Cozy cottage in the perfect location for all things at Acadia and Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

Affordable cottage a few miles from Bar Harbor. Nice place to relax and enjoy the park. The cottage is very close to many great hikes and carriage trails. Nice outdoor area to enjoy the weather and grill.

The only negative is the outdated TV; I could not connect my ipad or iphone to stream a movie (no hdmi). Otherwise, the cottage is great. I highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay. I just purchased an HDMI adaptor for the tv so hopefully guests will now be able to enjoy streaming movies from a smart device.....good suggestion. Thanks again!

Great location/very suitable accomodations

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the cottage for our honeymoon this past September. The directions and check in instructions were very clear. We loved the location of the cottage! It is conveniently located between two entrances of the park so we weren't required to drive the entire Loop Road if we wanted to take a quick visit to Thunder Hole. Also, the 10 minute drive into Bar Harbor was great - close enough, yet far enough away from the bustle of the town. For such a small place, there are so many great amenities included. We were glad for the free Wifi and especially thankful for the washer and dryer. Our one main disappointment was that we planned to grill a few of our meals. When my husband went out to start the grill for our burgers, he found that it was in total disrepair! The burners were broken and laying in the bottom so there was no way that we could even make do! I was not happy with eating a pan fried hamburger! But then, this makes for a good laugh when we tell our story to our family. :) We enjoyed sitting by the fire in the yard in the evening and the fact that fire wood was so convenient was nice. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage and would gladly return, but would not plan on grilling our dinners!

Owner's Response: Congratulations and thanks again for choosing our cottage for your honeymoon stay on MDI. my apologies for the grill. If we had known, we would have replaced it in a second. I certainly would want a working grill on vacation and will be sure to replace the grill with a new one. We want all of our renters to have the best vacation and will do our best to make sure that happens. Thanks again for your kind words. We are so happy you enjoyed your time here.

Great location.

  • 3 of 5

I found this property and chose it based on the stellar 4 and 5 star reviews. Everyone seemed so pleased with it, and the pictures looked nice. Unfortunately, my family and I were slightly disappointed with the accommodations.

The positives: we loved the location. There was great access to all parts of Acadia and Bar Harbor was just a short drive away. There was rarely road noise from Rt 3 at inconvenient times, even though we were right off of the road. We also liked the full kitchen. Even though the appliances are compact in size, they were great to have, and we cooked meals a couple of times in the cottage. It was nice to have a washer and dryer and A/C!

The negatives: We were disappointed in the quality of some of the things and the way the cottage was kept. I don't know if some things were in disrepair because it was the end of the season, or if that's the standard, but I can only report on my experience.

The doors didn't lock properly, in that the dead bolts didn't align with the holes in the door jams, on either door. This was frustrating, because while we didn't feel unsafe, we still liked to lock our doors because we don't know the area. We wound up just locking the lock on the knob, which isn't really very secure, but we didn't have any problems.

The toilet paper rack was falling off the wall.

The sleeper sofa was less than comfortable. Our 4 year old slept on it, and I kind of felt bad for her. I wound up sleeping with her one night, and it was a pretty rough night.

The dryer didn't have a vent. So if you ran the dryer the whole place got REALLY hot!

Finally, everything was sort of mismatched. The linens, the towels, the dishes, the silverware and even the decor. I kind of felt like everything was thrown together with left overs from another place, or things purchased second hand. It just didn't give off a very welcoming feel. (Believe me, I wasn't expecting a 5 star resort feel or anything, we are pretty plain people, but I guess I just expected a little more based on the awesome reviews.)

Overall, it was just average. There was nothing really wrong with it that made the experience terrible. We still had a good time. But it was just not as nice as we expected.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. As the owner of the cottage, we care deeply about our guests comments, cares and concerns. My husband and I have been renting this cottage for 5 seasons now, we work and live on the island and work really hard cleaning the cottage and trying our best to provide all the reasonable comforts for our guests. We also keep the price of the rental economical. In our rental instructions, we ask all guests to let us know if something is damaged or not working properly and always respond in a timely manner to address these concerns. I had no idea that the dead bolt wasn't working as nobody in 5 years has ever mentioned it to us. We have never locked it ourselves becaus we have never had any crime or break ins here...that is the appeal of a small rural island community. I did notice that after you checked out, the toilet paper roll was off the wall and my husband fixed it. Had we known sooner, we would have fixed it sooner. The decor that you speak of is clearly shown in over a dozen photos posted on my listing....I would never try to rent our cottage with the belief that it is more than what it is. With that said, the kitchen has granite countertops, a brand new stove, a very efficient dishwasher and refrigerator. The cottage is only 500 square feet and clearly states that. If we put a full size dishwasher and stove in the kitchen there wouldn't be room for cabinetry. You hit the nail on the head when you said it's the end of the season and the sleeper sofa took the brunt of overuse from families this summer. We will be replacing the sleeper sofa before next season with a new one. If you didn't notice, the queen sized bed was brand new, we painted the entire cottage inside and out at the beginning of the summer and the addition of outdoor dining with umbrella and firepit is a perk for families on a budget. We are not a big rental company taking high rates and lots of fees for all the extras. If we were we might purchase matching Egyptian cotton shower towels and linens....but all of our guests choose us and are extremely happy with the cottage because it's affordable and you get a lot more in this little cottage for the price than you would in any other rental this size on the island. We offer free wifi, basic cable and unlimited phone for added convenience to our guests. Thanks again for your comments and will continue to work hard to ensure a comfortable stay for our renters.

Lovely little vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

This adorable little house was the perfect vacation base for us. It met all the needs of two weary travelers without being fussy. It was very clean, the kitchen was well enough equipped that we only went out to eat a few times, and the washer and dryer were very nice to have for gross hiking clothes. A pleasant surprise was that the house stayed cool on hot days with a few strategically opened windows. The small yard in the back is a lovely spot to hang out after a long day, especially with the fire pit. We ate most of our meals out there. Being able to hop on my bike and get straight to the Loop Road was wonderful. The traffic noise from Route 3 is noticeable but not bothersome, even over Labor Day weekend, quiets down before 9pm, and the landscaping is well placed to provide a surprisingly high level of privacy. Having the small market just down the street and a firewood supply around the corner were very convenient. The owner replied promptly to our questions and was helpful and accommodating. Our only (very minor) complaint is that we found the couch unsupportive and moderately uncomfortable for lounging on. But why would we sit on a couch instead of exploring Acadia?! We were delighted with this house, and would happily go back.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. We work hard to make sure the cottage is comfortable and efficient for all travelers who chose to stay there. We have a passion for living here on this amazing island. My husband is native and we want all who visit and stay at the cottage to leave with the same love and passion for this very special place. I have noticed this year that the couch (being a sleeper sofa) has certainly been used a lot!!!! Its high on our priority list to purchase a brand new sleeper sofa for next season to assure maximum comfort for our guests. Again, thanks for taking the time to review our cottage and we hope you will choose us again for future stay on MDI. Warm Regards, Sheridy Olson

Really nice cottage

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is perfect for two people. It's very clean and has everything you need. Sheridy was very easy to get in touch with (for me, mostly e-mail) and was very helpful. We brought our dogs and did a lot of hiking the week we were here. We had a great time and hope to come back again next year. The only thing I wish that was different was that there was a way to get to the fenced in backyard from the house. We had to go out the front door to get to it, so we had to leash our dogs rather than just letting them out. Overall, I would definitely recommend this cottage :)
