The cozy cottage has a separate bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. It has reclaimed oak hardwood flooring throughout. The living room has a huge picture window looking out on one of the two ponds, horse paddocks and the vegetable garden. The kitchen features vintage tile counters, picture window over the sink and a small table and chairs for eating. There is also a dishwasher and washer/dryer. The bedroom features a queen sleigh bed. About John Ayers

I grew up in Bethesda, MD and after living in NYC and DC for many years, my wife and I moved to Middleburg to raise our children. Its a wonderful environment to raise kids and offers them a unique view of life living on a working farm.

John Ayers purchased this cottage in 1999

Why John Ayers chose The Plains

Our farm is set on the western slope of the Bull Run Mountains looking over Loudoun Valley toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has rolling hills, two ponds, two large barns, and a large forested area. We board horses, primarily three-day eventers, and run a grass-fed Angus cattle operation. In addition, we get eggs from our chickens and have a variety of domesticated and wild animals roaming through the farm.

What makes this cottage unique

The best part of the farm is being able to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of the countryside but still being close enough to Middleburg to enjoy its small town lifestyle. I especially love being able to see the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains every night. If you have a horse, we have stalls available for boarding. If you don't have a horse, we can also arrange for you to take a trail ride on our farm.

Experience Worth Taking

What an idyllic setting! Precious cottage with lovely amenties. Time stood still for a while. Horses out the window and our dog Lucy cautiously made new friends. There was a tv. That's all we can about that, questionable usage.

Owner's Response: Hi Evan, glad you guys enjoyed the Milk House and the farm. Sorry you weren't able to figure out the TV. We offer access to the streaming services via the TV. The instructions are in the document for the cottage. Hopefully you will stay with us again and I'll make sure to walk you through it. Cheers, John.

I had a wonderful and quiet weekend at this beautiful property.

Seemed like I was on the farm alone even though there was much activity. I would highly recommend this spot.

So serene and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

The owner was very attentive; answered emails and texts within minutes. Loved that we got to see the horses every day, all day. Our dog enjoyed being with us too. Very comfortable bed. Only wish there was a dresser and dining table, but we managed just fine. Great place to relax and recharge. Oh, very close to Manasas National Battlefield Park (site of Bull Run I and II). We spent two days looking at everything and then we enjoyed a lot of picturesque landscapes and animals as we returned to the Milkhouse. We would visit again if we return to Virginia.

Nice and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were very pleased to spend the weekend in the Milk House. Its located within a working farm, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Our host, John was an excellent communicator and responded to our emails very quickly. I would highly recommend this cottage for couple looking for a place to stay that is central to Middleburg and The Plains.
