IN AND AROUND PIZZO: The apartment is situated just south of the town and is a short, 10 minute walk, or (5 minute by car) to the main 'Piazza', or city square. Pizzo has a classic southern Mediterranean climate with sunshine and warm weather April through October, where you will find the water and sky are clear and brilliant blue. There are many seasonal festivals, local artists, produce vendors and weekly markets, where you can purchase anything from chestnuts to canaries! The locals are very friendly and will help those of you who are practicing your language skills. Pizzo and the surrounding towns have much to offer for all tastes. You may choose to wander the many winding streets of Pizzo, mingle with the locals where they gather in the Piazza for a refreshment, to people watch, and socialize. You may also choose to go sunbathing, or swimming in one of the local beaches, boating, touring to view the active volcano Stromboli, or take a day trip to one of the multitude of historic sites in the surrounding Hill-Top towns.
I especially love Pizzo because of the sea view, mountains, and its small town atmosphere, which reminds me a little bit of where I was born and raised. I work as a Registered Nurse and always dreamed of living in Italy, and now I am able to do this part time. I believe you can do what ever you really want to do if you set your mind to it.
Susan purchased this apartment in 2009
My Italian apartment is in Calabria and is nestled between a mountain to the east, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. Both very important to me. The property is in southern Italy, still very traditional in it's old Italian ways. Italian spoken here, little English. There is a local farmers market, bakery, butchers and small grocers. The people believe in family and tell me even a pizza is made for you with love.
I rent a car and take frequent day trips. I have especially enjoyed the mountains of Serra San Brunno. I have been to the Sila Mountains to a mushroom festival, to Paola to a chocolate festival, to Sicily several times, to Semanara where I viewed a famous Black Madonna, to Reggio Calabria to view the Riacci Bronzes. And many more... Learning Italian, Mediterranean Diet, Sunshine.......Sunshine............
Cappuccinos............ Local Fish for dinner,.........Gelato
in many flavors. Beautiful people, dinner invitations that start at 8pm and get over at midnight. Olive groves, and swimming at the sea.
Sue's apartment in Pizzo was perfect for our needs. It was very clean and as described with a beautiful view of the sea and Italian coastline, on clear days we could see Stromboli in the distance which was amazing! Nerissa (one of the property managers) was very helpful when we needed any advice and even bought us a few essentials (bread, butter etc) as we had a late night arrival. The apartment was very well equipped and having beach and pool towels provided meant we didn't have extra weight in our luggage, the hairdryer was a great addition too. It was spacious with a well equipped kitchen. I really liked the balcony, and the roof terrace was huge and great to relax on with interesting panoramic views. The apartment was air conditioned which was very much appreciated on the hotter days! We all loved the big pool and it was never overcrowded at any time, we always managed to get sun loungers and the other residents were friendly. I liked that an attendant cleaned the pool every morning and prepared the parasols and sun loungers, it was very well looked after. The apartment and surrounding area was very quiet. There is a railway line in front of the apartment block with trains running fairly frequently but It was not noisy and we found that they didn't disturb us at all.
It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk down into the Piazza. We really enjoyed the walk and found a very interesting route down through and in between the houses to the Piazza/square. One restaurant we visited (sorry cant remember the name) on several occasions as the food was delicious and the staff and service was excellent. They listened to our requirements and provided exactly what we had asked for. The restaurant is located as you look onto the square from the viewing platform on the left, the middle restaurant. All of the ice cream restaurants are very good and its definitely worth trying the tartufo.
We had many Tuc Tuc rides, the drivers are very friendly and made the journeys fun and exciting for the children. We also called on a lovely gentleman named Chicco who was our taxi driver. He was so happy, friendly and always made us laugh. He made every journey amazing and really made our boys holiday. I would definitely recommend Sue's apartment for a chilled and relaxing holiday.
Our family (children 14 & 10) spent a lovely week in Pizzo in July 2016. The flat is really nice and well equipped, as is the entire Borgonovo complex.
The biggest downside was distance from Pizzo center/services/beach. Although it's only maybe 2 kms, the road is poorly lit, part of it has no pavement and the altitude difference was quite high.
Fortunately our kids are quite good walkers, otherwise a car would have been a must.
And once we got used to the steep walk, life was sweet indeed :-)
Loved the property , adored Pizzo. Free beaches, not a sun bed concession in site ( Susan has sunbrellas and sand mats available. Food in Pizzo is good local fair, but could not find a "posh" restaurant for the extra special mean. All our postcards arrived before we got home. This is a first. Air conditioning was excellent ( my wife can't sleep well in the heat) Residence pool is excellent and clean
First of all, you are getting more than your money's worth when you go for this place.
Susie was just great. She set us up with her property manager who lives nearby, Tom, was equally helpful and easy to get along with as Susie herself. He helped us get propane, groceries, picked us up from the airport, took us to the train station, showed us where we could buy a SIM card for our phone, the list goes on...he really offered us peace of mind and got us settled in very comfortably, with smiles on our faces.
Susie's apartment was jus right. Two bedrooms, comfortable beds, air conditioning, nice little kitchen. Nice deck with an excellent view, and then you walk up the staircase to your own private, rooftop paradise. Great view. You can hardly tell where the sea meets the sky. Just stunning. We watched eight sunsets and every one was spectacular.
The property has a nice pool area, great for couples or a family, with plenty of room and very secure. Few blocks off the main road and the right distance from town to give you convenience without sacrificing privacy.
The weather was fantastic the whole time. It's no wonder Italians never vacation outside of Italy...
Troppea and Zambrone are only a few local train stops away. Beautiful, hardly occupied beaches in the peak of summer. Unbelievable!
We were on our honeymoon, so we were pretty happy to begin with, but this place really takes the cake. You get everything you expect and much more. This is great deal. We'll be back!
Lovely apartment; fully equipped kitchen; clean and well maintained. The roof terrace is a plus; wonderful view of the sea. Nice pool area. Excellent base for exploring the surroundings. Warm welcome from the property manager.
