also have to be the nicest people in all of Mexico!

What makes this villa unique

The endless sea vistas, the peace and quiet, the privacy all make Casa Colibri unique. Enjoy a siesta on the patio, or stargazing at night.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the hospitality that you, David and Macri have shown our family. We have enjoyed a lovely and very relaxing time at Casa Colibri. We loved watching the sunrise and set each day, and listening to the pounding of the waves! We enjoyed watching dolphins and whales swim by as we ate breakfast and the pelicans play in the surf all day. The kids spent countless hours in the pool and at the beach building sand castles and fairy houses in the sand. The big hammock was a favorite place for our baby to sleep and play. You truly have a family friendly layout!

Now we head back to the snowy north and will keep warm with our sunny memories of Mexico. We wish you all the best in your home and your little piece of paradise!

Many thanks again

Most amazing hide-away in Mexico

  • 5 of 5

February 2018

Dear Penny & Joe,

We have had the most amazing and relaxing time in your beautiful casa. How does one describe the feeling of tranquility that one quickly lapses into?

Our days have been spent being greeted by the endless sounds of surf pounding on the beach. The sea breeze is a perform foil to the relentless sun as we never suffered any oppressive heat throughout our entire stay here! The stars seen at night were spectacular for any star gazer.

Morning walks on the beach are a perfect prelude to a simple, delicious breakfast. No one will ever believe that during our entire stay here we have only ever seen few others out enjoying the surf & sand. No garbage anywhere! The pools are a quiet oasis from the busy surf at the beach.

Some of our favorite daily activities include where our next nap or siesta will occur. My personal favorite spot is the hanging Hammock under the main palapa! Chrissy and Kathy have enjoyed the two by the pool.

Of course, we have also enjoyed the native wildlife. We have made spotting a whale, dolphin or manta ray jumping like an Olympic sport. We have also enjoyed the local dogs for their relaxed, calm attitudes.

Our van is due to take us home to over 6” of snow in Vancouver. We will never forget our special time here and hope to return again soon!

Thank you for Juana and Pablo’s gracious assistance during our stay. They helped to make it a perfect holiday.

A beautiful place, a beautiful time

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Casa Colibri in the evening. We could hear the surf but couldn’t see it yet. What did greet us was a sky crowded with so many stars, even the Milky Way was visible, something astonishing to our city eyes.

This was just one of the many unexpected treats that marked our stay here. Each morning, the spectacular Pacific roared its greeting as pelicans glided in perfect formation over the rolling waves and the sun warmed away the night’s chill. While we sipped our coffees, Colibri's wonderful cook, Juana, would prepare a breakfast that was a feast for the eye as well as the tummy. Juana and the rest of the staff were always helpful and friendly and made every effort to untangle what we were trying to say with our terrible Spanglish.

As for the setting, the beach was practically all ours – miles of white sand dotted here and there with the footprints of a few other lucky souls who had managed to land here.

We are not “all-inclusive” resort seekers. We look for unique places, beautiful and interesting places when we travel. We’ve been to Mexico a number of times, but this was our first vacation on a Mexican beach and we were so happy to have had that experience here. It was soul-restoring.

The home is gorgeous, filled with comfortable nooks and crannies from which to watch the surf and relax. No doubt in our minds: We’ll be back!

Complete relaxation in an amazing setting!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to Casa Colibri and we just love it!! Private, perfectly appointed property and so comfortable with just the right amount of personal touches, while being wide open to the incredible beach, surf and views that this part of the Oaxacan coast uniquely offers.

If you are looking to get away from crowds and really relax, this is the perfect spot -- the lovely house has a variety of bedrooms and lounging spots (hammocks, couches, loungers on the beach), 2 pools, a great kitchen and dining room, all overlooking the beach. These were perfect for us - both when we went in 2016 as a family of four, then in 2017 as a couple (second honey-moon -- the teenagers stayed at home!).

There are miles of beautiful beach just steps from the house which are virtually your own -- it is an incredible undiscovered spot that only a few people know about so you can stroll and/or relax for hours in complete privacy. After 5pm, as the sun begins to set, a few more people emerge (often with lovely, friendly dogs!) -- a great time for a cocktail on the beach before dinner.

The house is beautiful with a nice balance of open and private spaces,. White stone floors, wood accents and natural features throughout - palapa roof, cotton and fine wool textiles, local ceramics as well as lush gardens and plantings around and within the house.

