Dream come true for Joshua Tree retreat

  • 5 of 5

Eagle Om Ranch surpassed our weekend getaway dream to Joshua Tree. The location is a bit out of the way, which was perfect for our plans. The house is well stocked with good quality kitchen tools, including good knives ( A BIG plus for ease of good meals). The decor is hacienda chic and outdoor spaces are comfortable. For our stay, the house is well appointed with all we needed.

We spent the afternoons on the tree shaded patio, moving from dappled shade to full sun as desired. Great place to nap and read, in late Winter desert breezes. We brought bird food, as others had recommended and were treated to a vibrant bird population. As a California Native Plant Society member, I was glad to see uses of native plants in the yard landscape, including chaparral ( flowering!) and the small ephemeral plants that show up after a desert rain. Wild life was all around, including a rabbit and coyote adventure, outside the fence.

Evenings included a meal by the outdoor fireplace and a drumming circle. The hot tub was toasty and easy to access. The house is super comfortable and had a great vibe, it is full of good spirit. Would recommend a good house broom for tidying up.

On one day of our stay, we had very windy weather, stayed inside all day, reading and writing. Good for the creative juices! Joshua Tree (Town), is easily accessible, with a drive. If the isolation gets a bit overwhelming, there are fun shops, a farmers market on Saturday and great coffee. The National Park is equally accessible with a drive, for a day trip to boulder or hike.

We woke predawn to watch the sunrise and see the changes of the desert landscape as the daylight gently emerged. The calm, contemplative space of Eagle Om Ranch, was a welcome break from the frenetic day to day of modern life.

An Idyllic Retreat for Desert Lovers & A Few Tips

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous property in a private, semi-remote setting. If you're the sort of person who likes an impersonal, immaculate hotel experience with room service and nearby convenience stores and malls, you might not like this place at all. If, on the other hand, you want to feel as though you're visiting the retreat of a fascinating friend, you're going to think you've found heaven. The photos don't do this lovely property justice. The interior is colorful, comfortable, and relaxed with a strong spiritual vibe (singing bowl, instruments, yoga mats, etc.). The exterior is gorgeous—stellar views and landscaping. You truly will feel like you've stumbled into a private home except that the linens are clean and beds made for you. (The owner and/or former guests have left personal care items in the bathroom, clothes in the dresser, food in the fridge, etc.) Depending on your personality, you'll either find this disconcerting or charming. (We found it charming.) Similarly, you'll likely love or hate the fact that you are far from your neighbors, must travel 3.5 miles of sandy road (we did this in a mid-sized Hertz rent-a-car and emerged dusty but unscathed) and are situated in a house without curtains (everything but the bathrooms is exposed to view). As a security-minded city-dweller, I admit I felt a little vulnerable, but I wouldn't change a thing and would return in a heartbeat. Many amenities—coffee maker and grinder, plenty of pans, toaster oven, juicer, (no microwave), large tiled showers, a working telescope, extra blankets. We were woken by spectacular sunrises each morning and from bed saw a rabbit, two feral dogs (who must have jumped the wire fence) and birds. At night, we stargazed from the hot tub in view of the outdoor fireplace. Tips (some of which have been mentioned by others): bring coffee, firewood, bird seed. (These may or may not be there from the last guests when you arrive.) Paper towels, foil, saran wrap, matches, as well as many spices and condiments were in place. (You might want to donate a few staples and treats for the next guests, as we did.) DO NOT trust GPS. Trust the owner's instructions. (Thanks to other reviewers we knew to do this and were glad of it.) Pick up your essentials before you drive out because this isn't the sort of place you'll likely want to leave more than once a day. Though it's not a bad drive into town and the park. At the end of our stay we found it very hard to leave. Thanks!

Has potential but falls short

  • 2 of 5

This little home has the potential to be a wonderful VRBO, but it certainly falls short. Upon arriving from a 10 hour drive to Joshua Tree in which my 6 year old had gotten sick in the car I was looking forward to doing a load of laundry...but the dryer was broken and there was no clothes line, so everything had to be laid flat on the picnic table. So tired and ready to rest, the beds all had beautiful blankets on top...but no top sheet on any of the beds, just a bottom sheet covering the mattress and a scratchy blanket on top. I'm not sure why all of the beds were missing sheets. Never stayed in a hotel or home designed like that. Then waking in the morning to what looks like a really nice coffee and espresso maker, with not a grain of coffee to be found anywhere. I had taken it for granted that coffee is a staple of a VRBO or hotel experience and should have brought my own. Also, the shower in the master bedroom has a cool, open design, but functionally fails. Water leaks through the tile lines and get the whole bathroom and bedroom floors wet.

We made the stay work, and you could certainly see the care and love in the home, but with several very basic things missing it definitely was not worth the price.

Magical desert retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Anthony is a great host - always accessible. The place is beautiful, the setting serene. The isolation was a huge plus for us. Our 22 year old kids thought it was heavenly and want to return with their friends. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It was hard to leave. We will definitely be back again.

Eagle Om is a great getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing! beautiful wide open desert space! the house is great and really well kept. Anthony was super nice and I would highly recommend this place if you're looking to get away. moonlight bonfires and star gazing nights are amazing! I would suggest getting all the groceries and supplies you'll need before you arrive as its pretty far from town. Getting there during the daytime would also be wise. nighttime can be quite hard to find the place. get written directions as well before you goes reception is pretty scarce till you get to the wifi at the house. the seclusion and quiet were everything we were looking for and we found it at Eagle Om Ranch.😄?☺️😄?☺️✌️👌?🏻?

Why Anthony Cupo chose Joshua Tree

I liked the space we had to work in. The area is very private, not many homes nearby. The open space, landscape, and views bring me back in touch with nature. We use the property for retreats and now want to share the space.
