The "Paddle House" is a charming Craftsman located in the historic Old Bend neighborhood just south of the downtown core. Our bungalow is just two short blocks from downtown shops, great restaurants and art galleries and only a 15 minute walk to the Old Mill District. The Deschutes River with Drake Park, hiking and biking trails, kayaking and tubing are just a short walk away also and the Mt. Bachelor ski resort is only a 30 minutes drive. Bend was named “America’s Best Trail Running Town” by the editors of Outside Magazine. The Safeway grocery store is only 3 blocks away and we are four blocks from one of the best bike rental shops in town.
Other amenities include a gas fireplace, gourmet kitchen, washer/dryer and two full baths with heated tile floors. We kept the original maple hardwood floors in the living room and yes, they still squeak, but they have been beautifully refinished. Each bedroom has a queen size bed with a memory foam topper and there is La-z-boy sleeper sofa in the living room with their top of the line mattress.
Our calendar is always up to date. Please check it for available nights.
Come be our guests and enjoy!
Sharon is a real estate broker and Mike is a general contractor. We both love craftsman style homes and renovating and remodeling. We live in San Diego but find Bend to be the perfect second home. Dave, our caretaker in Bend makes renting our place easy because of his attention to detail and prompt follow-up with our guests.
Mike Bythewood purchased this bungalow in 2006
We found Bend completely by accident. Our only experience with Oregon was visiting Brookings on the coast just north of the CA border and we found the stereotype of OR weather to be spot-on. Wet, chilly, even in the summer.
What we didn't know was the little advertised east slope of the Cascade mountain range is one of the most beautiful places on earth. On a ski / road trip in 2005 to visit friends in Vail and then Jackson, we were then headed to Florence, OR for a wedding. Fortunately for us our path took us directly through Bend. That was after spending the night in Burns and wondering how we didn't know there could be a desert in OR.
Anyway, we fell in love with the place. It was February and the weather beautiful! Stopping for gas we asked for directions to Mt. Bachelor. The station attendant who was wearing shorts, advised us not to head up to the mountain that day, because there were blizzard conditions. Yeah right, we thought. Bachelor only 20 miles away and it was nice and sunny in Bend.
To make a long story longer... the attendant was right. We started our journey and at mile 5, it started to snow. At mile 15 it was snowing REEEAALY hard. By the time we got to the resort parking lot we were in complete white-out conditions and could barely see to park.
Well, we had a very a nice lunch in the lodge, and, after a very short discussion, we decided skiing an unfamiliar mountain in whiteout conditions would probably not be wise. We resigned ourselves to return another day.
Resuming our trip to Florence, we were delighted to find little Hoodoo ski resort (two lifts) just west of Sisters. After two fun hours of skiing in clear conditions we still made the coast and Florence by 5:00 pm for the rehearsal dinner.
Our next trip to Bend was in the summer and that sealed the deal for us. The people, weather, community, dining, and outdoor life are everything we wanted for a second home. So we bought one!
THE END... and new beginning :-)

Summertime on the front porch talking to neighbors and passers-by. Walking to downtown restaurants and shops.
Hi Dave -
Thank you for the email. We had a wonderful time in Bend and the house was absolutely perfect!
Enjoyed our stay at your home. Decorated very cute and stocked well. Nights were cozy with the little gas wood stove. Look forward to staying here again.
This home was super cute, cozy and very well stocked to meet all our needs and then some. The little touches like the book filled with menus from all the local eateries (do not open when you are hungry!!) and maps was very much appreciated. The owners are very responsive and welcoming. And the location absolutely could not be beat! We were able to walk to everywhere. Drake Park, the Old Mill and historic downtown. And if you are a McMenamin’s lover…it’s literally right around the corner! And yet being right in the heart of it all, the neighborhood was super quiet and peaceful.
This cute airplane bungalow is in a great location. Just a short walk to shopping and restaurants. Lovely side deck to enjoy breakfast, and front porch rockers to relax. The kitchen is well equipped and even had paper products, sugar, etc. Great place to stay in Bend.
Loved this home! It was clean and nicely decorated with great space. Especially loved the location! Could easily get to Downtown or the Old Mill District.
We had a great time here. Close proximity to Old Mill and downtown. Clean place and we left the place clean as well. Would stay again but I'm anxiously awaiting my deposit return.
My mother and I drove up from CA with my daughter on a girl's only trip and we are so glad we did. The house was just what we ordered! So convenient to walk to downtown and Drake Park where we went for a walk every day. Close to grocery stores and a short 5 minute drive to the Old Mill section of town. Very easy to find the house and the property is stocked with everything you need for a great family getaway. So much nicer than staying in a hotel. We loved it so much that we have already booked another trip for next July. Bend is a great place to visit and staying at the Paddlehouse and not needing a car to get to downtown is such a bonus. Can't wait until next year.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT VRBO / HOMEAWAY CHARGES ALL RENTERS A VARIABLE "SERVICE FEE" WHICH WILL BE INCLUDED WHEN YOU REQUEST A QUOTE.
Here is VRBO / Homeaway's explaination of the service fee...
The service fee is paid by the traveler when booking through the HomeAway websites. This fee covers the cost of providing 24/7 customer support, enhanced site and mobile features for both owner and travelers, plus expanded marketing efforts to generate more exposure to global audiences. Additionally, when a traveler books and pays through HomeAway, they are eligible for the Book with Confidence Guarantee.
Paying the fee
Travelers pay the service fee by credit card when paying through the secure HomeAway checkout process. The service fee is only charged to the card once the booking has been accepted by the property owner or manager. The service fee is, on average, approximately 6% of the rental amount, excluding refundable deposit or taxes. This fee is lower than other travel websites that charge a similar fee.
Refunding the fee
The owner does not have the ability to discount or waive the service fee amount. The only time the service fee can be refunded is when an owner uses the Cancellation Refund feature from their dashboard and the cancellation is requested within the terms of the owner/manager's cancellation policy. However, if the reservation is not canceled and all payments fully refunded to the traveler, the service fee will not be refunded.