Down to basics: beds are super-comfortable (we slept SO well there), kitchen has every implement you need, fresh towels and linens are wonderful. Everything is spotless thanks to the attention-to-detail of the owners and their caretakers. Any question we had, the property manager and caretakers were available at a moment's notice which was nice.

FYI: Pounding surf is romantic during the day but at 3am you might appreciate some earplugs -- you are THAT close!

We appreciate the seclusion and privacy of Casa Colibri ....while also LOVING nearby Puerto Escondido, a vibrant town about 20 minutes away by car which holds amazing restaurants, shops, markets, famous surfing beaches and opportunities to engage with authentic Mexican life. We found people to be super friendly and welcoming -- despite our pathetic Spanish. You can find everything you need in Puerto, from yoga classes and tattoos to beach bars and blanket weavers to medical clinics and dollar stores -- super fun!

This is a great part of Mexico to visit and spend some time getting to know. Highly recommend Casa Colibri as a base to explore and/ or just relax.

Owner's Response: Hello Clare, Thank you so much for the lovely review! It makes us very happy that you enjoyed yourselves so much the first time, that you came back a second time. We are very lucky to have found such a lovely spot, and so happy when we have guests who truly appreciate not only the beautiful environment but also Puerto's laid back, funky beach vibe. We hope you and the family come back again. Penny

Well maintained and peaceful 'Slice of Paradise'

  • 5 of 5

My 2 week stay at Casa Colibri was outstanding! I enjoyed dining and relaxing in the open air living room and dining room - always comfortable with the breeze off the ocean and the ceiling fans. Having an air-conditioned bedroom made sleeping very pleasant. Juanita made delicious and fresh meals, and she and Pablo did a great job keeping the Casa maintained and in good order.

My favourite part was being able to relax in the sun with a good book, and then being able to slip into the pool, float about and cool off. Heaven! The Casa is beautifully decorated and well appointed - lots of options for where to relax...deck chairs...hammocks...bancos. The Media Room offered the option of TV, but, for me, I preferred to just read or listen to mellow music.

The wide, sandy beach, immediately accessible, provided opportunities for pleasant beach walks. It was fun to watch the pelicans fly in formation, skimming the waves, and sighting a pod of dolphins swimming close by the shore. I missed seeing the whales, ‘cause I’m not an early morning person. As Puerto Escondido is only 15 minutes away by car, it was easy to ‘go to town’ for shopping and dining.

For me, the experience was a blissful ’time-out’…like staying at my own ‘private’ resort. All needs taken care of and nothing to do but ‘go with the flow’ which was peaceful, easy, and relaxing. Again - a memorable and soothing experience… And, thanks to Penny and Joe for sharing their piece of paradise…a place I’d love to revisit... Highly recommended...

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed your time at Casa Colibri! It is like a private resort, isn’t it? We’re so lucky to have great staff in Juana and Pablo. Hopefully you’ll come back again and maybe, this time catch the whales!

Luxurious Villa & Casita with superb pools!

  • 5 of 5

We've rented many properties on Mexican beaches and this one is in a class by itself! It was well represented but the photos did not do justice to all the amenities - including the ocean proximity and amazing view of the surf. The main pool is large even without the attached wading pool (which is ideal for kids under 5). The new Casita pool offers another option for older kids or for star-gazing after kids are put to bed. There is plenty of lounging space for 10 and the beds are all very comfortable. We used the media room as a bedroom, too, and it was convenient to share the guest bathroom & shower since it opens to the hallway. Everyone had privacy and quiet solitude when they desired a nap. David and Macri were especially helpful and the owner was available by email daily to answer any and all questions. We managed fine with one small rental car for 11 people, by taking turns to town for groceries and small group outings. For transporting the entire group, we found taxis or a large van easy to summon. This is an ideal extended-family rental. It also worked well with 3 couples -- we did both. We flew into Puerto E. from Oaxaca and left via the Huatulco airport. Taxis and rental cars are both easy to arrange. There were some great restaurants and the owner provides a handbook with recommendations. We cooked (and BBQ'd) many meals and found the kitchen to be well-equipped. You can pack light -- it is wonderful swimming weather during the day and cool enough at night to sleep well. We'll return as soon as we can!!!
