The Milk House is a quintessential farm cottage. Set on a large horse and cattle farm near Middleburg, the cottage was completely renovated in 2015. The cozy cottage has a separate bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. It has reclaimed oak hardwood flooring throughout. The living room has a huge picture window looking out on one of the two ponds, horse paddocks and the vegetable garden. The kitchen features vintage tile counters, picture window over the sink and a small table and chairs for eating. There is also a dishwasher and washer/dryer. The bedroom features a queen sleigh bed. The bathroom has a brand new glass-enclosed, walk-in shower, pedestal sink, wainscoting, and toilet. The cottage has internet access.
There is also a small patio area to enjoy eating outside or just relaxing.
There are miles of hiking and biking trails out the front door. The cottage is set near the horse barns, where horseback riding is available for a separate fee. You can also bring your rod and fish in one of two ponds for blue gill or the occasional bass.
You can also explore the nearby towns of The Plains and Middleburg. There are fantastic antique stores, restaurants and shops. The area is known for its many vineyards and wineries, come take a tour and taste the many wines being made in this up and coming wine region. Be sure to try some of the homemade cookies and baked goods at the Upper Crust in Middleburg. There are many special events in the area too, such as steeplechase races, polo, the famous Middleburg Christmas parade, a film festival and lots more. Its the perfect place to come to relax and get away from the stress of the city.
I grew up in Bethesda, MD and after living in NYC and DC for many years, my wife and I moved to Middleburg to raise our children. Its a wonderful environment to raise kids and offers them a unique view of life living on a working farm.
John Ayers purchased this cottage in 1999
Our farm is set on the western slope of the Bull Run Mountains looking over Loudoun Valley toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has rolling hills, two ponds, two large barns, and a large forested area. We board horses, primarily three-day eventers, and run a grass-fed Angus cattle operation. In addition, we get eggs from our chickens and have a variety of domesticated and wild animals roaming through the farm.
The best part of the farm is being able to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of the countryside but still being close enough to Middleburg to enjoy its small town lifestyle. I especially love being able to see the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains every night. If you have a horse, we have stalls available for boarding. If you don't have a horse, we can also arrange for you to take a trail ride on our farm.
My wife and I were very pleased to spend the weekend in the Milk House. Its located within a working farm, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Our host, John was an excellent communicator and responded to our emails very quickly. I would highly recommend this cottage for couple looking for a place to stay that is central to Middleburg and The Plains.
This cozy cottage sits near a pond on a beautiful horse/ cow farm. The host was friendly, flexible, and professional. The bed was quite comfortable. The kitchen was a little small, but still had everything you would need for two people. The bathroom was very nice with heated floors.
We greatly enjoyed our stay. It was very quiet and relaxing. During the day, the landscape is gorgeous. Rolling hills, flowering trees, stone walls, horse pastures. The farm is vast. We took a two hour walk and saw new things the entire time. The evening is dark and quiet. Perfect for restful sleeping. The farm is located near many of the excellent VA wineries in Loudoun, Fauqier, and Prince William counties. We highly recommend saying here.
We stayed for two evenings. The cottage is beautifully done with modern comfort and amenities. The farm offers magnificent views, as well as plenty of places to wander to take it all in. It's only a few minutes to the Plains or Middleburg by car, and both towns feature a variety of unique shops and restaurants. We highly recommend the Stone House!
